The story of the contribution of women in the Northern Territory is still largely invisible on Wikipedia. On Sunday 15 April, Alice Springs locals got together to do something about it. As part of the 2018 NT Heritage Festival, the HerStory: Women on Wikipedia Edit-a-thon organised by Caddie Brain of Wikiclub NT drew ten people with little or no previous editing experience worked together to increase the stories and information about local women on Wikipedia. The workshop was supported by National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame who provided access to their Her Story database and archives, hosting the workshop in a courtyard steeped in history, on the grounds of the old Alice Springs Prison. The group created six new pages about pioneering women, including a legendary aviatrix who made a largely-forgotten record-breaking flight from Perth to Sydney in the 1930s to a missionary and nurse who worked to improve Aboriginal health outcomes in Central Australia for more than 40 years.

Three Australian Wikipedia editors presented a webinar to the Australasian Open Access Strategy Group on Tuesday 17 April about how Wikipedia and Open Access go hand in hand. Presentation audio and slides are available.

GLAM Peak Newcastle

On 9 - 10 April 2018 Whiteghost.ink represented Wikimedia Australia at the GLAM Peak Digital Access to Collections Workshop in Newcastle, New South Wales, where a group of 20 small GLAM organisations from regional New South Wales were working to understand the implications of digitisation for their organisations' practices and policies. It was one of many workshops delivered around the state designed to assist GLAM professionals who are responsible for implementing changes demanded by digitisation, but without the resources available to the big organisations. The workshop was a well-organised and relevant event for the GLAM staff attending. Everything from the technical aspects of digitising, to cultural sensitivities, preservation methods, and funding opportunities was on the agenda. Wikimedia Australia was invited as one of several "Technology Partners". As a member of the broader Wikimedia community with a relatively long-term engagement in global and Australian GLAM as well, Wikimedia Australia's experience is relevant to almost all aspects of this GLAM Peak training initiative, especially to working with volunteers, and of course, the mysteries of metadata and copyright.


Everybody WIKI

Iedereen WIKI (Dutch for Everybody WIKI) is a project of the local library of Ternat supported by Wikimedia Belgium. The project's aim is to digitally unlock local knowledge by making digital data accessible for everyone and to stimulate skills. During the project local heritage organisations and other interested people get an introduction and help in editing Wikipedia, also, students edit Wikipedia and upload photos about a local topic.

The project is a pilot project funded by the province of Flemish-Brabant and has two phases: phase one in Spring 2018 and phase two in Autumn 2018. In the second phase the project is enlarged to neighbouring libraries.

During April three activities were organised:

  • 21 April 2018 - Multimedia walk in which participants take photographs in Ternat
  • 22 April 2018 - Edit-a-thon Iedereen wiki in library Ternat
  • 26 April 2018 - Wikipedia session with school class in Ternat in which a school class writes a Wikipedia article about the castle of Ternat


Labs to introduce Wikidata and its potentialities in Brazil

From April 2017 to March 2018, I worked as a Wikipedian-in-Residence at RIDC Neuromat, in São Paulo, Brazil. During a part of this period, I had the opportunity to help in the organization and promotion of thematic edit-a-thons concentrated on mathematics and neuroscience. From October 2017 to March 2018, I could also take part in labs held at the same research center in which users were tutored on how to explore the potentialities of Wikidata, aiming to "share resources and capacities for the integration of Wikidata with other Wikimedia projects, specially Wikipedia".

Situated inside the University of São Paulo, the Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center for Neuromathematics was founded in 2013 and, since July 2014, it has put among its objectives the propagation of scientific knowledge by open educational resources, namely Wikimedia Foundation initiatives. Beside the synthesis of mathematical modelling and theoretical neuroscience, researchers at RIDC NeuroMat have uploaded images to Wikimedia Commons, added spoken articles about mathematics, created and improved pages about neuroscience, statistics and theory of probabilities and, since the last trimester of 2017, investigated Wikidata and its capabilities.

