Guinee-Bissau was, net als Angola en Mozambique, een kolonie van Portugal dat als laatste Europese land halsstarrig vasthield aan haar Afrikaanse ‘bezittingen’. Onder leiding van Amilcar Cabral ging in 1963 de Partido Africano da Independência de Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC) over tot de gewapende strijd nadat vreedzaam verzet voor onafhankelijkheid op niets was uitgelopen. Tien jaar later was het grootste deel van Guinee-Bissau in handen van de PAIGC. In dit ooggetuigenverslag van zijn voetreis door die bevrijde gebieden in 1974 laat Roel Coutinho aan de hand van foto’s zien hoe het leven en de gezondheidszorg daar, ondanks de dreiging van bombardementen, doorging. En hoe in dit land, dat een hoge mate van analfabetisme kende, de scholing van kinderen en volwassenen op gang kwam. Jos Damen, bibliothecaris van het Afrika-Studiecentrum Leiden, plaatst in zijn inleiding de geschiedenis van Guinee-Bissau in de context van de jaren zeventig ‘toen alles anders moest’.

Guinea-Bissau, like Angola and Mozambique, was a colony of Portugal that was the last European country to cling stubbornly to its African "possessions". In 1963, under the leadership of Amilcar Cabral, the Partido Africano da Independência de Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC) turned to armed struggle after peaceful resistance to independence failed. Ten years later, most of Guinea-Bissau was in the hands of the PAIGC. In this eyewitness account of his journey on foot through those liberated areas in 1974, Roel Coutinho uses photographs to show how life and health care there continued, despite the threat of bombing. And how in this country, which had a high degree of illiteracy, the education of children and adults got under way. In his introduction, Jos Damen, librarian of the African Studies Center Leiden, places the history of Guinea-Bissau in the context of the 1970s 'when everything had to change'.

Neste relato de testemunha ocular de sua jornada a pé por aquelas áreas liberadas em 1974, Roel Coutinho usa fotografias para mostrar como a vida e os cuidados de saúde continuaram ali, apesar da ameaça de bombardeio. E como neste país, que tinha alto índice de analfabetismo, se iniciou a educação de crianças e adultos. Na sua introdução, Jos Damen, bibliotecário do Centro de Estudos Africanos de Leiden, situa a história da Guiné-Bissau no contexto dos anos 1970 'quando tudo tinha de mudar'.
