Strategic salon around GLAM perspectives
Context
In order to grow the User Group of Côte d'Ivoire and strengthen its GLAM partnerships, a strategic salon was held in the city of Abidjan on Friday, August 02, 2019. This activity brought together representatives of WikiClubs of Côte, coming from three cities: Bouaké, Ferkessédougou and Korhogo.
Reflection activity
Strategic reflections focused on three themes :
- Capacity building (Develop a six-month renewable activities program, build the writing and digitization capabilities of Glam trainers)
- The Health of Groups (group survival, numeric growth, members well-being, fundraising, distribution, financial autonomy, etc.)
- Products and technologies (to put in place in order to achieve the various objectives, etc.)

August was a busy month for Wikimedia Finland, whose members racked up nearly 4500 km to work with GLAMs from Stockholm to Sevettijärvi in the north of Finland and back.

Wikimedia Finland was represented in Wikimania 2019 through the Saami language and culture presentations and workshops, which discussed GLAM work to some degree within the broader topics:

Post-Wikimania tours of Helsinki’s GLAMs
Wikimedia Finland held two tours of Helsinki for people coming from Wikimania. The first tour was a photography walk from Senate Square through the Finnish National Library, the Helsinki University Main Library in Kaisa-talo, and Helsinki Central Station on our way to Helsinki Central Library Oodi. The unplanned highlight of the trip was the VRwandlung event at Oodi. This was an interactive installation where one appears in the middle of the action as Kafka’s Gregor Samsa transforms into a huge insect.
The next day, we attended a guided tour of Finland’s Parliament House with another group of people from Wikimania. As the tour took place during the Parliament’s summer break, we were able to take photographs without people in them. After the tour, we had lunch at Oodi. The Finto team from the National Library of Finland invited us to visit the library. After the tour of the old library building, the group split and we had a meeting discussing the use of Wikidata and Wikibase with the team. At the same time part of the group checked out the From Dice to Bytes – 200 years of Finnish Gaming exhibition.

Õõutveäkka — celebrating 70 years of the Skolt Saami in Sevettijärvi
After World War II, the Skolt communities were evacuated from the traditional areas they had lived in, when these areas were ceded by Finland to the Soviet Union. They were resettled in the areas surrounding Lake Inari in 1949, one of which is Sevettijärvi. Every 10 years, the Skolt community organizes an event to mark this anniversary. This year marks the 70th anniversary of their resettlement. The Skolts were joined by other Saami communities and Orthodox Christians from other communities as well.
Wikimedia Finland had been invited by the Secretary General of the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation to hold a depict-a-thon at the event on August 24. There are numerous photos of Skolt families in Commons from before their resettlement, but most of the captions on these photos are poor at best. Our idea was to add new captions and to improve old ones with the goal of giving the community back the power to decide what information and what kind of information should be displayed with these images. In addition, we were prepared to digitize new material. Some translations of Wikidata concepts were made at the event, like with the young girls who added translations into Saami for some of the Moomin characters or another person who added the Saami equivalents for fox.
As 2019 is the UN’s international year of the indigenous language, we had decided to honor the event with a special sticker that employs traditional Skolt beadwork patterns with text in Skolt Saami wishing everyone a happy year of the indigenous language 2019.
We shared our long table with the magnificent language specialists from Giellagáldu, a language-resource center for the Saami languages jointly financed by the Saami parliaments of Norway, Sweden, and Finland, who patiently taught us to pronounce the word for sticker in various Saami languages. These were also entered in Wikidata. At the other end of the table, the Saami Youth council were making badges, and we had the opportunity to create one of our sticker.
We spent a lot of time discussing the Wiki Loves Monuments contest and the selection of cultural heritage items in the context of the Finnish competition’s theme this year, the Sacred Place. We also had the chance of discussing some aspects of our work with the presidents of the Norwegian and Finnish Saami Parliaments.
Meeting GLAMs in Inari
On August 26, we met up with representatives of the Saami Archives in Finland and Siida, the National Museum of the Finnish Sámi, to discuss mutual interests. We hope to initiate activities that make use of Wikidata for language revitalisation and to develop practices of opening indigenous content in respectful ways on Wikimedia platforms. This can include taking personality rights more into consideration as well as limiting the distribution of certain materials based on otherwise unprotected community protocols.
Problematic Data Workshop for GLAMs in Stockholm
Susanna presented ideas from our previous work and discussions with the Saami communities at the Workshop on Problematic data in Stockholm on August 30. The workshop brought together practitioners from Swedish GLAMs to share their experiences working with compelling content in a workshop setting. Although we are not yet in the position to present results, we were able to display the directions which we have to chosen to follow. One of them is to advance tools and best practices to work with personality rights in Wikimedia projects, and we set up a new Telegram channel for it with the participants of the breakout group.
Wiki Loves Monuments in Finland
The theme of the year in Finland is Sacred Place, which has shifted the focus of the competition to archaelogical sites and religious buildings. We have invited two mentors to join us. They will write about the topic in Wikimedia Finland's blog during the competition and participate as jury members. Mari Korpimäki is the Secretary General of the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation and Reetta Karhunkorva works as Senior Forest Culture Specialist at the Finnish Forest Museum Lusto.
The Finnish competition also features two rephotography series: the series Lost Places and Buildings covers the whole country, while the images by the photographer Signe Brander are being rephotographed in a series focusing on Helsinki.
As part of Wikimedia Finland’s outreach to better include the Saami- and Swedish-speaking communities in Finland, the Wiki Loves Monuments website has been translated into Northern Saami, Inari Saami, Skolt Saami, and Swedish for the first time.