On October 5th, 2017, RIDC NeuroMat hosted its first Wikidata Lab. After a presentation by Éder Porto, editors were invited to practical activities in which they learned how to produce automatic infoboxes from Wikidata through the module WikidataIB to be used in Portuguese Wikipedia. 10 editors created more than 10 articles, edited around 130 pages, having made more than 339 edits.

Wikidata Lab II happened on November 16th, 2017. With an introduction by Mike Peel and his coordination, users were taught how to "prepare automatically lists on Portuguese Wikipedia from Wikidata", using Listeria. 9 articles were created and 139 pages were edited by 9 editors, corresponding to more than 440 edits.

The third edition of this sequence of Wikidata Labs was held on December 7th, 2017. Instructed by Célio Costa Filho, participants learned how to propose and use identifiers in the style of authority control, an action which may allow easier information comparison and data scraping in the future. 6 editors created 3 articles, edited more than 130 pages, having made around 280 edits.

RIDC NeuroMat hosted its fourth Wikidata Lab on February 22nd, 2018. Coordinated again by Éder Porto, editors discovered how to add large volumes of data to Wikidata with QuickStatements. 15 files were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, 193 articles were created and 279 pages were edited by 15 editors.

The fifth edition of this Wikidata Labs series occurred on March 22nd, 2018. The finnish Wikimedian Ari Hayrinen introduced users by videoconference to GLAMpipe, a new tool which allows uploading files and metadata to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata at the same time. 10 editors created more than 60 articles, edited more than 450 pages, having made around 1,260 edits.

All these Wikidata Labs were made possible with the help of the User Group Wikimedia in Brazil. On average, 10 editors were present at each event. These users were responsible for more than 1,750 edits on different Wikimedia projects. More quantitative information about this series may be found in the quoted Programs & Events Dashboard pages of RIDC NeuroMat. In spite of the long journey to be covered, these events show that the integration between Wikidata and its sister projects is not only desirable, but also possible with the effort and unity of those committed to the cause of free knowledge. Furthermore, this integration may contribute to fostering a new culture on how Wikimedians work cross-wikily, integrating easy-to-do connections among projects with the objective of providing high-quality information with efficiency.

As part of the preparation of the Wikiconvention Francophone which will take place in Grenoble, and to deepen the possibilities of collaboration with the cultural institutions of the city, Wikimedia France met the "Musée", the museum and the municipal library. Grenoble has defined an open content/data common policy which draws an opportunity of framework convention with the city to build sustainable partnerships. In this way, we can discuss with them any possible forms of collaboration that are part of our GLAM project.

Art+Feminism edit-a-thons

BALI (Linguistic studies library at Ca' Foscari University in Venice) joined in Art+Feminism 2018 and organized in order to translate and improve pages about women artists of the Sinsombrero, Edo and Arts and Crafts movements.

Smart City Week in Trento

Biblioteca comunale di Trento and Trentino-Alto Adige Wiki user group organized a two-day-event during Smart City Week. On Friday presentation of the Ancient maps digitalization project Geographies of the Early modern period and Georeferencing workshop held by our newly appointed board member Maurizio Napolitano. On Saturday Behind the Scenes event in the codex archive and edit-a-thon about Trentino history.

BEIC reached 20 millions!

Images uploaded by BEIC (Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e Cultura, Milan) reached last month 20 million visualizations on the Wikimedia projects. Since 2014 till now, BEIC uploaded 20.000+ files (mostly frontispieces from ancient books and photos from the Paolo Monti Collection). They are now used on 31.500 pages - nearly 20k articles in more than 200 languages on Wikipedia. See details (in Italian).

AIB Basilicata and Wikimedia meetings

WMI members Luigi Catalani and Claudio Forziati held a series of meetings for the Basilicata chapter of AIB (Italian library association) about "GLAM-wiki: strategies, best practices and opportunities".

