Archeological Items in Museum of Kosovo

Historic of Museum

Kosovo Museum - is the National Museum of Kosovo, located in the city of Prishtina. It was founded in 1949 and is the largest museum in Kosovo. However, the building of the museum was constructed in 1889 and it was designed according to the Austro-Hungarian style of construction and its real aim was establishing the high military command of that time.

The Museum is the earliest institution of cultural heritage in Kosovo, established with the goal of preserving, restoration-conservation and presentation of movable heritage on the territory. It is situated in a special facility, from an architectural point of view but also because of its location since it is situated at the old nucleus of the city centre.

Collaboration with Hovhannes Toumanian museum; Art+Feminism+GLAM

This month, on April 13-14, Wikimedia Armenia hosted an editathon at WMAM office. The editathon was again dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Armenian poet Hovhannes Toumanian. Three members from the Alaverdi, Goris, Koghb, Vardenik and Spitak Wikiclubs participated in the ediatathon. During the event, participants edited articles about the works of Hovhannes Toumanian. They also proofread works of Toumanian on Wikisource.

Unlike the previous event, this time the participants created articles using the data and info provided in Tumanyan's academic edition. The necessary materials were acquired within the framework of GLAM cooperation between Wikipedia and Armenia's Hovhannes Tumanyan Museum. 14 articles were created and 150 pages were proofread during the event. Wikimedia Armenia volunteers took photos of Toumanian's personal items, artifacts from his collections during a visit to the museum.

Art+Feminism+GLAM

In the scope of Art+Feminism collaboration the Armenian Wikimedians continued to work on the topics related to women. Meanwhile we organized GLAM+Wikidata edit-a-thon in Mrgavan Wikiclub. At the begining of the edit-a-thon the wikimedians got some introduction knowleade about Wikidata after which using the data base of the National Gallery of Armenia they created Wikidata items related to the artworks in the Gallery depicting Women.

Artists to Wikicommons

Armenian photographer Vahan Kochar is a constant contributer of wikicommons. He joined our Art+Feminism campaign and enriched wikipedia articles with portraits of Armenian women artists from the collection of Andranik and Vahan Kochar.

During Art+Feminism collaboration Armenian sculptor Սամվել Պետրոսյան (քանդակագործ) brought into wikicommons some of his sculptures depicting woman.

Research activity and GLAM-Wiki initiatives

The Wiki Movimento Brasil has been active in research activities related to GLAMs and Wikimedia projects. A research paper was published and another was submitted and is under review in the context of outreach activities with cultural institutions and technological development. The paper The potential of structured narratives for Computational Journalism: journalistic skills in the elaboration of database generated texts investigates in a peer-reviewed journal on Digital Humanities the use of Wikidata-generated narratives to improve content on Wikipedia. This has been used for producing structured drafts for content on GLAMs as well as other topics. A paper comparing digital strategies of Brazilian GLAM-Wiki initiatives and Google Arts Projects has been submitted to a peer-reviewed journal on Collection Management.

The Wiki Movimento Brasil has supported the academic event "Information curation and web semantics" in São Paulo, which brought together different teams from Brazilian universities working with GLAMs. The event was organized in two days: on the first day, teams presented their goals, achievements and challenges --three members of the user group presented among other contributors to free knowledge; on the second day, ideas to collaborate and proposals to integrate processes were discussed. A research and technical agenda was discussed to integrate Wikidata and Commons content feeding with a Wordpress plug-in developed in Brazil for managing and displaying cultural collections, called Tainacan. Edit-a-thon with 15 librarians and ICT professionals

From 26 to 27 April 2019, the local Glam-Wiki team organized a training workshop with librarians, archivists and computer scientists in the city of Bouaké (a city located in the center of Côte d'Ivoire). The workshop took place in several phases during the two days. On Friday the 26th, activities started with a presentation of Wikipedia, Wikimedia and the Glam-Wiki project. Followed by a series of questions and answers. Around noon, participants created Wikipedia accounts and made their first contributions. The Edit-a-thon continued on Saturday 27, and participants focused on improving articles related to Côte d'Ivoire.

