The Wikimedia community newsletter This Month in GLAM is published since January 2011. Since the February edition, we used a simple logo with the Wikimedia sign and name of the newsletter in a grey box. The GLAM portal got a new design in 2013, and now finally after five years also the newsletter logo has been changed in line with the GLAM-WIKI logo.

Since 2009 there is also a GLAM logo. When revising the This Month in GLAM logo, it was noticed that the GLAM logo is not representing the full GLAM area of galleries, libraries, archives and museums, but is only depicting pieces of art. GLAM is more than just art, so we gave it a thought, and replaced the L, A and M by an iconic representation of a library (book shelves), an archive (old document) and a museum (a museum front with the shape of the classical museum logo).

In this way we do more justice to the enormous diversity of GLAM institutions and projects.

In the past years the number of Wikimedia affiliates has grown rapidly, in existing affiliates many staff and board changes have taken place, and many people joined our movement. Many of the new people worldwide haven't heard about the inspiration they can find in the GLAM newsletter, where best practices, ideas and practicalities are shared. To promote the idea of sharing experiences more, we have been creating a flyer to hand out to the many Wikimedians to come to Wikimania, the Wikimedia Conference, and other conferences and meetups. If you know the newsletter already, please share the flyer with others to have a wider reach.

Museums workers experiencing Wikidata power

Collaboration with Silva Kaputikyan House Museum

In June Armine Aghayan started collaboration with the House Museum of Armenian poetress Silva Kaputikyan. The museum is an affilliate of Charents Museum of Literature and Arts. The museum does not have online database. Using the catalogues we created wikiidata data for some of museum artifacs: personal belongings of Kaputikyan, paintings, sculptures, photographs and so on. The first results encouraged the museum workers to start editing in Wikipedia. The collaboratin is ongoing and further we plan to present to wikipedia projects the hertage of all Armenian poetress.

Wikipedia and History was the theme of the Making Public Histories seminar held at the Old Treasury Building, Melbourne on Tuesday 12 June 2018. Pru Mitchell chaired a panel of researchers whose work on making public histories includes Wikipedia.

Dr Mary Tomsic, The University of Melbourne spoke to the topic that Who writes public history matters, and why they write, matters. Dr Tomsic discussed the motivation and goals of the university’s ResearcHERs Wikipedia edit-a-thon and ongoing editing community of practice focussed on social and cultural diversity. Her message was that: "As people who care about history we have an obligation to be active in the well-used popular public space of Wikipedia."

Justine Clarke is a co-founder of Parlour; women, equity, architecture. She spoke about how the Parlour team took on Wikipedia in their advocacy work on women, equity and architecture in Australia. Their WikiD project has made major contributions including their set of Wikipedia editing guides and the 70 (and growing) articles on Australian women architects categorised at Category:Women_architects_by_nationality.

Associate Professor Murray Phillips from The University Queensland reported on the digital research project, Creating Histories of the Australian Paralympic Movement which uses Wikipedia as a platform. The presentation celebrated the 987 Wikipedia articles have been created as part of this project, and outlined how Wikipedia is employed as a part of a larger, integrated history making venture. While the project demonstrates our capacity to bring together individuals, institutions and promote an understanding of diversity through disability, he acknowledged that the cultural practices of Wikipedia raise some challenges for historians. Following the presentations there was a sustained discussion between panellists and the audience, which was made up of both experienced local Wikipedian community members and public historians.

The final two GLAM Peak regional Digital Access to Collections workshops were held in June.

Caddie Brain was the Wikimedia Australia presenter at the Alice Springs workshop held at the Araluen Arts Centre. Gideon Digby presented at the final workshop held at the Heritage Centre in Broome, Western Australia.


A GLAMWiki on the Belgian Heritage in Brazil

Brazilian Wikimedians and the web portal Patrimônio Belga no Brasil (Belgian Heritage in Brazil) have launched a new GLAMWiki on the influence of Belgian individuals and companies in Brazil. The web portal was founded by Marc Storms, who is now involved in coordinating the GLAMWiki initiative along with Brazilian Wikimedians, particularly Hermógenes Teixeira Pinto Filho and Joalpe.

Patrimônio Belga no Brasil defines itself as an "inventory of the Belgian heritage in Brazil". It was launched in 2014 and received in 2017 an award from the Belgian Foreign Ministry for the description of the Vila Belga in the city of Santa Maria. Its main objective is to give visibility and preserve the Belgian influence in Brazil.