Оn 11th of April an exhibition dedicated to the Wikiеxpeditions was opened in order to present and mark the successful work of the project. The exhibition consisted 31 images taken during the Wikiexpeditions held in Macedonia and 3 posters with statistics and numbers of the content and all work done on Wikipedia. Attendees were also informed about the Wikiexpeditions project and its significance as well as the possibilities that Wikimedia projects offer for field research by volunteering and contributing in different ways i.e. taking photographs, writing articles, research through literature and helping in organization of such trips as Wikiexpeditions. The event was also used to announce the fourth season of the Macedonian Wikiexpeditions in this year. The exhibition will last several days in April, and it is planned to be displayed and shown in other cities in Macedonia in the upcoming period.

Workshops with Wiki Clubs members

In April 2018, there were three workshops with the members of the Wiki Clubs in the Republic of Macedonia, two of them are collaboration with GLAM institutions: Military Museum of the Republic of Macedonia, and the City Library "Braka Miladinovci" in Skopje. Seventeen new users were trained altogether, 30 new articles were created and 7 existing articles were improved.

On 2 April 2018, the Chair of GLAM Macedonia, Violetova visited Wiki Club members in their school in Dracevo and held one day workshop with the members. Fifteen new members enrolled in Wiki Club, who were introduced with the basics of editing Wikipedia. To the other members of this Wiki Club, who already create and edit articles on Macedonian Wikipedia, were shown tips and tricks, which will improve their editing skills. During the workshop 7 new articles were created and 1 existing articles was improved.

In collaboration with the Military Museum of the Republic of Macedonia, on 17 April 2018 GLAM Macedonia held one day workshop with the members of Wiki Club Museum of Macedonian struggle in Skopje. A short documentary film about NATO was presented to the participants, and they had opportunity to visit the exhibition in the Military Museum. During the three hours of the editing workshop, eight new articles on Wikipedia were created, all biographies of people who were the General Secretaries of NATO. The selection and contents of the texts were selected by Viki Taseva from the Military Museum in cooperation with the two educators from the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle, Anna Višinova and Daniela Mitevska.

During the weekend of 21st and 22nd April 2018 weekend workshop on topics from the First World War was realized, organized by the Wikipedian in Residence in the City Library "Braka Miladinovci" in Skopje, Gordana Jovic-Stojkovska. Twelve Wikipedians and 8 members of the Wiki Club Staro Nagorichane participated, and two new Wikipedians were trained. During the weekend, 15 new articles were created, and six existing articles were improved.


325,000 images from Dutch photo archives uploaded by Mr.Nostalgic

Over a period of 5 months Dutch Wikipedian User:Mr.Nostalgic uploaded 325,000 photos from the Dutch National Archives to Wikimedia Commons, including 270k photos from the photographic press agency Anefo. There are three reasons why these uploads form an interesting showcase.

  • User:Mr.Nostalgic uploaded the 325k photos on his own initiative, in his spare time, simply using 5 laptops and Pulover’s Macro Creator –on average uploading 2,000 photos a day over a period of five months.
  • Most photographs date from the period 1945-1989 –which is a difficult period to obtain photos from, because of copyright barriers. These photographs have all been released with a CC-zero license, as the National Archives of the Netherlands had obtained the copyright of the collection -and decided to open the collection up. Quality and resolution varies, but is OK in most cases (and in several cases just fantastic).
  • Though most photographs were taken in the Netherlands, these photos cover a broad range of interesting topics from all over the world: many photographs on sports & Olympic Games, a range of politicians (from George Bush via Margaret Thatcher to Robert Mugabe), cultural heritage (monuments, artists and Eurovision Song Contest) and even 24,500 photographs taken during the Dutch-Indonesian war, 1945-1949. Another interesting part of the collection are 5,000 photographs taken by Willem van de Poll in Israel, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan during the period 1948-1950.

Usage

A small part of the collection (ca. 3%) was already used in Commons, but usage rapidly increased during and after the new donation process. Total image usages of the Anefo collection is now 97,000, over 12,500 distinct images. Wikidata even uses 6,797 Anefo images from this collection.

