Nederlands: In dit verhaal laat ik zien welke kansen Wikipedia biedt om samen met bewoners, bibliotheken, instellingen en andere communities het culturele en historische erfgoed in de stad breder zichtbaar en herbruikbaar te maken.

Wikipedia is niet alleen de vrije encyclopedie die door meer dan 70% van de Nederlanders wekelijks gebruikt wordt, maar tegelijkertijd een community van vrijwillige schrijvers, fotografen, software-ontwikkelaars, docenten en projectleiders - allen exponenten van de participatiesamenleving en actief burgerschap - die samen dit grootste referentienetwerk ter wereld mogelijk maken.

Cultuur, kunst en erfgoed beslaat een substantieel deel van Wikipedia. Binnen dit deelgebied werkt de Wiki-vrijwilligersgemeenschap nauw samen met culturele instellingen in de stad, zoals openbare bibliotheken, archieven en musea, die steeds vaker hun kennis, data en collecties voor alle inwoners, kunstenaars, bedrijven en instellingen gratis en rechtenvrij via Wikipedia beschikbaar maken.

Via burgerparticipatieprojecten zoals Wiki Loves Monuments komt ook steeds meer culturele content uit de stad vrij en open beschikbaar.

Ik illustreer bovenstaande ontwikkelingen aan de hand van praktijkvoorbeelden die de Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Wikipedia en enkele openbare bibliotheken de afgelopen jaren hebben opgezet.

English: In this story I show which opportunities Wikipedia can offer to make the cultural and historic heritage in a city more visible and reusable by collaborating with citizens, libraries, institutions and other communities.

Wikipedia is not only the free encyclopedia used weekly by over 70% of the Dutch population, but also a community of volunteers, writers, photographers, software developers, teachers, project leaders and other active citizens. Culture, art and heritage comprise a substantial part of Wikipedia.

Within this sector the Wiki volunteer community closely collaborates with cultural institutions in the city, including public libraries, archives and museums. These parties increasingly make their knowledge, data and collections freely and openly accessible, sharable and reusable for citizens, artists, companies and institutions via Wikipedia. Reversely, via citizen participation projects like Wiki Loves Monuments more city-based, open and free cultural content becomes available for all. Olaf illustrates these developments by discussing practical projects the National Library, Wikipedia and a number of public libraries have set up over the last few years.