A landing on-wiki project page was set up, here. It is still under development and will provide a context and updates on the GLAMWiki. It also lists content to be improved on Wikipedia and Wikidata associated to this initiative.

Activities associated to this initiative include the upload to Commons of thousands of images on the Belgian influence in Brazil, including artwork, historical photographs and archives. They also include improving content on notorious individuals and companies who have played a role in the context of the historical Belgium-Brazil relationship.

First steps

At this point, an official ratification has been published on the web portal Patrimônio Belga no Brasil, as the initiative rests upon content relicensing. A request for OTRS validation has been filed, to be included on a specific license for the project (here).

The goal is to have this GLAMWiki project connected to outreach activities, including edit-a-thons with the Belgian community or diplomatic instances in Brazil. Ideally, activities can be set up in parallel with Wikimedians from Belgium; a first discussion on setting up cross-community activities in the context of this GLAMWiki initiative will possibly take place in Wikimania.

The GLAMWiki project with Patrimônio Belga no Brasil is to some extent a spin-off of the undergoing initiative with Museu Paulista. Wikimedians involved in the Museu Paulista initiative have uploaded a full set of artwork from Belgian painter Adrien Henri Vital van Emelen, one of the most important collections in this museum, and as references for the paintings were being looked for a contact with Marc Storms, from Patrimônio Belga no Brasil, was established and a new project was launched.

The Wikimedia Commons category of this GLAM initiative is Category:Patrimônio belga no Brasil. A set of images --sculptures from Adrien van Emelen-- was uploaded as OTRS validation was being processed.

While some were watching football, 11 editors held an edit-a-thon in Toulouse during the Journées nationales de l'archéologie (Archaeology national day). The result: 50 articles were created or improved and 229 images imported on Commons.

Prior to the workshop, cultural institutions had selected images illustrating local archaeology from their collections and uploaded them on Wikimedia Commons.

A great opportunity to gather scattered collections and make them known to the public by using them to illustrate Wikipedia articles.

INHA

We recently met the INHA (Institut National d'Histoire de l'art) which owns thousands of documents and HD views, mainly iconographic collections and manuscripts documents. As the collection is online yet, the interest for the INHA is to indentify and help in content and data management. We've spoken about training on Wikimedia project for the last quarter.

We also discussed with the "PBA de Lille" about opportunities around their plan-relief collection. These 15 plan-reliefs are undergoing a restoration phase until march 2019. This is the opportunity to enrich Wikipedia articles, document restoration with photos and videos and upload photos of plan-reliefs once restored.

From Eastern Indonesia on Commons

Introducing open license & digitization at Dr. H.C. Oemboe Hina Kapita Museum, local museum in East Sumba

In Indonesia, The Law of Cultural Advancement No.5/2017 serves as a mandate to the government to improve public policy for the cultural sector. The law has become a tool to drive a healthy arts ecosystem, including the management of cultural institution like a museum. Therefore, this is a breakthrough to conduct file-sharing activity in a museum in Indonesia within the framework of GLAM-Wiki.

Wikimedia Indonesia in cooperation with Indonesian Arts Coalition, a cultural policy and arts advocacy organization, organized a digitization activity at Dr. H.C. Oemboe Hina Kapita Museum, Waingapu, East Nusa Tenggara. On this occasion, Wikimedia Indonesia introduced how Wikimedia Commons and Creative Commons license could be used as the medium of knowledge dissemination in their collections.

The two-day event (30–31 May 2018) was divided into presentation and digitization sessions. On the first day, Indonesia Art Coalition shared about the change of the arts ecosystem in the digital era and the importance of cultural data, as stipulated in Law on Cultural Advancement. Further, Wikimedia Indonesia explained how to use Creative Commons and various types of license. Several cultural practitioners alongside with the local government from Office of Culture and Tourism Agency and Public Library and Archive were seen to come. The proposed audience at this event was the museum staffs, therefore they could conduct a better knowledge management through the museum collections, including weft ikat, pieces of jewelry and ritual types of equipment.

Ceramic plates, believed to be linked to the Chinese, are the type of collection that had been successfully digitized and stored on Wikimedia Commons on the second day. We had uploaded eight plates, and this amount had increased to 18 objects a week after the event took place.