Setting up a Wiki Club in Bouaké

At the end of the last day of training, certificates of participation were given to each participant. In the end, some participants wanted to continue the adventure and integrate the user group of Wikimedia CIV. This allowed us to create a Wiki Club (working group designed to create and improve articles on Côte d'Ivoire in particular and Africa in general) in Bouaké.

Nancy Museums organized their first Wikimedia events during a two-day edit-a-thon in the Museum of Fine Arts of Nancy. During this event, art students, political science students, and employees from Nancy Museums learned how to edit Wikipedia, Commons, and Wikidata. Pictures from their collections were also uploaded.

Indonesian Wikisource meetup in Jakarta

On April 24, 2019, Wikimedia Indonesia conducted an informal Wikisource meetup in Jakarta. This event was held to gain some helps from Wikisource editors to transcribe some pages of Majalah Aboean Goeroe-Goeroe that was digitized by Wikimedia Indonesia in 2018 from Minangkabau Culture Documentation and Information Center in Padangpanjang City, West Sumatra.

For 3 hours, the contributors successfully proofread more than 20 pages of several editions of the magazine. More than 10 pages had been validated. All contributions were recorded at wscontest/c/13.

This meetup is one of Wikimedia Indonesia's efforts to introduce Wikisource, a Wikipedia sister project, to Indonesian Wikimedian community. All events related to Wikisource, such as Wikisource trainings or meetups, are organized under GLAM 2018 subproject.

Translation of Ki Hadjar Dewantara's letters

Thanks to Meursault2004, this year Wikimedia Indonesia can continue the translation of the remaining Ki Hadjar Dewantara's correspondences, which were digitized from Dewantara Kirti Griya Museum Library in Yogyakarta. More than 160 pages have been translated from English, Dutch, Javanese language into Indonesian language, so that the contents of the letters can be read by general Indonesian people, who do not speak English, Dutch, and/or Javanese language.

All translations are available at each talk page of the each document file page on Wikimedia Commons. For instance, the translation of this file can be accessed at its talk page.

GLAM presentations at WikiNusantara 2019

Rachmat and Harditaher (Hardiansyah) participated at WikiNusantara 2019 conference held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Rachmat was a speaker in GLAM I session and delivered a presentation on the timeline of GLAM effort done by Wikimedia Indonesia since 2013, while Hardiansyah spoke in GLAM II session and talked about the position of GLAM initiatives in Indonesia, some opportunities, challenges and strategies that can be done together for an open access, and the urgency of content digitization that should be executed by GLAM institutions in Indonesia.

A. Damhoeri's digital library on Commons

Wikimedia Indonesia, in November 2018, joined forces with local digitization team led by Dr. Pramono in West Sumatra, has successfully digitized private collections of A. Damhoeri, a prominent litterateur of West Sumatra. He wrote many books and collected a huge of books, mainly about religious and Minangkabau culture-related books in his library. Unfortunately, as he passed away, it is not well-maintained, so more than half of the collections are damaged.

However, these collections are now safe as the digitization team helped the family to reorganize the books and digitized most of the collections. Some of them are available on Commons, and will be uploaded by GLAM team of Wikimedia Indonesia gradually.

The Near East: from Leiden to Wikipedia

Spring 2019 saw a remarkable Dutch GLAM project: the NINO Wiki project of Dutch orientalists. In this project the Netherlands Institute for the Near East (NINO) is trying to give a boost to the information about Dutch and Belgian egyptologists, assyriologists and archaeologists –including photographs in the collections of NINO, many of them long forgotten portraits. This project was also one of the ways to celebrate the foundation of a chair of Assyriology in Leiden 101 years ago, in 1918.

The Netherlands Institute for the Near East is shaping this project in several ways: organizing three writing sessions together with volunteers from the institutes, digitizing parts of the photographic collection and writing and improving articles in several language versions of Wikipedia. Starting point was a working page in Wikidata, in which an inventory was made. By making Wikidata entries for Dutch and Belgian orientalists and institutes, all partners could easily get an overview.