The Sacred Place workshop at the Finnish Museum of Photography
Wikimedia Finland organized a workshop and public discussion at the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki as part of the Wiki Loves Monuments program on September 5. The discussion addressed images depicting indigenous communities entering the public domain, how community control is lost, and how it could be regained. Mari Korpimäki, the mentor in the WLM competition and Secretary General of Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation; Marja Helander, a renowned Saami visual artist; and Tarmo Toikkanen, a copyright specialist chairing Open Knowledge Finland and Creative Commons Finland were invited to discuss different aspects of this question.
Mari Korpimäki started the discussion by unfolding the story of an image of her Skolt relatives. The family had been shocked to find the image painted as a 7-story high mural in the Finnish city of Turku by an artist who claimed it conveyed a special local feeling, which was absurd considering that the photo was taken in the far northeast corner of Finland before World War II. In the discussion that followed, Anni Wallenius from the Finnish Museum of Photography was able to shed light on the circumstances under which the image had been made openly available. Kimberli Mäkäräinen brought up another example of the same set of images where one of the images had been colorized and copyrighted by an artist and sold as phone covers and printed bags.
Marja Helander, who showed her early works depicting her relatives, reminded us about the principle Nothing about them without them.
Tarmo Toikkanen introduced us to the principles of the General Data Protection Regulation, which may be too restricting in masking out images depicting ethnicity on one hand and powerless to limit the reuse of images depicting the deceased on the other. In the end, we discussed if Traditional Knowledge labels could be used to limit access to sensitive content.
At the end of the event, Kimmo gave a presentation on rephotography. It was raining so we did not go outside to rephotograph, but instead continued the discussion on the open content for about 1 hour until the museum closed.
The discussion will continue among the Finnish GLAMs. The first outcome is that the openness organizations Wikimedia Finland and AvoinGLAM of Open Knowledge Finland will have a common representative in the Finnish LAM jurisprudence group and can jointly develop the theme of “The Right to be Remembered”.
Digitization of banknotes and introduction to structured data on Commons (continued)
Digitization of banknotes at Museum Uang Sumatera
Following memorandum of understanding signing between Wikimedia Indonesia and Museum Uang Sumatera in June 2019, the digitization activities started in August 2019. In five days (from August 5 to 9, 2019), we scanned and photographed various forms of old banknotes, issued during 1910s until 1960s, from the museum's collection. There are tens of banknotes and coins digitized. We expected to upload them to Wikimedia Commons this September.

Introduction to structured data on Commons and ISA workshop
On August 30, 2019, Wikimedia Indonesia organized Wikimedia Commons, Structured data on Commons, as well as Information Structured Acceleration (ISA) workshop. This event was intended to introduce how to contribute in Wikimedia Commons and learn the licenses used in Wikimedia Commons. As part of GLAM 2019, we also expanded the event to introduce structured data on Commons, and utilized ISA tool to add depicts and captions to the images under Wiki Cinta Budaya 2018 and Wiki Loves Earth 2019 in Indonesia.

In August OlafJanssen developed a Map making workshop – from Wikidata to interactive off-Wiki maps in three steps
In this 90-120 minutes workshop you will learn how to make both flat, clustered, layered, embedded, interactive, on-Wiki and off-Wiki maps from sets of geo-referenced (P625) items in Wikidata.
You will do this in 3 modules of approx. 30-40 minutes each:
- Module 1: You will start by making various basic flat and clustered maps in Wikidata using SPARQL queries. Next you will make some layered maps (https://bit.ly/3368DPk), where groups of items can be toggled on/off in the map.
- Module 2: After having explored maps in the Wikidata query interface, you are now ready to learn how to embed Wikidata-driven maps in other Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia and Commons (examples). In addition to SPARQL we will look at OpenStreetMap, GeoJSON and the Mediawiki Kartographer extension.
- Module 3: Finally you will learn the steps for creating interactive, layered Wikidata-driven maps that can be used off-Wiki, ie. in regular HTML pages. In addtition to the above tools & techniques, we will use some basic Python, Jupyter Notebooks (PAWS), Jupyter-Leaflet and Jupyter-widgets.