Majalah Kajawen

Meanwhile, Wikimedia Indonesia and Yayasan Sastra Lestari, a local archive institution in Surakarta, Central Java, established a project to digitize Majalah Kajawen, a local magazine published in Indonesia. This collaboration has been started since June 2017 until now. This project aimed to preserve physical printed magazines from the archive to digital formats. The institution has already started their own effort to transliterate the magazines, which was written in Javanese characters, into Latin characters since 1997.

This project, in the first place, was to digitize all editions of Majalah Kajawen from the collection of Yayasan Sastra Lestari. They have been archiving the magazines, published from the year 1927 to 1941. The institution has been transcribing the magazines and published their work on their website, which can be accessed freely. However, according to the Chief of Yayasan, they still lack of infrastructure to digitize the magazines and keep them in the digital format. Wikimedia Indonesia, via Content Digitization project, granted a DIY book scanner to the institution, aiding them to scan and provide TIFF images of the Majalah Kajawen as the result of the scan.

Until the end of June 2018, Wikimedia Indonesia has successfully uploaded 170 numbers of Majalah Kajawen collections to Wikimedia Commons. This result can be by people, who are fond of Javanese cultures, stories, and other information in it. Several editions have been transcribed in Javanese Wikisource; some of the work can be seen here.

On the 16th and the 17th of June a Wiki Weekend was held in Trentino, northern Italy. Two events, both consisting in a guided tour and an edit-a-thon were organised by Trentino-Alto Adige Wiki, with the contribution of Wikimedia Italia through a microgrant.

On Saturday wikipedians did a guided tour of three churches in Trento (Santa Maria Maggiore, San Francesco Saverio and the Cathedral) and then edited/created articles about the churches, artists that had worked in them and works of art there are hosted. The event was organised in cooperation with Museo Diocesano Tridentino, that offered the guided tour and hosted the edit-a-thon. Six new articles were created, including Vicenzo and his nephew Gian Girolamo Grandi, 16th century sculptors, who created a beautiful choir in Santa Maria Maggiore.

On Sunday wikipedians visited the exhibition Imago Animi - Faces from the past hosted by Palazzo Assessorile in Cles, Non Valley. The multidisciplinary exhibition focused on the human face, with elements of archaeology, anthropology, etc. The event was organised in cooperation with Arc-Team, that had curated the exhibition and offered the tour. The edit-a-thon was hosted by Cles Public Library. Among the results the English article Facial motion capture was translated to Italian.

Overall 14 people participated, including two new users and two non-expert users, 8 articles were created, 12 articles were improved and 73 images were uploaded on Wikimedia Commons. Next event in Trentino will be on the 28th of July in Bersntol!

Fortezza delle Verrucole editathon

From 31th may until 3rd june held a editathon in San Romano di Garfagnana, in Tuscany, Italy. Thank to Wikimedia Foundation grant we could retire for 3 days to edit articles about Fortezza delle Verrucole. We chose this place because the picture taken this Castle won the Wiki loves monuments Toscana 2017 and another picture of the castle has reached the 3th place in national contest and 5th in worldwide contest.

The Municipality of San Romano di Garfagnana supported us providing a room in the public library only for us. On Friday we visited the a flour manufacturer on Saturday a trout breeding. Later we went to a small town called Orzaglia to watch the a match of Tiro della forma (cheese wheels throw). In these excursions we took pictures for Commons.

Finally, after editing about 2 days, on Sunday we visit the Fortezza delle Verrucole with a guide dressed in medieval clothes at the end we attend a show of catapult shot.

In the library set up the exhibition with final pictures in WLM Toscana 2016 and 2017 from 1th june until 15th.

The 11 participants are create 7 new articles in 3 different language wikipedias, 3 articles improved, a new article on wikivoyage, 29 new categories on Wikimedia Commons with more 100 pictures uploaded, 4 elements improved on Wikidata and 34km of roads added on OpenStreetMap.

On 4th of June 2018 we held Wiki Tour in the City Library "Braka Miladinovci" in Skopje. This is due to good collaboration between GLAM Macedonia and the City Library. The Wiki Tour was organized by Wikipedian in Residence in the Library. Wiki Club members from the secondary school in Dracevo were participants on the Wiki Tour. They were introduced to the library's facilities, to the ways on how to use the professional literature, as well as to the reading rooms and attractive programs organized by the Library. The Wikipedians were allowed to see the bookbinder room, where many of the used books are replenished. А special interest aroused the meeting with the employees in the periodical department.