The first writing session was held on 19 March 2019. Several egyptologists and assyriologists were present, and Wikipedian Hanno Lans gave a general introduction to Wikipedia and the Wikidata project on researchers from the Netherlands. The second, more practical session, was held on 17 April. Carolien van Zoest (NINO) coordinated this session. The third NINO-Wiki meeting will be held on 15 May in Leiden.

Saturday April 6th, a Wikipedia workshop took place at the Zeeland Museum in Middelburg. In the context of the double writing week about Zeeland, the aim was to improve and expand the content about the province of Zeeland on Wikipedia.

There was a lot of media attention for this activity. Was Zeeland so poorly covered on Wikipedia? Were complaints received from Zeeland residents? Why is it that there is not yet an article on the Zeeland knot? The media wrote about it in the newspaper, talked about it on the radio and it was also broadcasted on local television.

Wiki goes Caribbean

On April 26th, Danielle Jansen, project leader of the Wiki Goes Caribbean project, Denise Jansen (WMNL) and Michelle van Lanschot (Erfgoed Gelderland) travelled to the ABC islands to work with heritage institutions and (new) Wikimedians to improve, expand and update the knowledge about these islands. From April 29 to May 10 there will be various training courses and workshops on Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire, intended for both more experienced and new Wikimedians. The heritage partners are also looking at ways in which they can continue with Wikimedia in the future, and the WMNL delegation can provide them with advice.



Oslo Freedom Forum, Riddu Riđđu, and Márkomeannu

A delegation from Wikimedia Norge is once again participating in the Oslo Freedom Forum, which this year is taking place 27-28 May in Oslo.
Oslo Freedom Forum is both an Interactive Expo of companies and tech organizations working to advance human rights, as well as panels and workshops on a variety of topics, art installations and musical performances. Wikimedia Norge will be part of the Interactive Expo.
With Oslo honored as the European Green Capital of 2019, this year's Oslo Freedom Forum will also feature a special focus on human rights as it relates to climate change. The Oslo Freedom Forum is now in its 11th year.

Samisk kunnskap på nett is Wikimedia Norge's ongoing project to expand the Northern Sami language Wikipedia and to improve the amount and quality of topics on Sami topics on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. As part of our efforts on this project, Wikimedia Norge is this year participating in both the Riddu Riđđu festival on 10 July -14 July and the Márkomeannu music festival on 25-28 July. At Márkomeannu we are part of the festival library organized by Nordland county library.


Outcomes of A+F, new uploads, GLAM conference

Good vibes and good outcomes: After Art+Feminism 2019

A number of Art+Feminism editing meetings and workshops were run up until the very end of March and the results are in. People enthusiastic for the idea of closing the gender gap, empowering new editors and focusing on themes from outside the existing main narrative in Wikipedia have asked Wikimedia Polska to help organise meet-ups and trainings in 3 cities - Wrocław, Łódź and Kraków. All meetups were a success both in terms of meeting and training new editors, and creating interesting new entries for Wikipedia. Altogether the participants have written over 40 new articles and extended close to 300 (see statistics of the editing group from Wrocław and the group from Łódź). The first meetup was organised last year at the Museum of Art in Łódź thanks to the initiative of Alicja Kujawska, a scholar and activist living and working in the city.

In Kraków, students and teachers at the Academy of Arts created a fanzine for women about editing Wikipedia, remixing public domain images from Wikimedia Commons and public domain artwork from the POLONA digital library. The resulting zine contains the idea of A+F, basic rules of editing Wikipedia, information about the gender gap and even a psychological game titled 'Which type of Wikipedian are you?' New public domain scans from Mazovian Digital Library

In April 2019 the Mazovian Digital Library has uploaded 400 new files - archival illustrations in the public domain - into Wikimedia Commons, bringing the total number of files from that library to over 2200 items. This is a considerable success for our partnership as it only began in late December 2018.

