Cooperation with Yerevan Drama Theatre Named After Hrachia Ghaplanian (continuation)
In december Wikimedia Armenia started a collaboration with Yerevan Drama Theatre named after Hrachia Ghaplanyan. As a result of this collaboration, the museum provided nearly 30 \ posters to be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons under free license.

In the frames of its "Preservation of culture" program, Wikimedia Armenia started a new project called "Singing Wikipedia". Nine Armenian popular and folk acapella songs have been recorded and uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. The songs were performed by a Wikimedia Armenia volunteer and a folk singer Anoush Stepanian. Acapella performance made it possible to publish the songs under free license, as they are either folk songs or their authors have lived and worked in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In the second stage of the project the editors are going to create and improve the articles of those folk songs on Armenian Wikipedia, complete their WikiData pages, thus giving an opportunity to create articles in various languages as well.

The Armenian famous photographer - Vahan Kochar, has begun cooperation with Wikimedia Armenia, as a part of the popularization of Armenian photographs and Armenian photography history. Vahan Kochar has a big photo collection and has written two books on Armenian photography history. As a result of the collaboration, Vahan Kochar started uploading photos of famous Armenians from his own collection to Wikimedia Commons. The photographs will be used in many Wikipedia articles. The project is ongoing.

2019 Australia's Year of the Public Domain
What a happy new year! Changes to Australian copyright law taking effect from 1 January 2019 (Copyright Amendment (Disability Access and other Measures) Act 2017) mean at last we have new material entering the public domain. A key change is that unpublished materials such as diaries, letters and shipping manifests will be subject to the same copyright term as their published counterparts, and orphan works have been given a term of 70 years.
Wikimedia Australia looks forward to working with GLAM partners and copyright organisations through the year to maximise awareness and use of these resources.
Wiki Loves Monuments Australian finalists
Congratulations to the Australian finalists for Wiki Loves Monuments 2018. As well as some amazing photographs, participation in Wiki Loves Monuments provided an impetus for updating data from local heritage registers in Wikidata.

Writing weeks German-speaking Community
From 10 to 21 December 2018 we organised the writing weeks about the German-speaking Community of Belgium. The concept is simple, you create a project page and ask as many people as possible to write an article about an area on Earth. Almost everywhere around the world there is a rich cultural society, as well as sports, politics, science, nature, history and much more. By focussing on a certain area, editors can still work on their fields of interest, only then focussed on that field of interest from that particular area. In essence a writing week is an online activity, but during the writing weeks period also local edit-a-thons and workshops can be organised on site.
In earlier years we have organised multiple writing weeks before. This year we were thinking in our community what would be a nice as area to focus on to get it better described on Wikipedia. In the months before we imported the protected monuments from the German-speaking Community to Wikidata, as they have their own monuments system with 194 monuments, but still missing on Wikidata or wrongly tagged. During the import it was noticed that many of these historical sites had no Wikipedia article yet, so this area seemed a great subject to organise the writing weeks about. This area is located at the eastern border of Belgium, with the Netherlands to the north and Luxembourg to the south, as well as on the edge of German, Dutch and French, so a nice area to work together throughout the various language communities of Belgium (and beyond). To coordinate the project, we created a general project page on Meta, but for the local language communities a page in Dutch, German and French. Soon after this was followed by enthousiasts from the Italian and Lombard Wikipedia.
During the writing weeks we organised on Saturday 15 December 2018 an edit-a-thon in Eupen, the capital city of the area. For this event we found the great location of the youth hostel (Jugendherberge) in Eupen, situated on a high hill on the edge of the upper part of the city, looking down on the lower part of the city and the edge of the High Fens, tentative World Heritage Site. Some enthusiasts came earlier and visited the area and made photos.
A second edit-a-thon was organised by the enthusiasts from Trento in Italy on 20 December 2018.
In total over 400 content pages have been created or improved, both on Wikipedia and Wikidata.

