In April 2017, I attended The International Conference on Education 2017, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Conference witnessed the participation around 100 participants representing more than 30 countries across the world. The countries include: Australia Bahrain, Brunei China, Columbia, Egypt, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Kuwait, New Zealand, USA, Turkey, Thailand, Singapore, South Africa. In this conference, I delivered a presentation about using Wikipedia as the teaching tools in higher education, and about 30 people attended my session.

In my presentation, I pointed out the possibility of using Wikipedia as the teaching tools for tertiary education, by studying the Wikipedia Education Program operated in Israel, Sweden, and the United States. The Wikipedia Education Program in fact shows the relationship between education and technology. At the same time, I discussed the role of Wikipedia in the academic setting in my presentation. In the mentioned countries, some institutions used Wikipedia as the teaching tools. In four years, more than 10,000 students, many of whom were women, have participated in the Wikipedia Education Program, adding 12 million words, the equivalent of 45,000 printed pages, to more than 10,000 Wikipedia articles in multiple languages.

At the end of the session, there was a Q&A session, and some participants told me that they are interested in the Wikipedia Education Program, and would like to know more about it. I explained the whole program to each of them individually and showed them how they can apply the program in their teaching. They told me that they will think about the possibility to run the program in their school.

The theme of the conference was “Models of Global Education and Education Mobility for the 2020’s" and I think it is very related to our Movement strategy. I went to different sessions in the conference and the presenters delivered the presentations about education in their countries. Countries in Asia now are trying to use more technology in classrooms and I can see the potential of having Wikipedia Education Program there.