1,1 million Dutch GLAM images in Commons

Earlier donations from Dutch GLAM institutions to Commons were made by the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (486,000 photographs), Naturalis Biodiversity Center (275,000 photos) and some dozen other museums, archives and libraries. This upload of images from the Dutch National Archives –now totaling 350,000 images- is a valuable addition. In total, Dutch GLAMS have donated more than 1,1 million images to Wikimedia Commons.

Work to be done

Thanks to both Dutch Nationaal Archief (for making the images available under CC-zero) and to User:Mr.Nostalgic, for 5 months of work. So this is it? Everything under control? No, there is still a lot of work to be done re this upload. License is OK (all CC-zero). Descriptions are OK, but only in Dutch. And categories are -as always with mass uploads- not complete. The source is categorised (Dutch National Archives, Anefo), as is the photographer (if known). But the most important categorisations (persons, locations, events) still need to be done. 15,000 down, 310,000 to go!



First Wikipedian in Residence in the Philippines

The Bantayog ng mga Bayani ("Monument to Heroes"), a Philippine foundation that maintains a museum and library dedicated to the heroes and victims of the Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship, has hired Red de Leon (User:Alternativity) as its first Wikipedian in Residence. This residency, which will last for three months from April to June 2018, is also the first in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

As a Wikipedian in Residence, Red will be working with a small team to help the digitize portions of Bantayog's library as well as to improve coverage of topics related to the Marcos regime in Wikipedia and its sister projects. He will also serve as a liaison between Bantayog and the Wikimedia community by organizing events and workshops, and plan to help the Filipino Wikimedia community grow by sharing his skills as a Wikipedian to Bantayog’s constituency of museum visitors, library researchers, and supporters. The Wiki Society of the Philippines, formerly known as Wikimedia Philippines, will also be involved in a supporting and advisory capacity especially when the Resident will be organizing events and workshops.

Red, a writer and an amateur historian, has been editing Wikipedia for more than a decade. Prior to his residency, Red had been improving Wikipedia's coverage of pre-colonial history of the Philippines. Red graduated with a bachelor's degree in Development Communication from the University of the Philippines Los Baños and has taught journalism and technical writing during his stint as a professor at his alma mater.

"Museums and Libraries are our last line of defense in a post-truth world," muses Red on his being hired as a Wikipedian in Residence at the Bantayog. "These are places where facts get transformed from abstractions in an individual's mind, and get turned into tangible experiences we can share objectively with other people. People can visit them together and come to an agreement that 'Hey, this really happened. This is not fake news. This was real.'"

Partnerships, GLAMs & Art+feminism

The first quarter of this year was full of activity for Wikimedia Portugal. Important partnerships with a number of Portuguese, Brazilian and Angolan institutions - universities, academic centers, writers associations, museums and libraries were signed and/or took form. The GLAM partnership with the National Library of Portugal started, the leading exhibition of the 2018 season for the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga was documented for Commons and Wikidata, and a series of events took part before, during and after the International Women's Day at 8 March, as part of the Art+Feminism in the Lusophony 2018 campaign.

Memorandum of Understanding and other partnerships

On the 25 January, a Memorandum of Understanding between Wikimedia Portugal, Universidade Aberta de Portugal (Open University), Cátedra Infante Dom Henrique, LE@D – Laboratório de Educação a Distância e eLearning e CLEPUL - Centro de Literaturas e Culturas Lusófonas e Europeias (Universidade de Lisboa). The signature ceremony took place at the noble hall of Palácio Ceia, seat of the Universidade Aberta de Portugal, and was followed by a workshop attended by 25 teachers of that institution.

As part of the Memorandum of Understanding, a partnership was established with the former User Group Wikimedia in Brazil.