The Wikipedians were introduced to the rich collection of daily, weekly and monthly newspapers and magazines. They were introduced with the first issues of the newspapers published on the territory of Macedonia. Motivated by detailed explanations from their host on the meeting, Valentina Malic-Andonovska, the Wikipedians offered a new type of cooperation: searching for texts in the magazines and newspapers, and to create articles on Macedonian Wikipedia out of the texts. The library also showed interest in such future cooperation.

In memorial of the Great War, WWI, Wikipedian in Residence at the City Library "Braka Miladinovci" in Skopje organized editing days for members of GLAM Macedonia, on 10–13 June 2018. Twelve Wikipedians created 21 new articles, and 25 existing articles were improved. On the same subject, Wikipedian in Residence at the City Library "Braka Miladinovci" in Skopje organized edit-a-thon in April. Twelve Wikipedians and 8 members of the Wiki Club Staro Nagorichane participated. During the weekend, 15 new articles were created, and six existing articles were improved.

Altogether with other activities of GLAM Macedonia members, in the first half of the year 2018, 51 new articles were created on the subject of World War I, 32 existing articles were improved and more than 300 new references were added to the articles on the Macedonian Wikipedia. As there are still missing articles about the World War I on Macedonian Wikipedia, GLAM Macedonia members will continue to fulfill the subject gap in the next months.

After a notification in March and several meetings for preparations with the Swedish Embassy and the office of the United Nations for gender equality and straightening the woman's rights and position UN Women held in May and June, on 20th of June was held WikiGap Skopje edit-a-thon. Besides the main organizers the Embassy if Sweden in Skopje, UN Woman and Shared Knowledge as a Wikimedia chapter in Macedonia this event was also organized in partnership with dozen NGO's, civil associations, initiatives and institutes dedicated to woman's and human rights, gender studies, gender equality issues. The preparations went good with a constant e-mail communication for sharing ideas for articles and literature, which was provided by our employees from the Library of Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU), with which we have established successful GLAM partnership with memorandum of cooperation and Wikimedian-in-Residence since 2015, and printed from electronic materials in our possession, while some of the participants in the days prior the event have gathered information and prepared text of biographical content for female personalities from Macedonia who had impact in the social, cultural and public life. The main title of the event was "Prominent women from Macedonia" and the main focus was creating bibliographical articles about woman which are not visible on the internet space but nevertheless other articles on female and gender topics were also tackled and covered within the scope of this edit-a-thon. WikiGap edit-a-thon as a part of the a global Swedish initiative with the idea of bridging closer the differences and gender inequalities that persist in the online world held in Skopje had 54 participants who in a period of 4 hours (1 hour opening and instructional presentation and 3 hours of editing articles) have created 103 new articles on Wikipedia on Macedonian as well as they have contributed with uploading several images to Wikimedia Commons which was added to the articles and improving exiting articles on women topics.

On 11th June the national library of the Netherlands hosted a writing sprint – initiated by the National Platform Open Science - to add and improve articles related to open science on Dutch Wikipedia and Wikidata.

This was a second sprint in a series on open science and open access, the previous was on 23rd February at Utrecht University


A New Zealand Wikipedian at Large

In the first Project Grant awarded to New Zealand, Giantflightlessbirds will be a Wikipedian at Large from July 2018 to June 2019, travelling the country working with GLAM institutions and research organisations to improve their engagement of Wikimedia. Aotearoa New Zealand is an emerging community, with a well-educated population and good internet infrastructure, but it has lagged behind in its participation in Wikimedia, and there is no organised support network for new editors.

Dr Mike Dickison / Giantflightlessbirds was previously Curator of Natural History at Whanganui Regional Museum. He has been an enthusiastic advocate for Wikipedia in the New Zealand GLAM sector for some years, and has coordinated Wikipedia support for the Critter of the Week project, a collaboration between the Department of Conservation and Radio New Zealand. He will be based in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Nelson over the course of the year.