Women in Red: collaboration with The National Library in Norway and Oslo Metropolitan University
Student writing biographies
In a continued collaboration between Wikimedia Norge, The National Library in Oslo and Oslo Metropolitan University, a group of nine students will this semester contribute to the Women in Red project. Together with The National Library, we have defined four areas with a very poor coverage of women's biographies on Wikipedia, which reflects the poor coverage on this areas in history in general. The areas are:
- Norwegian Women's movement
- Authors of children and youth fiction
- Norwegian fiction translators
- Immigrant literature (from around the Middle Ages to 1945)
The National Library will guide the students in using sources from their collection to write the biographies and Wikimedia Norge will help with trainings in Wikipedia editing. This is the second semester this project is offered as an elective for library- and archive students at Oslo Metropolitan University. We look forward to working with the students and read the articles they will write or improve.
GLAM communities of practice; Problematic data
WMSE-WMF joint initiative concerning GLAM communities of practice
Starting from July 2019, Wikimedia Sverige and the Wikimedia Foundation's GLAM team work together on an initiative to create a better and more sustainable technical infrastructure for global heritage and content partnerships.
This initiative is still in its very early stages. A first presentation about it was given at Wikimania, and on the submission page you can also find the notes with questions from the session.

Problematic data
On Friday, August 30, we had a workshop in Stockholm for GLAM institutions on problematic data on open platforms. Bas Nederveen from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam gave a lecture on their terminology projects and how they worked with descriptive information in their database. The workshop focused on what has been done in the area and how the institutions want to do when sensitive material is to be released with free licenses. The workshop is part of the project FindingGLAMs and was carried out with the Swedish National Heritage Board. All the lectures were recorded and are available on Commons. Feel free to reach out to us and let us know about other work in the area.

New and old collaborations
Oxford
I (Martin Poulter) attended Wikimania and the Hackathon and spoke on Shani Evenstein's Wikidata and Education panel about the training I have been delivering at Oxford. I also announced the new partnership between Wikimedia UK and the Khalili Collections. Also working on writing a final report and blog posts, and taking some leave.
Coventry University
As with any UK university in August, the Coventry University residency went through a lull period. Nonetheless, the first staff training session was held, with several non-academic staff taught to edit Wikipedia.
The highlight was the hosting of Wikimedia UK's "Wikimedian in Residence Summit", with several WMUK staff and WiRs meeting to share experience and receive updates. The group managed to fit in a guided visit to the University's Lanchester Archives.

WikiProject Cleveland Museum of Art
Following the transformation of the Cleveland Museum of Art into an Open Access institution, (see January 2019), the Ohio Wikimedians User Group has been collaborating with Neal Stimler and the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) to launch WikiProject Cleveland Museum of Art on the English Wikipedia. Inspired by WikiProject Metropolitan Museum of Art, the goal of this project is to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the Museum, which includes articles on notable works and artists featured in their collection.

During the pre-conference days of Wikimania Liam Wyatt, in his Europeana capacity, organized the third European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting. Around 20 participants from various chapters, affiliates and other organizations shared experiences through lightning talks, demos and presentations of projects and ongoing activities, and discussed ways to move forward when it comes to common questions.
GLAM focus area at the Wikimania 2019 Hackathon
GLAM was a focus area at the Wikimania 2019 hackathon. A group of people worked together on GLAM-related projects there, and learned from each other, including about approaches to metadata roundtripping by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. One of the projects initiated and developed at the hackathon is Maps! Maps! Maps!, which aims to make historical maps more discoverable with the help of (structured) metadata.
Small GLAMs Wikidata Workshop
Using Wikimania and the fact that several Wikidata experts were in Stockholm Europeana (through Liam Wyatt), the National Heritage Board and Wikimedia Sverige invited staff from GLAM institutions to a Wikidata training day. Aiming for the smaller GLAMs, where metadata and structured data work is done by curators and staff that doesn't normally build big databases this was a beginners level introduction to what Wikidata is, how it can be used and what good it can do for GLAMs. 20 participants from all over Sweden learned how to add statements and ask sparql queries from experts such as David Haskiya and Jan Ainali, and were given demos of Pattypan and Wikibase by Paweł Marynowski and Jens Ohlig.
Discussing the future of Wikidata and Wikibase for libraries
Discussions about GLAM collaborations did not finish after Wikimania. The day after, those of us interested in how Wikidata and Wikibase can be used in national libraries gathered at the National Library of Sweden to attend an all-day event dedicated to this particular theme. The first ever Wikidata & Wikibase for National Libraries meeting was initiated by Europeana with the support of Wikimedia Sverige, Wikimedia Deutschland, and of course the National Library of Sweden, which is actively working with Wikidata as part of its open data strategy.
The day was divided into presentations and discussions, which allowed the participants to exchange experiences and learn from each other. With participants from the USA, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Germany, Poland and other countries we learned a variety of perspectives. What we had in common was curiosity and enthusiasm about what these new tools can bring to our work. Among the topics brought up were: Structured Data on Commons, federated Wikibase (and what exactly are our needs there in library context), roles and permissions in Wikibase (again focusing on the specific needs in libraries and archives), modelling of various types of resources (a perennial topic) and of course how to collaborate in a more organized and meaningful ways across national borders.
