Memorandum of Cooperation between the National Heritage Institute and the Wikimedia Czech Republic
Memorandum of Cooperation between the National Heritage Institute and the Wikimedia Czech Republic
The Wikimedia Czech Republic cooperates closely with the National Heritage Institute of the Czech Republic since 2012. This cooperation includes the competition Wiki loves monuments, work on the lists of registered cultural monuments of the Czech Republic on Czech Wikipedia, training and lectures for the staff and students of the National Heritage Institute etc. Last month, this cooperation was confirmed by signing the Memorandum of mutual cooperation.
Museum Nights
Wikimedia Czech Republic once again actively participated in Museum Night. On June 13, we participated in the Prague Museum Night. In collaboration with the Czech National Library of Technology we provided information on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects to the visitors. We also wrote new articles on technical themes: architecture and car design.
A week later, we attended the Silesian Museum Night at the Silesian Museum in Opava for the fourth time. We created several new articles, the museum released texts and images under a free license. We have planned mutual activities for the next year with the top management of the museum.
Capturing public art with drones
DroneArt Helsinki!
Wikimedia Finland celebrated public art during the Nordic Open Data Week. Wikimedia Sweden paid a visit to Wikimedia Finland during the week, right in time to participate in the DroneArt Helsinki! -event.
The gathering for the photoshoot turned into a mini seminar with presentations about how to write in Wikipedia about public art, the Public art project by Wikimedia Sweden, and discussions about the Freedom of Panorama. Finland has FoP for buildings, but not for works of art.
We headed out in the wild windy weather equipped with a drone and an action camera with a long monopod to capture one or two works of art. After recording, we returned to workshop the results together. The numerous pictures were meticulously turned into a point cloud, and a 3D mesh model was created from that. There was an additional opportunity to 3D print that model in another linked event. Read the blog post about the event with more images.
The week was organized as a wide collaboration of actors across the Nordic countries.
Hack4NO
Wikimedia Finland also participated in another Nordic Open Data Week event in Norway. The maps hackathon #Hack4NO was organized by Kartverket, the national mapping agency of Norway. During the event, two maps mass uploads were prepared, one of which is still pending. The Senate Atlas from the National Archives of Finland, created by the Russian Military Topographic Department in the turn of the 20th Century were brought to Wikimedia Commons.
Freedom of Panorama
Wikimedia Finland also participates in the campaign to activate full Freedom of Panorama in Europe. Most of the Finnish MEPs have responded to our enquiry, and the majority are in favor of full FoP. The campaign page explains the question and records the MEPs' replies.
The Wikipedia Library
We are launching The Wikipedia Library in Finnish Wikipedia as Wikipedian Lähdekirjasto. So far we have established the basic sites and have gathered volunteers. At the moments six wikipedians are interested to participate as coordinators, however, we still have to share responsibilities. We also already have one interested donator, so once we have all the basic sites properly functioning, we can easily move to getting donations.
Surfing on GLAMs' agenda
When tradition meets modernity
Manuel Moreau from the Brittany museum, interviewed by Léa Lacroix last April, had not lied to us: for the last workshop of the year, the Rennes Wikipedians took advantage of the exhibition of photographs by Charles Fréger (Bretonnes, i.e. "Women of Brittany") to tackle the Wikipedia pages devoted to traditional headdresses worn by the Breton women. At the Champs Libres library, they were able to match their contributions with themes from the Brittany museum's current activities ... and reconcile tradition and modernity!
Last stop, all change!
On June 20th, some Wikipedians met at the MAC / VAL (the museum of Contemporary Art of Val-de-Marne) around the exhibition dedicated to the " Grand Paris Express " , a large public transportation project around Paris . In addition to editing on the exhibition's topics (public art, contemporary art, public transportation routes, territories crossed), the Wikipedians informed the visitors who wanted to discover the Wikimedia projects.
"I've got Wikimedia under my skin"
Following the edit-a-thon at the quai Branly museum in March Pierre-Yves Belfils, in charge of periodic and digital collections and working in the library of the museum, invited editors for a workshop related to the exhibition "Tattooists, Tattooed" (Tatoueurs, tatoués). They were given a guided tour and benefited from an access to bibliographical sources previously identified by our partner. Fifty photos have already been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. We hope to continue this type of workshop for other exhibitions at the quai Branly museum.