Since around the start of Wikimedia Belgium years ago, we work and have worked with many content partners. But in all these years we have especially intensively worked together with PACKED vzw, the expertise centre for digital heritage. They help institutions in the heritage and cultural sector in the current digital age, including sharing knowledge, images and data on the Wikimedia platforms. Over the years they have built a vast network of partners and have an important role in both support and communication. Because of their excellent position in the cultural heritage sector (GLAM), we did many projects together and hosted many events together to reach out to the many cultural institutions of Belgium and share with them the mission we have as Wikimedia.
As PACKED vzw gets funded by the regional government of Belgium, it was the decided that having multiple organisations in the cultural sector is not a good idea, and thus that three existing organisations will be shut down on 1 January 2019, and a new organisation is set-up which incorporates also the work of the expertise centre and the two other organisations.
To celebrate the many projects and events we organised to create more awareness about the Wikimedia platforms and to get more content on the platforms, as well as the long time collaboration together, we organised on 18 December 2018 an end of year drink in one event together with the award ceremony of our annual photo contest Wiki Loves Heritage.
The first part of the event was focussed on the many cultural partners we have worked together with over the years. During this part it was summarised what we had achieved over the years, including the thousands of images on Wikimedia Commons and the thousands of data records imported to Wikidata.
Wiki Loves Heritage
In Europe 2018 was the European Year of Cultural Heritage. In line with this international thematic year we organised together with multiple partners a Belgian photo contest to make our heritage more visible for the public. This photo contest is called Wiki Loves Heritage and in this photo contest are all four types of heritage eligible.
- Immovable heritage are archaeological sites, monuments, cultural-historical landscapes, war relics and city and villagescapes.
- Movable heritage are the collections of art objects, utensils, decorative objects, archival documents, visual material, historic tools and vehicles, etc., which are stored in museums, archives and heritage libraries.
- Immaterial heritage are the non-tangible habits or customs of the past that one cherishes and still practices today. For example, parties, stories, songs, traditions, social customs, rituals, crafts ...
- Maritime heritage is the nautical heritage that can sail or float. This concerns both seagoing vessels and vessels for inland waters with various propulsion types, or without their own propulsion, which were used for pleasure or for professional purposes.
The photo contest started on 15 June 2018 and ran until halfway November 2018 and resulted in over 4300 images of heritage in Belgium. (contest page | images category)

To celebrate the great result, we organised for everyone in Brussels an award ceremony on 18 December 2018 in Brussels, following on the end of year drink that focussed on the partners of the cultural sector. There the photographers of the winning photos received their prize and were thanked for the great photos. See also the Belgian jury report. After the award ceremony we had a drink to celebrate.
Besides there was a Belgian jury that judged all the photos for the whole of Belgium, there was also a regional jury in Flanders and the award ceremony of the Flanders jury will be on 23 February 2019 in Antwerp.
Google Art and GLAM initiatives in Brazil
GLAM initiatives are not the only ones that are contributing to the online and large-scale aggregation of archives of cultural institutions. Another major initiative is from Google, which started as the Google Art Project (GAP), in 2011, and currently is called “Google Arts & Culture”.
The GA&C platform is composed of several Google projects, such as: Historic Moments, with historical exhibits; World Wonders Project, with Street View of world heritage sites by UNESCO; Street Art Project, with contemporary street art; and GAP.
Google Art partnerships usually take place in three ways. The first one is similar to the GLAM initiatives. In it, the works are made available on the platform with images and metadata provided by the institution, but without any content increase. The metadata may vary in complexity depending on the work done by the cultural institution itself.
The second and third ways are made by Google. One is the production of gigapixel (7 billion megapixels) images of certain paintings. The other is the Street View, made with three-dimensional photographs taken within the physical space of the institution, with the intention of imitating a real visit to the place.
Since its entry in Brazil, Google Art has already made many partnerships with institutions. Among them is Pinacoteca, an important state museum, and the Paulista Museum (Ipiranga Museum), which also has a GLAM initiative under development.