The Wikipedian at Large project page will be updated with institutions, tasks completed, public events, and media coverage. This month, Giantflightlessbirds is Wikipedian in Residence at Auckland Museum, which is the only New Zealand institution to previously host a Wikipedian. His projects include:

  • Working with the Pacific Island collections team to populate articles with photos and audio/video
  • Recording place name pronunciations by fluent speakers of Te Reo Māori to replace the incorrect ones currently used on New Zealand articles
  • Tidying up categorisation and linking of the recent mass-upload of Auckland Museum images in Commons
  • Running a Commons Wikiblitz to add the newly-photographed land vertebrate collection to Wikipedia
  • Identifying an Auckland Museum database suitable for Wikidata Mix'n'Match

All Russia under a free license

All Russia under a free license

The Institute of economics and management in industry located in Moscow, Russia, after some negotiations with representatives of Wikimedia RU sent an official confirmation, allowing to release the 'All Russia' encyclopedia published by the Institute under the free licence Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International. Thus, 'All Russia' became the first paper encyclopedia in Russia to be released under a free licence.

The encyclopedia has an alphabetic index of cities and localities in Russia. Specifically according to the introduction at the beginning of the encyclopedia, 1448 localities are included of the Russian Federation, including 1051 cities, 366 settlements, 25 villages, 5 stations, and one sloboda -- a large village or settlement, usually populated by non-serf (free) peasants -- Bolshaya Martynivka. The encyclopedia was first published in 2001.

According to the chairman of the editorial board of the encyclopedia Alexei Valeryevich Ryabinin, 'The encyclopedia 'All Russia', being a comprehensive scientific and encyclopedic publication of enduring value, also contains unique information that was collected and summarized at the end of the 1990s, into one of the complex and contradictory periods of the history of our country. I am sure that the encyclopedia will be interesting to specialists of various professions. We are very pleased to transfer this work to free use under the open license, and are ready to support in every possible way any initiatives aimed at improving people's access to knowledge. Competence, professionalism and creative approach to business are today the basis and the driving force of progress.'

The executive director of Wikimedia RU Stanislav Kozlovsky noted: 'The transfer of such a monumental and beautifully illustrated work to the terms of a free license is really a breakthrough. Now in Russia there are about 800 regional encyclopedias and encyclopedic reference books, but all of them are protected by copyright and even laying them out network and making it accessible to citizens is a crime. I hope very much that the transition of the encyclopedia 'All Russia' to the free license will show a positive example to publishers and other encyclopedias. Knowledge must be accessible to everyone!'

Over the years, the electronic layout of the encyclopaedia 'All Russia' was lost. We express our gratitude to the Central Universal Scientific Library for prompt scanning of the encyclopedia in high quality.

Contests and events

Stanislav Kozlovsky in Astrakhan

Open Library events were held in Astrakhan (ru) and Moscow (in Russian State Children's Library and Central Scientific Medical Library). As a part of the activities, there was continued to be popularized the Open Library (ru) competition (25.10.2017-30.06.2018) and were distributed legal and methodological materials for librarians about the publication of content under free licenses.

In the beginning of June Yakutsk has become a platform for Republican Forum of Young Librarians. This forum was visited by Vladimir Medeyko, Dmitri Zhukov and Nikolay Pavlov; among other things, Wikimedia RU organized in Yakutsk a public announcement about the transfer of the collection of translations of the national writer of Yakutia, Semen Rufov, to the public domain.

GLAM Seminar, WIR and GLAM/Edu camp

GLAM Seminar

Ministry of culture and information of Republic of Serbia and Wikimedia Serbia organized a three-day seminar for the representatives of archives, museums and libraries. The seminar represents continuation of cooperation with the Ministry of culture, which started last year. This time an advanced workshop was held, and cultural workers contributed to Serbian Wikipedia with new articles about Serbian cultural heritage. More than 40 people rated this seminar with the highest grades.


Wiki Camp in Trstenik

A three-day Wiki-camp was held in Trstenik, town in south Serbia, as part of the “Wiki Team Trstenik” project. This project is coordinated by the Museum in Trstenik, with the idea to form teams consisting of high school pupils, who will write articles about cultural heritage in this area. The museum will release more then 700 images by the end of the year.