Launch of the "Bibliothèque Wikipédia"
Following the lead of the English-speaking Wikipedians who launched in 2013 "The Wikipedia Library" project, Francophones from the movement did not stay long on the bench! Sylvain Machefert, Benoît Rochon et Mohammed Bachounda launched a few weeks ago the French-speaking branch of the WP Library. The objective of this project is to provide the best working conditions for Wikipedians, facilitating their access to quality sources. Several solutions have been implemented, such as free accounts to access usually paying online databases ... that today represent thousands of resources made available to any Wikimedian who's been registered for 6 months or more, and who's made at least 500 edits on Wikimedia projects.
Wikidata & artworks: a winning team
Initiated by Shonagon and encouraged by the enthusiasm of about ten editors, a workshop on Wikidata and visual arts was held in the "espace Cléry" (i.e. at Wikimedia France's office). They discussed about their current achievements, tools, practices, perspectives ... and anything which could boost this brand new project!
Open GLAM - How to create true participation
Discussion panel "ABC of Free Knowledge" on Open Culture and participation
On June 25, Tim Renner, Berlins Secretary of State for Culture, Prof. Dr. Johannes Vogel, General Director of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, and Dr. Paula Marie Hildebrandt artist and urbanist, discussed, how cultural institutions and cultural policy can foster broad participation in the field of open culture at the discussion panel "Das ABC des Freien Wissens".

"KulTour" - GLAM on Tour´s little sister
Volunteers love GLAM institutions and back stage tours, that is known. But the fact is not easy to communicate to GLAM institutions. How do you easily call the product? GLAM on Tour has become quite known among the institutions as a standard event in Germany. But due to its size - normally a 3 days event with a challenging schedule - might be to big to suit everyone. Thanks to Geolina GLAM on Tour's little sister has now a name: KulTour. The word combines Kultur - German for culture - and Tour. And the first KulTour was held in June. Cromford, stands for early textile industry and is a museum too near Düsseldorf. Chapeau! - an exhibition on headdress. 15 Wikipedians met to shoot the hat. Beautiful images on hats from the early 19th century up to our days. Look at the results and use them for more articles on hats in Wikipedia. Next Kultours are on the way.
OpenGLAM working group Germany started
The quite young German Open GLAM group got started. On June 18, a full-day workshop for cultural institutions was held at Wikimedia Germany. 20 participants from various institutions gathered and shared their worries and hopes concerning open data as a sustainable parts of the workshop. It helps us GLAM activists in better understanding the institutions. In a worldcafé the participants worked on 4 different topic such as licenses, technical aspects on metadata, arguments for open culture and thoughts on sustainability. In the end we presented the results of the workgroups. Information on the workshop, the members of the OpenGLAM working group Germany and events around OpenGLAM can be found on the OpenGLAM-Wiki pages.

From Italian Parliament to libraries and Company Museums. And a Training Day too!
Italian Parliament BarCamp
On June 22nd, a group of Wikimedia Italia, Wikipedia Italian community and Wikimania Esino Lario Commitee representatives was receveid at Montecitorio Palace, seat of the Italian Chamber of Deputies. The BarCamp, organized by Innovation Intergroup and lasted for 4 hours of intense debate, was the occasion to present next Wikimania edition in Italy, and later focused on copyright and the absence of Freedom of Panorama in Italian law. Undersecretary of Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities Francesca Barracciu dimonstrated great interest and openness regarding to issued raised from Wiki Loves Monuments Italian edition and willingness to simplify bureaucratic procedures around it.
A complete video and a gallery of images of the event are available.
Wikimedia Italia and Company Museums Association Museimpresa
After ICOM Italia Agreement in March, Wikimedia Italia carries on its work to reach Italian museums. In this month, we've been invited to join the annual Museimpresa meeting in the prestigious Pirelli Foundation in Milan.
Museimpresa is the national association of company museums and archives, an important, but not so well known, part of Italian cultural heritage. Industrial and manufacturing history are documented in the rich collections held by these institutions, ranging from historical food brands (such as Barilla pasta and Peroni beer), to design (Alessi, Guzzini, Kartell), fashion (Ferragamo, Ermenegildo Zegna and Rossimoda Shoes Museum, wich hosted Europeana Fashion Editathon in 2013), automotive (Alfa Romeo, Ducati, Ferrari, Piaggio, Pirelli) and many others.
GLAM-wiki projects have been described with special attention to the particular situation of this kind of institutions, where copyright and brand image issues can overlap and not only cultural but economic strong interests too are at stake.
Wiki Loves Monuments and OpenStreetMap Training Day
On June 6th, in Bologna, Wikimedia Italia hosted a training day for photographers. The goal of the day was to inform about Wiki Loves Monuments and encourage professional photographers in participating, either with pictures or as jury members.