The images include photographs of urban buildings, architecture, construction and trade from magazines such as Tygodnik Illustrowany, Biesiada Literacka and Przyjaci el Ludu. Some fascinating depictions of urban life in the nineteenth century can be found in the collection, as well of portraits of many notable people living in the period - a great opportunity for writing new Wikipedia entries to match the portraits. Files are currently undergoing categorisation by volunteers. The collection of all Mazovian Library illustrations can be seen in the Mazovian Digital Library category. Everyone is cordially invited to view the new illustrations, reuse them or help categorise the images!

Heritage on the Web Conference in Katowice

On May 8th the Regional Institute of Culture in Katowice and Wikimedia Polska held a conference on online cultural heritage in GLAM context. The aim of the conference was to familiarise smaller institutions from the region with the practicalities of cooperating with Wikipedia (OTRS permissions, licensing issues) as well as some of the opportunities which arise from GLAM-WIKI work. larger OpenGLAM initiatives (work with Mazovian Digital Library and the National Library in Warsaw, cooperation with the National Museum in Warsaw) and new digitisation effors in the region were also presented.

For beginner institutions, representatives of NIMOZ - the Polish Institute of Museology and Heritage - presented official European and Polish regulations related to licensing, public domain GLAM content and good practices in digitisation and online dissemination. The event was attended by several dozen museum, library and cultural centre professionals. Wikimedia Polska would like to thank the Regional Institute of Culture in Katowice for helping organise the event and invite local GLAMs. The Regional Institute in Katowice is the first cultural institution from the Silesian Voivodeship to actively contribute to Wikimedia as well as function as a hub of know-how for open knowledge projects in the region.

Representatives of Ministry of Culture and Information and Wikimedia Serbia

Ministry of Culture and Information of Republic of Serbia once again approved project proposal by Wikimedia Serbia for organizing and realizing three two-months Wikipedian in residence programs in 2019. This is the second year of financial support by Serbian Ministry of culture for the GLAM program. During 2018 funds of Ministry was used to realize three two-month residences - in the Museum of Yugoslavia, Museum of Vojvodina and Historical Archive of Pirot. But the state support opened the door of many other cultural institutions for residences and other GLAM models of cooperation. Wikipedians spent time hard working in the City Museum of Vrbas, Historical Archive of Pancevo, Republic Institute for the protection of cultural heritage of Serbia, Museum of Vojvodinian Slovaks… More than 2100 images are released, 370 new articles were written, 27 significantly improved, and 18 books with 5 photo-albums were digitized (2950 digitized pages). This year Wikipedians will resident in the National Museum in Zrenjanin, Museum of Vojvodinian Slovaks and Historical Archive of Negotin.

During the local Wikipedian conference WikiLive, held 20 and 21 April, Wikipedians in residences from Serbia gathered to discuss all aspects of their work in cultural institutions. WIRs, with the GLAM coordinator, were analyzing mistakes, challenges, achieved outcomes, possibilities for the future cooperations and potential solutions of various issues. It was a very productive meet-up, showing us some great guidelines for developing this program.


Edit-a-thons in Madrid and Brasilia, Wiki Loves Falles and Club Wikipedia

In April 27 was run the Editatón en el Museo de Historia de Madrid in the Museo de Historia de Madrid, organized by the museum and Wikimedia España. The aim of the event was to improve and create new content about the history of the buildings, streets and squares of the district where the museum is located. In addition, the museum released free files (paintings and old and new pictures) about the topics to be edited.

The Spanish Embassy in Brasilia, the Instituto Cervantes in Brasilia, the Secretaria de Educação, the Secretaria de Cultura, Território Criativo and Instituto Bem Cultural, with the support of Wikimedia España and wikipedians from Brazil, organized the Editatón Brasilia 2019, an edit-a-thon in Spanish about Brasilia in the capital of Brazil, celebratring the World Book Day, the Brasilia Day and the Spanish language Day.

Last April 12, Santiago Navarro Sanz, president of Wikimedia España, met Amparo Pons, librarian of the Biblioteca of the Museu valencià d'etnologia and current president of the Col·legi Oficial de Bibliotecaris i Documentalistes de la Comunitat Valenciana to talk about the current collaborations and looking for new ones. The Museu valencià d'etnologia is a very active museum in the Wikimedia movement and its library ir a Bibliowiki.

