Wikipedia Education Program/Arabic language countries/Communication Translator

This is a preliminary role description for the "Communication Translator, Cairo Education Pilot." This is a volunteer (unpaid) role.

The Communication Translator is a crucial volunteer element of the Cairo Education Pilot. This person is responsible for professionally and efficiently translating on-wiki and off-wiki messages both to and from Arabic, to facilitate communication between non-Arabic-speaking members of the Wikipedia Education Program and Arabic-speaking participants of the program.

Responsibilities & Commitment edit

  • Translate e-mail messages, on-wiki posts, and other forms of communication from English to Arabic; on average, 1–2 messages/posts per week will need translation. The expected turnaround time for each translation is no more than 48 hours, and ideally within 24 hours.
  • As the need arises: translate messages and on-wiki content from Arabic to English for the understanding of the Wikipedia Education Program team.
  • As the need arises: send e-mails and post on-wiki messages in Arabic on behalf of the Wikipedia Education Program, with approval from the Global Education Program Manager.

Requirements/Qualifications edit

  • Excellent, professional writing skills in Arabic.
  • Solid reading skills in English; comprehensible writing skills in English.
  • Extensive experiencing communicating on the Arabic Wikipedia.
