It is our quest to ensure sustainability in knowledge gathering and sharing through education and learning, where Wikipedia belongs. Our team will embark on a project named the Open Education Community Program (OECP). This project seeks to extend the reach of Wikipedia and selected sister projects through education and research. Its our hope to bridge the Wikipedia awareness gap as uncovered through a research by the New Readers Team at the WMF. This will lead to the creation of Ghanaian Content on English Wikipedia and non-english Wikipedia (such as Ga, Ewe and Twi) as well as other sister projects such as (Wikidata, WIkimedia Commons, Wikiversity, etc.) The following projects the pillars of the campaign:
- Rural Wikipedia Education Program
- Translate- a-thon and article creation on non-english Wikipedia’s
- Technology and Green Mentorship Program
The team is looking at scaling this project for a 10 month period where the phases below will have its metrics met with the required impact each quarter.
Project Phase Description
edit1. Rural Wikipedia Education Program
This phase looks at possibilities to expand Wiki projects by reaching out to institutions in the rural communities who will adopt the Wikipedia Education Program. The objective is for all to be involved in contributing to the sum of all knowledge and none left behind. In Ghana there are some groups and communities bridging the knowledge gap in several ways. We wish to use this program to have a joint rural program where groups will be tasked on having this program implemented with the partnerships created. This will reduce the burden of cost of internet, accessibility to few communities engaged, encourage diverse training and shared responsibility in making impact.
2.Translate- a-thon and article creation on non-english Wikipedia’s
The second phase of this project seeks to address the gaps with our local languages representation on Wikipedia. We realised that there is a dire need to protect and preserve our local languages and the best store is to have them represented online through wikipedia in order to meet the needs of people who can read in other languages other than English. There will be trainings with Lecturers, teachers and professionals in the field of languages to help push this agenda. Students in the various institutions will have this as class assignments and will be scored a part of their language program and a translate-a-thon competition will be launched to crown the top three 93) highest contributors.
The goal is to translate 500 articles of the English Wikipedia to Ewe, Ga and Twi. This will be achieved by training language lecturers, students and teachers on how to not only contribute to wikipedia through diverse projects but have a broader scope in being advocates to teach members from similar groups. This will in turn expand the reach of outreach programs to educationist and translators.
3.Technology and Green Mentorship Program
The final phase of the project is a mentorship programme that is focused on using wikimedia tools for community based development through online education. It is targeted at students in the Central Region of Ghana towards using wikimedia tools to manage, acquire and share knowledge and findings for creating a high-tech community garden and community green planting project. The training will involve a computational thinking class for developing Do It Yourself (DIY) garden hacks to automate farm processes such as irrigation, temperature control, harvesting, storage,etc. The objective of the project is for students to learn circular economy concepts through edit-a-thons/ trainings to write around food storage, food processing, reuse of farm by-products and recycling in the region.
The class will be made up of 65% females and 35% males. Embarking in this program with a leadership training component will enlighten the females and males the need to appreciate invest.
In order for this project to be sustainable, a community based club is going to be formed comprising a minimum of two high schools. Club activities will focus on both learning and on-field engagement to enhance online knowledge feed on Wikipedia. The project seeks to award (4) exceptional students who exhibit ambassadorial potential and can create a susbtantial information .
The project will use the following Wikimedia sister projects:
- Wikiversity: The project team will create a course on building local innovations.
- Wikicommons:The team along with the students will contribute pictures, videos about a chosen topic or town onto wikicommons.
- Mediawiki: The team will create a local platform for documenting the project.
- Wikidata:Students will add querey's to items around the circular economy which has not been represented yet.
Since the project is located in the rural area, the team will use Kiwix as the main source of training modules and knowledge bank throughout the project whilst Meta wiki will be used for setting up an organizational structure.
Objectives & Metrics

- Extending the WEP to the rural communities.
- Promote cross collaboration amongst the Open Movement in Ghana.
- Recruit ambassador of Wikipedia and other sister projects to represent the affiliate in various regions where we are not yet there.
- Improve contents on Wikimedia projects.
- Extend educative opportunities and ensure inclusion of teachers, lecturers and linguists.
Metrics:
- Translate at least 500 articles from English into various Ghanaian languages
- Train about 50 new editors each from at least 5 regions in Ghana.
- Mentor over 1000 students across the country.
- 20 schools to be introduced to the Wikipedia Education Program
- 10 schools to accept the Wikipedia Education Program
- 2000 students to be trained
- 3000 articles to be translated into other languages by all language institutions listed
- Presentations and trainings in senior and junior high schools
- Edit-a-thon sessions each month
- At least 50 Audios and videos of indigenous languages being recorded and uploaded on wikimedia commons

- We will use a dashboard and onsite visitation to monitor progress.
- Surveys will be conducted by teachers to measure their results in the respective schools.
- Interviews with participants and lectures with a detailed report.
- Exceeding targeted metrics and ensuring a sustainable program which will be run on a yearly basis by all trained educationist, language institutions and newbies.

We believe that education and educating never ends. Wikimedia projects are geared towards having different cultures and background either to contribute or to acquire relevant knowledge for implementation and growth.
Why do you want to join the W&E Greenhouse?
editShare your main reasons for applying, motivation, expectations, and what you would like to achieve by the end of this experience.
In Ghana, for a matter of fact through our years of trainings, projects led and hubs established, we have realised that it is quite difficult to introduce people to all the projects Wikimedia run so if these projects have education as a focal point, it’s easier to implement them especially in schools.
Also, this is an opportunity to get exposed through these online courses to be deeply educated and have a professional backing and experience when implementing our projects with lecturers, educators, educational institutions, resourceful organisations and the community in general.
