Education Program Planning and Evaluation Workshop
Overview: This workshop prepares program leaders to be able to plan and evaluate education programs with clear outputs, outcomes, and high level impact. It will be a hands on workshop with active participation. We will go through a problem analysis activity that will lead us into outlining our outputs, outcomes, and a vision statement for our project.
Time needed: Minimum 2 hours
At the end of this workshop participants will know:
- Why we need to plan strategically for impact in Wikipedia Education Programs
- Why we need to communicate our impact to the wider Wikimedia community
At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Complete a problem tree analysis for any project
- Complete an objective tree analysis for any project

Whiteboard or large pieces of paper
Small note cards or small pieces of paper

Problem Tree Analysis
Ice breaker | Warm up/ice breaker of your choice | 5 minutes | ||
Problem brainstorm activity |

Sharing | Share the problems out loud as a group, see if any are mentioned more than once or can be linked together. Then distribute the cards again to pairs or groups. | 10 minutes | ||
Root causes activity | In pairs or groups (or even individually or as a large group, depending on # of participants and preferences of the group) on the back of each card, brainstorm the root causes of the problem(s) that have been assigned to your group. [1] | 20 minutes | ||
Effects activity | Change cards with the other group (adjust this based on how you organized the previous activity). The group should read the root causes on the back of their new cards and on the front of the cards brainstorm and write down what they think are the effects of these problems. Not only low level effects, but also societal level effects.[2] | 20 minutes | ||
Draw your problem tree | Use the cards to create a “problem tree” (see example). This activity can be adjusted to accommodate timing, space and available resources. | 20 minutes |
