Catur in a teachers' training workshop

This month's nomination comes from the Education Team of Wikimedia Indonesia, who introduces us to Catur Nurrochman Oktavian:

Catur Nurrochman Oktavian, M.Pd. is a teacher who has served as Head of Research and Community Service Department of the National Board of Teachers Association of the Republic of Indonesia (PGRI) since 2019 and Chairman of the Writers Teacher Association of Teachers Association of the Republic of Indonesia for Bogor Regency Branch since 2017.

In 1998, he began his teaching activity in a private school in Mangkajang, Berau Regency, East Kalimantan. He graduated with a Master's degree from the Indonesia University of Education in 2015. In the same year, he founded the Writing and Reading Community (KAGUM) in Bogor. In 2018, he took office as Secretary of the Writers Teacher Association of National Board of Teachers Association of the Republic of Indonesia (PB PGRI).

In early 2019, Catur started to get acquainted with Wikimedia Indonesia. He masterminded the partnership between Wikimedia Indonesia and the National Board Teachers Association of the Republic of Indonesia. As a result of this partnership, Wikimedia Indonesia was able to organize Wikipedia Training of Trainers for teachers with the National Board of Teachers Association of the Republic of Indonesia. Catur participated in the training as well and he was one of the two participants who managed to pass the training. After he passed the training, he became an active Wikipedian as well as Wikimedian. He initiated and also gotten involved in Wikipedia Training for teachers in Jakarta, West Java, East Java, Lampung, West Kalimantan, Southeast Sulawesi, and Central Sulawesi.

Catur with his enthusiasm kept encouraging his fellow teachers to contribute to Wikipedia. Hundreds of teachers already participated in Wikipedia Training for the teacher with Catur as the facilitator. Many new articles were written by the teachers who participated in those training. These training programs for teachers enabled Wikimedia Indonesia to introduce Wikipedia to the teachers, starting from how Wikipedia works, how to contribute, and how to benefit from Wikipedia in organizing teaching-learning activities. Not only that, but all of these teachers were also motivated to share their knowledge by contributing to Wikipedia.

Catur's attempt to get his fellow teachers to contribute to Wikipedia has opened a new opportunity for Wikipedia to be more known by teachers, or educators in general, in Indonesia. Not only that, but hopefully the teachers' involvement in Wikipedia will increase the quality and the quantity of the articles in Wikipedia, thus broaden Wikipedia's possibility to serve as a tool in teaching-learning activities, and to be beneficial for people who work in the education field, especially in Indonesia.