On the same period, a GLAM initiative was established with the Museu Militar da Madeira, and we started working with Associação Presença Feminina, a Portuguese association dedicated to the protection and dignity of women, planning joint activities mainly about Women and Africa, as well as planning the build-up of a Wikimedia community in Guiné-Bissau, where APF is currently establishing and developing partnerships. A partnership was also established with the União de Escritores Angolanos, aiming at the consolidation and growth of the Wikimedia community in Angola. Informal collaboration also started with Museu de Alverca.

On 27 February, started the GLAM partnership between Wikimedia Portugal and the National Library of Portugal, with a full-day series of workshops covering Wikimedia projects integration, Wikidata & Commons in the context of a GLAM project, Wikipedia article editing and creation, and potential uses in education.

On the 2nd of March, with a free pass provided by Cátedra Infante Dom Henrique (CIDH), under the recent partnership, I've had the opportunity to photograph the whole exhibition As Ilhas do Ouro Branco, the leading event for the 2018 seazon of the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, and part of the celebrations of the 6th-centenary of the Portuguese finding of Madeira Archipel. Even if the quality of the photos are not professional, this was extremely important for the Região Autónoma da Madeira, since that exhibition, which is crucial to the study of the archipel's history, art and early economy, will not be presented there. The contents are planned to be fully uploaded on Wikidata and Commons by May 2018.

This year, we partnered with the User Group Wikimedia in Brazil for a common celebration of the International Women's Day throughout the Lusophony world. Our Angolan brothers were not able to join us this year, but plans are being made for a steady collaboration, so that next year they'll be on board. In Portugal we started celebrating already in January, with a series of events, workshops and edit-a-thons that went on till 11 March in Lisbon and Funchal.

In the Região Autónoma da Madeira Art+Feminism was organized in a partnership with CLEPUL-Madeira and the CIDH. This was the first public Wikimedia event in the region, and we were covered by the state radio and TV channels, Antena 1 and RTP, featuring regional cultural magazines. We were joined at the marathons by Funchal's town councilor Madalena Nunes, vice-deon of Universidade da Madeira Elsa Fernandes, radialist Lília Mata, and a number of other well known local personalities, and together we managed to produce about 40 biographies of notable women from Madeira who were still absent from Wikipedia. We joined Funchal's city council cycle of events "Olhar (N)O Feminino", with the presentation/ workshop "Uma Homenagem às Mulheres nas Artes" at Museu Henrique e Francisco Franco, in Funchal, were Wikipedia content was improved and photos of notable artists present there were taken to be uploaded in Commons.

Those Art+Feminism events were a great success, and opened way for new partnerships and collaborations with a number of persons and institutions.

In April, still working on the Gender Gap issues, Wikimedia Portugal partnered again with the User Group Wikimedia in Brazil, for the joint organization of the contest The Women You Have Never Met 2018. A Barnstar Ribbon honouring late Wikipedian Luiza Teles, one of the founders of the Wikipedia in Portuguese, beloved member of our community, deceased in 2016, was produced to be awarded to the winners of the contest.

Serbian Wikipedians in residence at WikiLive 2018 conference

Ministry of culture and information of Republic of Serbia approved project submission by Wikimedia Serbia, for organizing and realizing the three Wikipedian in residence programs in 2018. Department for digitization of the Ministry of culture has recognized WIR project, and GLAM in general, as a project with a big potential for digitizing Serbian cultural heritage. The Ministry will finance complete program with approximately 4200 euros, and each of the three Wikipedians in residence will spend two months in cultural institution - digitizing, writing articles, and educating employees about Wikipedia, GLAM and Wikimedia movement in general. Therefore, Wikimedia Serbia has opened a public call for Wikipedians who would like to work with cultural institutions, and established a selection commission to pick the best from more than 200 candidates who applied for this job. Besides this, Wikimedia Serbia will realize three more WIR projects, as it is planned for the 2018. This will provide more good results for the mission of free knowledge, but essentially will build strong connections with partners in museums, archives and libraries in Serbia.