At Pinacoteca, Google made the first Brazilian gigapixel photo, in 2012, with the painting "Saudade", by Almeida Júnior. And the first Street View, but only on the first floor of the museum.
Initially, the total number of files available was only 98. Currently, 234 items of this institution are available on the platform, with some dozens of gigapixel works. However, a few more are planned to be shared in the coming months, as a team of photographers worked at the institution again in the middle of 2018. Some of this content has already been made available on-wiki, including some of the gigapixel produced.
In recent months, Google's partnership with the Museu Paulista has also grown. 1057 items of this institution were made available on the platform, among them is the gigapixel of "Independência ou Morte", the largest painting ever photographed by the initiative (415 cm high and 760 cm wide).
The Museu Paulista Wiki-GLAM initiative also benefits from the partnership of this museum with Google, since the GA&C platform serves as an alternative for identification of the paintings, since the museum's own website can not offer this option.
In recent weeks, users participating in the Museu Paulista GLAM have made links between the items in Google Art and Wikidata. This process will be available shortly. Some of the gigapixel produced in Paulista Museum have also been uploaded to Commons.
Collaboration with RJVD Municipal Public Library
Punjabi Wikimedians have collaborated with Rajindra Victoria Silver Jubilee Municipal Public Library in Patiala, Punjab. The library is over 80 years old and has over 65000 books in Punjabi, Hindi, English, Urdu, Sanskrit, and Persian language. Wikilover90 has been working with the library as a Wikimedian in Residence since November 2018. The government library has given permission to digitize the copyright free books and WiR is working with the library staff to find copyright-free works. The institution is actively assisting by allocating a staff member for digitization. Over 7000 pages have been digitized as a part of this collaboration as of now.

The National Central Library of Florence hosted on December 7th the 2018 edition of the meeting Sfide e alleanze tra Biblioteche e Wikipedia. The event involved more than 70 participants.
Neapolitan Wikisource
The Wikimedia language committee has approved the launch of the Neapolitan Wikisource project at the end of November. On Multilingual Wikisource, the pages in Neapolitan are more than 10,000, and a growing interest is arising around the Wikisource projects as a whole, also as a consequence of the annual itWikiCon meetings, that strengthened the community of the Italian speaking users. The Neapolitan language has over 7,500,000 native speakers, distributed mainly between Italy and North America.
WLM 2018 national and local awards
The national winners of WLM 2018 in Italy were announced by Wikimedia Italia in late November. Right after, the volunteers who promoted the contest at regional level also revealed their local winners and organized events to celebrate the best photographers.
On December the 1st, the award ceremony of WLM Tuscany occurred in Pistoia. The event celebrated a long effort regarding specifically the province of Pistoia this year. WLM in Tuscany was a final result of an accurate process of creation of wikidata items and requests for permission processed by local authorities (there is no FOP in Italy). It also celebrated the overwhelming percentage of uploaded files from Tuscany (circa 40% of the national global upload in 2018). A second local ceremony was held in Piombino, Livorno, on December the 22nd and a third one is scheduled in Pescia on February the 3rd. A press review about WLM2018 in Tuscany is available on meta.
An award ceremony was also organized in Verona to celebrate the winners of the second edition of Wiki Loves Veneto: the event took place on December 7th at Biblioteca Civica di Verona, that also hosted an exhibition of the best photographs collected in Veneto this year. Also, on December in Abruzzo the first edition of Wiki Loves Abruzzo had two award cerimonies, on 27th in the city of Giulianova, and on 30th in the city of Guardiagrele.

The University of Naples Federico II hosted a meeting organized by the regional section of the National Association of Libraries (AIB), on December 14th.
University of Teramo European Documentation Centre (CDE)
The European Documentation Centre of the University of Teramo is leading a Project born under The 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage, with the support of The Representation in Italy of the European Commission and the Italian Network of the European Documenttation Centres (EDCs). The Project is called "Communities4Heritage: Heritage and Communities to promote the Cultural Heritage" with the Case study "Guardiagrele Wiki". The Project has started on October 31th, 2018, and is still running, to improve students' Information Literacy competences, digital skills (according to DIG.COMP.2.1.), to add value to Abruzzo with a pilot case in the ancient and well-known village Guardiagrele. In the Project are involved the Municipality (partner also for Wiki Loves Abruzzo), the Guardiagrele Opera Festival, Cultural Institutions, and famous Chef and Sommelier for the wine and food local cultural heritage.