The museum, with Wikimedia España and Amical Wikimedia, as well as the Associació d'Estudis Fallers, organized in March and April Wiki Loves Falles 2019, a special contest for the photo contest about festivities Wiki Loves Folk, but focused in the Falles, a celebration included in the UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage of humanity list. The 2019 edition reached 481 files uploaded.

Wikimedia España and the Biblioteca Reina Sofía of Universidad de Valladolid continue with their collaboration organizing the Club Wikipedia. This is a meet-up, organized the first Monday every month, that allows people interested in Wikimedia projects to learn about editing and other issues related to the projects, and regular collaborators to meet other users and to edit together.

FindingGLAMs, a project aimed at improving the coverage of GLAM institutions on Wikidata, is in full swing. This spring we have been busy building a crowdsourcing campaign to make it easier for GLAM professionals to edit and add data about the institutions they're familiar with – hopefully a valuable complement to official datasets which are often out of date or deficient! In the centre of the campaign is a new, GLAM-focused version of Monumental, which is being developed by Paweł Marynowski. We've also been working on getting the accompanying documentation up so that it's ready when the campaign starts mid-May.

Sheet music from Musikverket

Wikimedia Sverige's collaboration project with the Swedish Performing Arts Agency continues. For the first time, Musikverket has shared some scanned sheet music from its archives. The files are linked to the recordings that we uploaded previously, making it possible to go from the music sheet to the audio file – and the other way round.

The first pilot of the Wikimedia Commons Data Roundtripping project is out!

Wikimedia Commons Data Roundtripping project partner Swedish Performing Arts Agency and the team invites everyone to translate descriptions of historical glass plate pictures from Swedish to English. The translation drive continues for two more days until midnight May 9th CET.

Translators can use Google Translate as a starting point and then finalise the translation before submitting. They can follow the progress in a progress bar or see how they perform by checking out the leaderboard. The organisation setting up the campaign can download the results as a csv to import into their own system.

The other two pilots will be released later. Nationalmuseum pilot will retrieve authority ids from Wikidata for items in their collections to make use of third party data about those items. The Nordic Museum pilot will create depicts statements to their contributions in Wikimedia Commons.

Join translating!

Digikult

At the conference Digikult several presentations related to the Wikimedia projects were given. From the National Museum of Fine Arts Anna Jansson (working with communications) and Karin Glaseman (digital coordinator) talked about the journey from Open Access to Open Museum, and the work they have done making both data and collections open and available. From Wikimedia Sverige Axel Pettersson talked about being a Wikimedian in Residence at the National Museums for World Culture and Alicia Fagerving presented about connecting and including library data in Wikidata, and the extra value that gives to institutions. Also related is a presentation by Albin Larsson from the Swedish National Heritage Board about generous search interfaces and ways that can improve the way users investigate and explore collections.

On the last day of Digikult Aron Ambrosiani form the Nordic Museum, Alicia Fagerving, and Albin Larsson hosted a Wikimedia Commons workshop introducing the attendees to the basics of Wikimedia Commons and the Pattypan upload tool.

Licensing

Parallell to the workshop about Wikimedia Commons another workshop about licensing and Creative Commons were hosted by Kristina Alexandersson and Axel Pettersson. After talking about open and free licenses and discussing cases from the participants collections most of the questions concerned things like GDPR, Personality rights and other Non-copyright restrictions issues.


Wikidata and Oxford GLAMs

There has been less activity this month due to the Easter break. A lot of Bodleian images have been moved to a different server, so some time has been spent in bulk edits to Wikidata and Commons to reflect this rather than adding new content. At the Open Educational Resources Conference in Galway, Ireland, Martin gave a workshop on using Wikidata queries to explore issues of representation in online spaces such as Google Doodles or Project Gutenberg, with ideas from Dr Alice White. The main work this month has been internal advocacy of how Wikimedia volunteer work benefits the reach and profile of GLAM institutions.