Ministry of culture and information, Museum of Vojvodina and Wikimedia Serbia has organized a two-day seminar for the museums, galleries and other cultural institutions in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. The seminar was a result of initial workshops held in Ministry of culture last year, when Museum of Vojvodina has shown a great interest of joining the GLAM program in Serbia.

The first day of the seminar gathered the managing directors of the 21 cultural institution, welcomed by general manager of Museum of Vojvodina Mr. Drago Njegovan and deputy ministry of culture Mr. Dejan Masliković. Masliković praised Wikimedia’s mission in GLAM and called institutions to proactively work on expanding visibility of national heritage. Wikimedia Serbia’s team presented Wikimedia movement, Wikipedia, GLAM program and free licence. All of them have shown an amazing interest to be part of GLAM, through releasing materials, Wikipedian in residence program, or implementing QRpedia’s codes on exhibitions in museums or city monuments. On the second day even more cultural employees came to learn how to edit Wikipedia, so nearly 30 people attended the workshop and successfully learned basic steps on editing Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Many of them had plenty ideas to work with GLAM, so we are expecting new partnerships and a lot of knowledge in the coming period.



National museum of world Culture; Sounds and pronunciations; Nordic Museum

National museum of world Culture

The collaboration between the National Museum of World Culture and Wikimedia Sverige included some more workshops for the staff, some clean up of previous uploads and some preparations for future uploads. We have also planned two public edit-a-thons, with the themes Africa and female travelers. Feel free to add resources, inspiration or other great stuff to the pages, or help out with content in your languages before or during the edit-a-thons.

As a satellite part of the Sounds of Changes project the Museum of Work and Council of Working life Museums set up a recording station at the museum during a weekend to have visitors record the pronunciation of the cities, municipalities and villages from their area. Almost 200 soundfiles, in both Swedish, Bosnian, Farsi, Spanish and some other languages were uploaded to Commons, and some have already made their way to Wikidata and articles.

Nordic Museum

Together with User:Vesihiisi, the Nordic Museum has continued development of a script for uploading images from Digitalt Museum to Wikimedia Commons. In April, the script was adapted to handle historical photographs as well as object photos. A batch upload with approximately 140 photos of 1950's fashion was completed to test the script.

National Library of Wales, Oxford University and The National Archives

Projects

It's been a while since I have posted an update here, but rest assured we have been very busy at the National Library of Wales. We have now completed our Welsh Government funded 'Wici-Iechyd' (Wiki-Health) project, which saw the creation of over 4500 new health related articles on the Welsh language Wikipedia. This was acheived by holding edit-a-thons and translate-a-thons, securing open licensing of existing content and semi automating the creation of articles using open data and translations of open text.

Our next big project will involve releasing nearly 5000 historical Welsh portraits to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. We will then run an engagement project using the new Europeana Impact Playbook in order to better measure the wider impacts of this kind of Wikimedia engagement work.

Celtic Knot Conference

We are going to be hosting the Celtic Knot Wikipedia language conference in Wales this July, following the success of the first Celtic Knot held by Ewan McAndrew at the University of Edinburgh last year. The conference will focus on the issues and needs of smaller and minority language Wikipedias and we will have speakers from all over the UK, Ireland, Spain, Norway, Germany, Brittany, The Basque Country and more! University of Oxford

Martin Poulter's placement in the University has been extended. His focus is on building proof-of-concept applications to demonstrate how Wikidata can assist search and discovery for the university's museums, libraries and gardens. He has imported data about three thousand paintings and sculptures from the Jameel Collection of Eastern Art in the Ashmolean Museum. The first proof-of-concept gives multiple views of this data set, and combines it with other databases, Wikipedia extracts and Commons images. The development is ongoing and we are interested in feedback.

Work has also started on the second proof-of-concept which is about the botanical drawings of Ferdinand Bauer: this is a chance to combine data about artworks and data about species, possibly also with geographical data about the places in the Mediterranean where the species were discovered. Wikidata is an ideal platform to combine these different types of data. Martin is also using presentations and workshops to raise awareness of Wikidata and its usefulness for GLAMs and researchers.