On 7th of December 2018, as a result of the cooperation between "Shared Knowledge" - Wikimedia Macedonia and "Wikimedia Poland" and after a months of preparations and establishing contacts with the embassy of Poland, was opened the exhibition of photographs titled "Poland through photographs - in front of the eyes of the Macedonian public ". The celebration of the 100 years anniversary of the re-establishment of Polish independent statehood was another reason for organizing this photographic exhibition in late autumn in 2018. Over 30 visitors who attended the opening ceremony were briefly introduced about the Wikipedia its significance and meaning, the photographic and the general project collaboration between Wikimedia Macedonia and Wikimedia Poland and there was an opening address given by Mrs. Weronika Staniec-Porczyk deputy chief of the diplomatic mission of Poland in Macedonia, after which the audience had the opportunity to see the 20 images of nature landscapes and buildings of the cultural and historical heritage in Poland, which have been chosen as the best qualified pictures on the contest "Wiki Loves Earth" and "Wiki Loves Monument" held in Poland. All of the images have been printed with QR-codes of links of the articles on Macedonian Wikipedia, which have previously created by the Shared Knowledge employees and members of the Macedonian Wikipedia community. The next day, on 8th of December, in the morning the exhibition was attended by 10 students of Polish language on the Faculty of philology in Skopje who have afterwards participated on the edit-a-thon which was organized on the topics related with Poland. Exhibition of the images lasted for a week in the center for culture "Kočo Racin" in Skopje.
Wikipedia lectures with children in social risk
After a month of negotiations and talks with the Macedonian minister of Labor and Social Work Mrs. Mila Carovska, the director of the Institution of children at social risk "25 of May" Violeta Masevska and the chief tutor and teacher of the house in Vlae neighborhood of Skopje, Gabriela Jovanovska, on 7th of December we have started with the first Wikipedia lecture with the children in social risk who are living in groups of 5 children in six private houses in Skopje since September 2018 as a new reform in the child care system for this category of children. The first activity included one and a half hour of basic instruction and working on computer where the 5 children have created 6 new articles about items of school kit such as eraser, pencil sharpener, paperclips etc. This activity fit in the regular daily activities program of the houses which have computer with internet used by the children who are doing homework, reading books, doing sports, play games and learn handcrafts under surveillance and with help of 5 tutors in the house. At the end of the activity which was really enthusiastically accepted by the children all of them were given gifts consisted of the items of school kit. This successfully conducted pilot activity will be used as a pattern for the broader project of Wikipedia lectures intended for the children in social living in the other houses which will be implemented throughout the next year. The partnership with the ministry of labor in this activity will have a multiple benefit not just in expanding the knowledge of Wikipedia and enlarging the community but also providing help to many categories of people in the society who can be provided with help, support and benefit by having been introduced to this kind of knowledge and skill which is very useful in the modern information society. Moreover, this would be of benefit towards the trustworthiness of Wikipedia as a socially aware, caring and contributing brand in the society.

Technology Talk and Update on Wikipedia @ National Library of Malaysia
On 12 December 2018, the Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia held a Wikipedia meetup for the very first time in a library entitled Technology Talk and Update on Wikipedia under its Wikipedia Kuala Lumpur Meetup 6 official name (please refer to link for a full report). Representative of the national library were present during the meetup. The meetup was about the introduction of Wikipedia to the people of the national library and also collaboration on Wikipedia between the user group and the library.

In 27-28 November Wikimedia Portugal and the National Library of Portugal, with the support of meta:Wikimedia CH organized the Glam Days '18 event, with the objective of promoting GLAM initiatives and projects among GLAM institutions of Lisbon, inspired both by the example of the National Library GLAM, and by Glam Wiki Tel Aviv 2018, which was participated by three members of the local chapter.
The first day consisted on a series of workshops and an hackaton on Wikidata, presenting and explaining Wikidata and Wikibase to an audience of librarians and archivists, with a focus on the potential uses and benefits to libraries and archives. It included an hackaton adding items to Wikidata, and a basic workshop on SPARQL. The reception was very good, with all participants showing a native skill on Wikidata editing and a perfect understanding of the project, demonstrating again the strong correlation between libraries and Wikidata.
In the second day we started with an introduction to the various Wikimedia projects, followed by an extensive workshop on licensing and copyright in Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries, as well as Commons particularities relating to copyright, and concepts such as Freedom of Panorama, derivated work, De minimis and Threshold of Originality. In the afternoon we focused in GLAM projects and Wikidata. Paulo Perneta from WMPT and Miguel Mimoso Correia from the National Library explained what GLAM projects are, their advantages for the institutions taking part on them. Miguel spoke about his own experience in GLAM projects, including in the course of the Glam with the National Library and the impacts on the institutions he has been observing, mentioning, among others, the case of the National Library of Wales. Helena Patrício from the National library presented the semantic Web, linked data and Wikidata, and Paulo and Miguel spoke about Wikidata in the context of libraries.