Wikipedian in residence in the Museum of Yugoslavia

Wikipedian in residence in the Museum of Yugoslavia Marko Stanojevic during the month of June has uploaded more then 200 images and wrote 58 new articles in Serbian Wikipedia. From the beginning of his residence until now, Marko wrote 90 articles and uploaded 310 images released by the Museum. Museum of science and technology has joined the project as well, releasing images needed for the illustrations of some articles. The residence will end on July 13th.

In June we finalized the upload of more than 1,700 images from different Swedish expeditions with the Swedish ethnographer Erland Nordenskiöld. All those expeditions were in South America. We also included one expedition in Africa with Eric von Rosen and Robert Fries. This batch is part of a cooperation with the National Museums of World Culture. It is the the second batchupload in 2018 and the fourth in total that includes pictures from the National Museums of World Culture in Sweden. The Swedish Cordiller-Chaco Expedition was made in 1902-03 and went to Argentina and Bolivia, The Swedish Expedition in 1904-1905 was to Peru and Bolivia, The Hernmarck Expedition in 1908-1909 was again to Argentina and Bolivia, The Swedish Expedition to Bolivia was in 1913-1914, The Swedish Expedition to Panama and Colombia was in 1927. The Swedish Rhodesia-Congo Expedition was in 1911-1912.

The images depicts a wide variety of scenes and objects. Many of them contains the multitude of local and international people involved in the expeditions in everyday situations in South America and in Africa in the first half of the 20th century. Some of the photos could also be classified as "behind the scenes" shoots from the expeditions. Many of the images are unique and some of the places visited and some groups of people that the expeditions encountered had never been photographed before. An example is the Aikanã.

In general, a large number of the images are quite poorly described in regards to what the image actually depicts and would therefore need manual categorization and description. Help from the community would therefore be highly appreciated!

Swedish National Archives

At the end of 2017 the Swedish Government decided that all digital collections from the Swedish National Archives will be freely available. This means that we now have about 100 million pages of e.g. church books.

The following activities in Wikipedia has been initiated or will start soon:

Wikidata NAD property P5324

This Wikidata property contains the ID number of an archive at the Swedish National Archives. We will start connecting Parishes of the Church of Sweden with its archive d:Wikidata:Q615980 ==> that people interested in genealogy will have the possibilities to navigate the archives from a map of Sweden generated by Wikidata with links to the abt 2,500 archives that contains church books.

The vision is that we also should link personal archives, company archives and major evens like the en:1912_Summer_Olympics in Stockholm with objects in Wikidata. Together with the webhub tool we can see that Wikidata can be a hub connecting cultural information in Sweden in a new way (see below).

The Swedish National Archive is an old institution and in 2018 celibrated its 400 years anniversary. During those 400 years they have gathered about 30,000 km of archives shelves (pdf).

TORA - Topographical register at the Swedish National Archives

This week some people from Wikipedia in Sweden had our first meeting with the TORA project. The TORA project has expressed an interest to link to Wikidata and in Wikidata we have created a TORA property P4820. We are right now trying to understand how the Wikipedia community can add value to this project and we are also doing some data cleaning in Wikipedia before we will take the next step. The Tora project is defined as a Topographical register and is a linked data project concerning historical settlements in Sweden.

The current status is that TORA has about 30,000 spatial coordinates referring to settlement units such as villages, hamlets, single farms, manors and towns, have been excerpted on basis of the following source materials:

  1. Large-scale maps from the 17th century: In principle, all settlements in Sweden mapped by land surveyors during the 17th century are included in TORA.
  2. The illustrated topographical survey of Sweden – (Sweden past and present)
  3. Medieval written sources and cadastres (): All settlements in Sweden, documented in medieval written sources and later registers until c. 1570, are continually identified and described by the research group Det medeltida Sverige (Medieval Sweden) at Riksarkivet. Many of these have already been assigned to coordinates (see above). Those not found on 17th century maps have been assigned to coordinates using later maps. At present about 6,600 settlements units have been added (ongoing).
  4. Sources and reference books about manors: The database Sveriges herrgårdar (www.svenskaherrgardar.se) (Manors in Sweden) contains information about 3,500 manors in Sweden. Basically all have been matched with coordinates in TORA (ongoing).

Another interesting aspect of this is that also the National Library of Sweden - LIBRIS XL will have references to TORA ==> it will be possible to use references from TORA to find what books is related to a place.