A new page for the Oxford project gives some overviews of the including an animated video about how Wikidata can help with GLAM discovery and an article with examples of how Wikimedia volunteers raise awareness of the collections of the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology.

Metropolitan Museum of Art to join Wiki Loves Pride in June

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will join Wiki Loves Pride 2019 in June with the Wikimedia LGBT+ user group, Wiki Loves Love, and Consumer Reports. The museum will be supporting one pillar of this wide-ranging campaign with an in-person edit-a-thon and global online effort focused on LGBT artists and artworks with LGBT themes. Those interested in helping to organize on Commons or their local Wikipedia are encouraged to sign up on the meta page.

Welcome to the new, and separate, This Month in GLAM report about Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons (SDC).

The project Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons adds functionalities for structured and machine-readable data to files on Wikimedia Commons, so that they become easier to view, search, edit, organize and re-use. To achieve that, the Commons backend is migrated to Wikibase, the same technology as used for Wikidata.

What is already released, and what is coming?

Already released on SDC: File Captions and Depicts

In early May 2019, you can already add multilingual file captions and Depicts statements on Wikimedia Commons.

File captions

File pages on Wikimedia Commons now contain a field where you can add - and translate - multilingual file captions that describe the file. The text in these captions is included in Wikimedia Commons' search function.

Depicts statements

File pages now include a 'Structured data' tab. When you click this tab, you can add 'Depicts' information about the things (people, places, species...) that are shown in the file. In this case, the photo shows the war memorial Monument Demba et Dupont in Dakar, Senegal in the foreground (hence marked as 'prominent'). In the background you see Dakar Station.

This is not a screenshot of the same file, but of the Wikidata item Q61483227 that represents the sculpture itself. Many files on Wikimedia Commons can depict this artwork! Do note that, on Wikidata, there is further information on what the sculpture itself depicts (a Senegalese Tirailleur).
It is not necessary to include this information on the file itself. Later this year, the search function on Wikimedia Commons will support 'Depicts of depicts': when a file on Wikimedia Commons depicts a Wikidata item that itself has Depicts statements, those depicted things (people, species, objects...) will be discoverable on Wikimedia Commons too.

GLAM pilot projects

This month we highlight the ongoing work on a Wikimedia Commons microcontributions tool: ISA.

ISA is a fun, multilingual, mobile-first 'microcontributions' tool, that makes it easy for (groups of inexperienced) people to add structured data to images on Wikimedia Commons.

  • With ISA, you can choose a pre-defined set of images on Commons and then ask contributors to 'tag' these with multilingual structured metadata. Points are counted for each contribution, and therefore it is possible to organize 'tagging' or microcontributions competitions or challenges with ISA.
  • ISA is originally built to provide better multilingual and structured descriptions of c:Wiki Loves Africa images. But it is also developed to be useful to all of the Wiki Loves competitions, and eventually for all media files on Wikimedia Commons.
  • ISA is developed as a collaboration between Wiki In Africa, Histropedia and the Structured Data on Commons project.
  • What does the name mean? 'Isa' is the chiShona language word for 'put' or 'place', but it can also serve as an acronym for Information Structured Acceleration, Information Structure Additions and more.

Libraries in Wikidata White Paper

The American Association of Research Libraries published a White Paper describing the opportunities for libraries, especially research and university libraries, to participate in the Wikidata community. Following a process similar to the open-consultation and feedback cycles we used for the Wikipedia opportunities papers in 2016/17, the White Paper was written by a committee assembled by ARL and including Wikimedians and librarians working on Wikidata, but included a public consultation period that helped refine and clarify the paper.

The paper was written with decision makers within research libraries in mind: thus the recommendations and survey of topics, is designed to be accessible and to discuss the range of different recommendations and opportunities across the structured data in Wikimedia for libraries. The paper is also a very good tool for reading about the current "state of the field" for Wikidata in GLAM practice. Though the focus is on library needs, many of the examples, citations and other content are useful for any other kind of Wikidata partnership.

Special thanks to everyone on the steering committee for the paper, especially Smallison, who worked closely with the staff at ARL to pull together and advance the paper.