The National Archives

The National Archives ran its first editathon, on the theme of Dissidents, Suffragists and Freedom Fighters. A dozen participants created or edited a dozen new articles using sources from the National Archives' library collections and also making use of National Archives material uploaded to Commons in previous projects.

In separate work, more than 70% of the National Archives' ARCHON directory of UK and world archives has now been matched to entities within Wikidata.

Wikipedians in Residence and Travel

Have you negotiated a Wikipedian in Residence position?

In addition to documenting, and sharing the stories of Wikimedia communities around the world, the GLAM team is also providing support for core tactics used by Wikimedia community. Thus far, the GLAM team has developed supporting materials for two of the three most common tactics used for GLAM-Wiki collaborations: edit-a-thons (through developing a Wikipedia edit-a-thon training and teaching materials for Wikidata trainings) and batch uploads to commons (ongoing work as part of Structured Data on Commons, including Workflow mapping and research to identify needs of GLAM participants). The next major tactic to build support materials for is Wikipedian in Residence positions.

Wikipedian in Residence positions vary greatly, in terms of the amount of capacity, resources, time, and activities that both the resident and institutional partners leverage. Moreover, there are an increasing body of different roles beyond WIR positions (such as Wikipedia Visiting Scholars, Wikipedia Interns, or other staff roles). Though we don’t think we can adequately synthesize the best practice for doing residencies, because of the wide variety of circumstances involved in those positions, we do think we can create guidance on the process for establishing WIR positions.

To this end: if you have negotiated a Wikipedian in Residence or similar extended position within a GLAM institution in the last 2 years, Alex would like to talk about to you about experience. In a short 30-60 minute conversation, Alex would like to learn what worked, what didn’t, and what kinds of questions you had when creating those roles. We are looking to interview an additional 5 people about this process. If you are interested, please email him at astinson@wikimedia.org.

If you have thoughts about WIR positions, and aren’t ready to do an interview: that’s okay, there will be a brief followup survey, focus on filling in gaps, resources, and recommendations for creating residency roles.

Wikimedia Conference

The WMF GLAM team participated in the Wikimedia Conference and the preceding Learning Days, with several conversations, workshops and presentations, with a focus on:

  • communicating the typical workflows for uploads to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata in a dedicated workshop during Learning Days.
  • During a two-hour workshop, more than 50 participants gathered and brainstormed about potential GLAM pilot projects for Structured Data on Commons. Sandra and the GLAM team will follow up on this in the upcoming months.   • We also participated in several workshops and sessions on partnerships, and supporting technical contributors.

Learning about Creative Commons and LD4 communities

In addition to Wikimedia Conference, Alex attended both Creative Commons Global Summit and a meeting of the Mellon- funded “Linked Data for Libraries” working group (also known as LD4 or LD4L). Both meetings proved to be very insightful into the broader opportunities of our work:

  • At the Creative Commons meeting, there was broad conversation about many of the challenges and opportunities that the Wikimedia community faces: including how do we address the lack of diversity in Global movements. In particular, both the keynotes and various well attended sessions as part of the main conference focused on how to work well with the cultural and social needs of marginalized groups. As for GLAM conversations, there were plenty of conversations about the intersection of the work that the GLAM-Wiki community does with the larger community working on Open practices in GLAMs. Look for more on both of these fronts soon.
  • At the LD4 meeting, participants were from (mostly) North American research institutions and European National Libraries. The meeting energetically discussed the technical practicalities of integrating Linked Open Data into Library systems. Included in the discussion were number of different tools and platforms, but the presence of Wikidata was widespread throughout the meeting both in the deliberate invitation of Dan Scott, Stacey Allison-Cassin, Anna St. Onge and Alex Stinson, but also in projects previously undiscussed in the Wikimedia community.

Both conferences were very effective in terms of creating contacts and opportunities for working on GLAM support throughout the world. Further communications coming from each of the conversations coming soon.
