“Olympic sports through history” on Serbian Wikipedia

Summary: “Olympic sports through history” is a project of the representatives of the Faculty of Sport at Union-Nikola Tesla University in Belgrade, who got a grant from Wikimedia Serbia for its realization. Wikimedia Serbia has recognized the importance of the projects of this kind and has approved a grant for activities that will last until the end of 2019.

“Olympic sports through history” is a project of the representatives of the Faculty of Sport at Union-Nikola Tesla University in Belgrade, who got a grant from Wikimedia Serbia for its realization. Wikimedia Serbia has recognized the importance of the projects of this kind and has approved a grant for activities that will last until the end of 2019. It is especially important to mention that the project representatives are already our partners within the Education Program, which indicates their motivation and interest to engage further in our projects in addition to regular activities.

By creating and publishing articles, we will make content that is significant to Olympic sports, culture and society as a whole. All articles created during the course of this project in the future may be edited with the new content related to the Olympic success of Serbian athletes.

Sport as a very significant social phenomenon offers many opportunities for creating various content that could be presented on Wikipedia, and this project could itself be just one in a series of similar sports-related projects that could be realized in the coming period. The project would be fully viable as all new information would be edited and verified by students within the course at the Faculty and thus would allow continuous updating of the data. Through the cooperation of Wikipedia Serbia and the Faculty of Sport, this project has provided long-term coverage in the field of sports on Serbian Wikipedia.

Within its curriculum, the Faculty of Sport has a course in the History of Sport and Olympism, which provides a good starting point for students to be involved in this project. In the English language course, students practice sports terminology in English and Serbian through practical examples from sports disciplines, which is very helpful in describing the rules of Olympic disciplines. The students used available literature that can be find in the Faculty Library, in the personal collections of project participants, and on the Internet.