The room was full and the topics covered ranged from licenses, to legislation about (the absence of) freedom of panorama, up to more technical ones: what makes a good picture for a Wikimedia project? What makes it good for a photographer? Color versus black-and-white, HDR and perspective were quite popular topics in the discussions. The contribution of the Italian Federation of Photographic Associations (FIAF), partner with Wikimedia Italia in Wiki Loves Monuments, helped in bringing many photo enthusiasts to the event.
Besides the photo contest, there were a session on OpenStreetMap and one about the mapping of sites of interests in the Emilia-Romagna region by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage. That last project (Patrimonio culturale dell'Emilia-Romagna) was developed in the aftermath of the recent earthquake in the region, to help in preserving historical buildings damaged by the event. The attendees liked it very much, and the goal tof having pictures and geospatial data about historical buildings was much appreciated by both wikimedians and photographers.
After the sessions, there was a practical mapping session in the city center.

WikiManuzio project with Venice libraries
WikiManuzio is the new Venice libraries project focused on 15th century printer and publisher Aldo Manuzio. After a first step with Venetian libraries working with Promovetro local Consortium on Murano glass (see, for instance, some historical images from the archive and the gallery dedicated to glass tecniques), the collaboration with Wikimedia Italia continues with this new project. It celebrates, 500 years after his birth, Manuzio's fundamental work in publishing, on the background of a major initiative undertaken by Venice local administration.
A firt result of the work is the complete list of Aldine editions on Italian Wikipedia, based on reliable and multiple reference works, coompiled by professionals working directly on this issue thanks to the collections they hold.
BEIC Digital Library
In June, after an entire year of work, the BEIC project reached the number of 5.500 usages of 800 images from BEIC collection, of which 400 uploaded this month; over 160 articles were created on the Italian Wikipedia. Details are available via GLAMorous tool and on the monthly report in Italian.
The project page is partially been rewritten in order to better communicate its general sense to Italian librarians and further stimulate their growing interest in participation in wiki projects. In fact, BEIC is going to be an extremely relevant case study for Italian libraries and cultural institutions.
AIB Campania project
A workshop on the project promoted by the Campania Region section of National Association of Libraries (AIB), in collaboration with Wikimedia Italia, was held on Friday June 26 at the Biblioteca Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele III in Naples, in the beautiful Sala Rari.
The morning session talks focused on projects involving Italian libraries, in particular BEIC and ICCU, and the first achievements of the Campania project. In addition, two case studies were presented. The first, on the experience of information literacy on wiki projects in collaboration with secondary schools of the Potenza province. The second case showed an experience of collaborative writing of Wikipedia articles at the University of Salerno and their practical application in the contest of library collection weeding. In the afternoon, participants experienced an edit-a-thon session.
Open Jerusalem project
Wikimedia Italia took part at the Open Jerusalem Project's International Conference "Archiving a City. The Future of Jerusalem Past", on June 25 and 26. Open Jerusalem is a project focused on research on archives and documents regarding all demographic segments of Jerusalem, with the objective of producing a connected history of Jerusalem and its citizens from 1840 to 1940. All documentation and findings is scheduled to be digitised and released in an open format.
Wikipedian in residence
The Macedonian team at Shared Knowledge introduced its first Wikimedian-in-Residence at the National Archives of Macedonia. Memorandum of collaboration was signed on 15th June 2015. This collaboration was announced in several newspapers: "Wikimedian-in-Residence will make Macedonia's archival treasures public"
Photo on the link, from left: Wikimedian-in-Residence Cvetko Nedelkovski, Executive Committee Chair of Shared Knowledge, also GLAM coordinator Snezhana Shtrkovska and Director of the Archives Filip Petrovski.
Regular day in the Archives
The very next day Wikimedian-in-Residence started with his work. In the National Archives, he has room, desk and space to work, also has help from Archives employee who provides him with the documents, photos and materials. Much more, one woman employee is educated how to edit on Wikipedia, thanks to the project WikiWomen in Macedonia. She is a big help to our Wikipedian also. As we agreed with the Director, first article which has to be improved was the article about the National Archives.
After three weeks, Wikipedia has at least 20 new articles, several improved and at least 20 historical documents uploaded. Some of the documents are dating from 1903 (document about burned villages in Macedonia),, document from the Second World War, etc.
Historical images of Dutch water works
Historical images of Dutch water works
The Dutch Nationaal Archief - one of the hosts of the GLAM-WIKI 2015 conference - has started uploading a series of public domain images from the archives of the Dutch Rijkswaterstaat to Wikimedia Commons. According to its mission statement, Rijkswaterstaat is "the national agency that provides dry feet, clean and sufficient water and a quick and safe flow of traffic" The images mainly depict (sometimes historical) waterways, locks and bridges in the Netherlands.
