Wikipedian in Residence pilot project at the Bombay Natural History Society
Early this month, I completed a small pilot project at the Bombay Natural History Society located in Mumbai, India. Founded in 1883, the BNHS houses a treasure trove of specimens and research material on a wildlife, biodiversity, and conservation in India. After the BNHS evaluates the project, I hope that it would open its doors to the Wikimedia community for Wikipedian in Residence programmes and community activities.
As a part of the project, the English Wikipedia article on the late Humayun Abdulali, a naturalist of repute and a late functionary of the Society, was expanded using journals, magazines, and other reference material available online and at the BNHS. I found that very few reliable secondary references on the topic were available online, owing to which most citations were sourced from the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society and a semi-autobiographical book on Humayun Abdulali. I also shot and uploaded a few photos of specimens pertaining to the subject to the Wikimedia Commons. I was helped and supported by Wikimedians Shyamal, Ashwin Baindur, and Vickram Crishna in this project.