State of the Glam
The National Library showed interest in installing Wikibase, as well as having a Wikipedian in Residence in the near future. New dumps of the database, including the BNP authorities database (above 1,7 million entries) and the online catalogue (1,2 million) have been generated and are now available at the OpenData BNP portal. We are working on them, matching the data using Mix'n'Match and OpenRefine and updating Wikidata. Some new sets of digitalized works are now prepared and ready to upload. We have been told by the National Library that the institution will make available for uploading to the Wikimedia projects the full resolution versions of part of the digitalized works. A new BNP Catalog ID property has been proposed, for the IDs of the full online catalogue of the National Library. Finally, on the course of the Glam Days a number of initiatives involving Universities and Wikidata have been planned to be launched in early 2019.

The Stockholm-based Nordic Museum, dedicated to Swedish ethnography and cultural history, has released another large batch of images under an open licence. That's how Wikimedia Commons came into possession of 8000 photographs of hats. There are some mittens and pants and whatnot thrown in for a good measure, but honestly, it's mostly just hats – very old and very pretty hats, covered in elegant embroidery. They come from different regions of Sweden, illustrating the colorful richness and diversity of our folk costume.

Martin Poulter has been working on a short animated video to explain the benefit of Wikidata for the University of Oxford's GLAMs. The first draft has been circulated and reviewed, and the latest version ought to be ready in January. Martin took part in ameeting with various Oxford museum staff and Simon Julier, a researcher specialising in virtual environments, to discuss possible projects using virtual reality and augmented reality.
The University have paid a temporary worker to extract data from a written catalogue of astrolabes, and most of this data set has now been reconciled to prepare it for import to Wikidata.
"Detailed depictions with IIIF, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons" is a blog post drawing attention to Wikidata's ability to make statements about specific areas of artworks. It identifies works in the Bodleian Library that could benefit from these rich descriptions.
Holiday gatherings and visit to Internet Archive

After the Wikicite conference that was held November 27-29 in Berkeley, California, more than a dozen attendees made a group visit to the Internet Archive to meet with Brewster Kahle and the IA staff. For the last few years, Wikimedia-Internet Archive collaboration has become more regular and coordinated, especially in the area of fixing broken links in references of Wikipedia articles. See "More than 9 million broken links on Wikipedia are now rescued", October 1, 2018, Mark Graham.
Andrew Lih, Mark Graham (IA) and Wendy Hanamura (IA) have worked to connect the two institutions at conferences like Wikimania and Wikiconference North America, so that now IABot is more integrated into the operation of Wikipedia editions in multiple languages. Work is now proceeding on archiving links in Wikidata, and IA and Wikimedians in the US are looking to do joint training for journalists and news organizations on effective use of Wikimedia and Internet Archive resources.
This visit was the culmination of lots of hard work to connect the two communities and increase collaboration.

Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons: first GLAM pilot projects announced

- The Belgian organization VIAA (staff members formerly working for Packed) will perform 2 or 3 example uploads of 'typical' GLAM collections to Wikimedia Commons with structured data - in any case probably one collection of a Belgian art museum and one collection of a city archive.
- There will be a Wikisource pilot, including digitized books in Punjabi, mentored by Satdeep Gill.
- Wikimedia España will upload sets of digitized maps and aerial photographs from the Spanish Instituto Geográfico Nacional with structured data on Commons.
- The Swedish National Heritage Board has started working on the project Wikimedia Commons Data Roundtripping. It researches and develops a prototype tool to return improved media metadata (translations, data additions etc.) back from Wikimedia Commons to the source institution. This project builds upon the new functionalities and APIs from Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons
More pilot projects, and more details, will be posted in the upcoming months. All the pilots will lead to new documentation for all Wikimedians and GLAM staff who want to do GLAM batch uploads with structured data on Wikimedia Commons.

Multilingual file captions on Wikimedia Commons are the first public feature of Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons. They are released around Thursday, 10 January 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files.
There is a help page for using captions on mediawiki.org (because captions are available for any MediaWiki user). Feel free to contribute to GLAM-related documentation for captions on Wikimedia Commons if a help page becomes available there as well.