See https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Rijkswaterstaat
Maritime Sweden
Maritime images and links
The Swedish National Maritime Museum and Wikimedia Sweden had signed an agreement to work more together. During the summer curators at the Maritime Museum will select at least 500 images to be released and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. The cooperation also consists of improving both quality and the number of authority links between Wikidata and Kulturnav. Also included is a workshop/edit-a-thon to get new staff members to edit different wikimedia projects.
Requests for specific images, collections or sets are more then welcome under the requests section at the cooperation page.
Royal Society of Chemistry; Thinktank; Oxford
Royal Society of Chemistry
Andy Mabbett's residency at the Royal Society of Chemistry is ongoing.
A further 12 RSC staff were trained to edit Wikipedia. Work was undertaken on mapping freebase properties to Wikidata properties, as part of the planned Freebase import. Andy spoke to 50+ early-career researchers at iD2 conference.
See the project diary and the blog (aimed at non-Wikipedians) for other news.
Thinktank
Andy Mabbett's work as Wikimedian in Residence at Thinktank Museum in Birmingham was extended into June, during which time he held a further training session for museum staff. For more details, see the Thinktank project diary.
Oxford
Martin Poulter has begun uploading content from the Bodleian Libraries, on the varied themes of 18th/19th century Burma, women in the prison system, Buddhism, Egyptian hieroglyphs, the army of the Roman Empire, Demonology in Islam, Indian gods, and 19th century entertainers. Files appear at commons:Category:Files_uploaded_by_the_Bodleian_Libraries'_Wikimedian_In_Residence and I hope other editors find these useful in improving articles in their own languages.
Upcoming events in Oxford include a training workshop for staff from the Vatican Library, a workshop for staff from Museums Oxford, and a session on "Using pedantry for peaceful ends" at a library staff conference.
Other news
Andy Mabbett gave a talk, "Wikidata for Mappers", at "State of the Map US", a conference for our OpenStreetMap colleagues, at the United Nations headquarters in New York. A video of the talk is on YouTube. He was pleased to meet NY chapter colleagues socially, while there.

Europeana 1914-1918
Europeana is pleased to announce that there are now ~800 new items on Commons that have been imported from the Europeana 1914-1918 project relating to the centenary of World War I. This diverse and beautiful collection of files have been "hand picked" from the much larger crowdsourced-digitisation project to ensure both encyclopaedic quality and free-license compatibility. Because these items come from private collections, the accompanying descriptions are in one of 10 European languages and detail personal account of the objects' original owner.
You can see the complete set of files on Wikimedia Commons:The upload was announced on the Europeana blog at the end of June, but has been a long time in planning - the initial upload was of 60 items in 2012!
There are many groups of military-sepecific items. For example:
-
lots of munitions and trench art
-
Certificates and forms
-
Lots of hat and lapel badges
-
pieces of uniform items
-
medals and commemorative items
....and many can be used to illustrate general interest topic articles. For example,
Your help is requested to better categorise these images and to start using them in the different Wikipedia languages. If you do find a good new use for an image, add it to the 'suggested articles' column in the project page to make it easier for other people to know where the image might be used on their language wikipedia!
Wikipedia is an amplifier of open access; 20,000 media files uploaded from PubMed Central
Paper on interaction of open access and Wikimedia
A paper entitled "Amplifying the Impact of Open Access: Wikipedia and the Diffusion of Science" was posted on arXiv. It concluded "that the chief effect of open access policies may be to significantly amplify the diffusion of science, through an intermediary like Wikipedia, to a broad public audience" and generated quite some discussion around the interaction of open access and Wikimedia.
Wikimania sessions
The session proposal on the Wikimedia Foundation's new Open Access policy finally did not make it into the program, which leaves Wikimania 2015 with two sessions related to Open Access:
There will also be a related one on use of DOIs across Wikimedia projects.
Wikipedia Science Conferences
Two conferences on the interplay between scholarly research and Wikimedia will take place later this year:
- the Wikipedia Science Conference from September 2-3 in London, UK, with two satellite hackathons (one in Cambridge on September 4, the other in London on September 5)
- a one-day conference on November 23 in Amsterdam as a satellite event to the award ceremony for the Erasmus Prize 2015, which went to the Wikipedia community
Recent uploads: Hearing hands write; brain-to-text decoding; 20,000 multimedia files
The following represents a selection of the files that have been uploaded this month from open-access sources. Most of these came from PubMed Central through the Open Access Media Importer, whose uploads now total over 20,000. If you can think of wiki pages where these files (or other files from the same source articles) could be useful, please put them in there or let us know.
