Wikipedia 15
To mark the 15th anniversary of the founding of Wikipedia (Wikipedia 15), Shared Knowledge held a series of events (see Wikipedia_15/Events/Skopje) in honour of this occasion. For the birthday party, you can read in this monthly report of our organization, while for activities related with cultural institutions in this report.
Explore Wikipedia seminar
The Explore Wikipedia seminar was held on the 16 January, one day after the birthday of Wikipedia, in the American Corner Skopje, small library and organization supported by the State Department of the USA, which is situated in National Library. This seminar was one of our activities related to the 15th birthday of Wikipedia and for a week we had an open call to all interested to learn more about Wikipedia.
Although we had an extremely cold and rainy/snowy day in Skopje, we held successfully this seminar and we had an eight participants. On this seminar we talk with the participants about Wikipedia in general, its vision and mission, we watch a documentary movie about Wikipedia Zero, presentation about Wikipedia, explaining the basics of editing to the people attending, presentation about licences and copyright, activities of Shared Knowledge and what is Wikimedia movement. Also, we explain them how it is possible to become an editor or member of our organization in future.
The Explore Wikipedia seminar was held by Kiril Simeonovski and Toni Ristovski.
American Corners Macedonia (article about corners in Macedonian) expressed an interest to generously host this kind of educational events in future. The participants received certificates for participation and were encouraged to take further interest in our activities.
Edit-a-thon in MANU Library
In accordance with the Memorandum od mutual cooperation between Shared Knowledge and the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, signed October 2015, under which the Wikimedian-in-residence at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU) in the person of Mario Šarevski (user Македонец) was introduced and established, the MANU Library has opened its book fund and facilities for organization of the first edit-a-thon in the month of the celebration of the 15th anniversary of Wikipedia.
This edit-a-thon was a part of a range of the activities to marking the 15th anniversary of the launch of Wikipedia and according to a prior preparations of the Wikimedian-in-residence at MANU and the employees at the Library it was scheduled to be held on January 22th. The event took place on Friday, January 22th, at the Library of MANU as a three-hour edit-a-thon dedicated to the topic Aegean Macedonia.
The edit-a-thon was attended by 3 Wikipedia users - editors, and it was also attended by 2 students in philology from Poland who are studying a semester on exchange in Macedonia and they have presented their excellent knowledge of the Macedonian language. With the support of the library staff from the rich scientific library book fund were provided 30 books on various topics and areas related to Aegean Macedonia such as settlements, geography, dialects and accents, historical events and personalities of the Ilinden Uprising, National Liberation War during WWII and the Greek Civil War of which on Wikipedia in Macedonian language were edited a total number of 18 articles of which 12 created and 6 significantly improved.
This was the first such event for editing Wikipedia in Macedonian language, which is held in the library of the Academy, that will continue to be open with its rich book fund for future editing Wikipedia articles with accurate, reliable and scientifically proven data, facts and information of all sciences and arts.
Open day at the Archives
As a part of global celebration of Wikipedia 15, in The State Archives of the Republic of Macedonia was organized "Open day at the Archives". Wikipedians and other guests had chance to see part of the work at DARM, as well some original documents from Macedonian history. All of them were part of panel discussion about Wikipedia. Wikipedian in residence at DARM spoke about the beginnings of Wikipedia in general, and about the beginnings of Macedonian Wikipedia. Lightening talk about the numbers of articles and needs for new editors. There was a little cocktail party for all Wikipedians and other guests. After the party, little group of Wikipedians attend the edit-a-thon, while the novices were introduced with the basic editing rules.
As an independent GLAMer, WiR at DARM started with her work at 4th of January 2016. Achievement in January was as this:
- 13 articles (created or improved)
- 202 uploaded files in total
- Used files in articles: 45 or 13.22% of all images of category
- Many meetings with GLAM employees, who were introduced with Wikimedia movement and with the needs of GLAM employees as editors
- Basic editing workshop with four employees.