LIBRIS XL - Bibframe 2.0 and open linked data

This month the Swedish Library released the first version of a new Library system that is based on Bibframe 2.0 and open linked data. How this will impact Wikipedia and Wikidata we will see but we are planning to do some activities together with the National Library. Project manager for the activities will be André Costa.


Wikidata at Oxford

There is a new project page on Wikidata documenting Martin Poulter's work as Wikimedian In Residence, sharing data on Wikidata and building Wikidata-driven applications to make the university's GLAM collections more discoverable. The main focus so far has been Asian art from the Ashmolean Museum, with some data also being added about Asian paintings and manuscripts in the Bodleian Library, and a small set of art works from the Pitt Rivers Museum. Numbers of items will be updated on the project page.

Here's an example of a Listeria list of works by an Asian artist with works in the Ashmolean. Some artists added to Wikidata in this activity include Tao Yiqing (wikidata:Q55204660), Wang Honghui (wikidata:Q55184764), Zhang Minjun (wikidata:Q55178853), Sun Xiaoyun (wikidata:Q55175445), Zhou Jingxin (wikidata:Q55175108), Li Guixin (wikidata:Q55172121), Mori Yūsen (wikidata:Q55171976), Shanshen Yang (wikidata:Q55171848), Yang Liuqiao (wikidata:Q55171714), Lou Bai'an (wikidata:Q55171592), and Yang Yanping (wikidata:Q55171437) .‎

Collection Explorer, the proof-of-concept application driven by the above data, is continuing to grow and is currently being user-tested with students.

Another aspect of the project is sharing data about the works of the 18th century Austrian illustrator Ferdinand Bauer. Oxford holds two and a half thousand artworks by Bauer from a 1786-88 expedition in the Mediterranean - mainly botanical illustrations, but also illustrations of fauna and landscape art. The artworks have scientific, bibliographic and geographical aspects so are ideal for representation in Wikidata. Recent work has involved representing the landscape drawings and botanical illustrations and connecting them to the modern identifiers for things they represent.

A third possible project is being discussed. This would share data about astrolabes, of which Oxford's Museum of the History of Science is thought to have the finest collection.

Post Scriptum, October 2018: Shanshen Yang and Yang Yanping have since been reconciled to Wikidata entries that already existed (wikidata:Q6778384 and wikidata:Q22159072 respectively).

There were several Wikipedia sessions on the program at the American Library Association Annual Meeting in June, including a Conversation Starter session where librarians from Montana State University, University of Illinois, UC Davis and OCLC spoke about how they are leveraging Wikipedia and Wikidata. There was also an editathon organized by the SRRT Feminist Task Force and an OCLC Booth presentation about the Wikipedia + Libraries project.

Poll to direct activities

User Group Poll

The WLUG steering committee ran a survey for the user group in order to help gauge interest in activities. The poll ran between May 24th and June 30th.

We received 84 responses. Results are in order of number of votes (people could choose multiple items). This helps us to see where the energy of the community is. The User Group steering committee will use these poll results to help plan our activities in the coming year.

  • 57 Engage with libraries in communities with historically low participation in Wikimedia projects
  • 53 Serve as ambassadors for the idea that Wikimedia work is business as usual in libraries by sharing case studies and communicating the benefits of engaging with Wikimedia

Structured Commons at Wikimania 2018

The GLAM team will attend Wikimania in Cape Town, with quite a few presentations and sessions that are related to the upcoming Structured Data on Commons. Join us!

Workflow for data and media partnerships, covered at Learning Days of Wikimania 2018.
  1. During Learning Days, there is a 90-minute session on structured data and Wikidata partnerships, highlighting the main elements in a workflow for such a partnership, common tips, and an overview of software tools that can help during such a project.
  2. Structured Data on Commons is a focus area of the Wikimania hackathon, where we will do some work on modelling files and will be brainstorming about the most important properties and metadata that should be part of structured Commons files.
  3. On Friday 20 July, several sessions about Commons and Structured Data take place as part of the main conference program. There is a session about the research that has been done about GLAMs' use of Wikimedia Commons, and a 90-minute block of general information about the project, together with a panel of projects that deal with knowledge equity on Wikimedia Commons, followed by a design discussion.

IRC office hour log

New community consultation: Properties for Commons

In July, there is a community consultation on Wikimedia Commons, which collects possible properties for media files that will contain structured data on Commons. People with a GLAM interest in this topic are very welcome to contribute.
