Summer is over

Summer is over fires, flooding, cyclones, and holidays are behind us, universities and schools return to the start of the new year.

Award Nominations

The collaborative work of Wikipedians and GLAM organistaions in Western Australia were announced as finalists in the State Heritage Awards. Freopedia a WikiTown project set in Fremantle was nominated for Outstanding interpretation project that enhances a place.[1] There is also a lesson here in the nomination of Freopedia its nice to be secretive and a pleasant surprise when finalists are announced remember when doing this ensure the correct usage of terms. Wikipedian and WikiTowns in Western Australia driving force Gideon Digby has also been announce as a finalist in Outstanding newcomer: The Professor David Dolan Award,[2] if there ever was a need to understand how valuable attending Wikimanias can be then one only needs to look at the transformative effect Gideon has had in Western Australia since attending Wikimania in 2012.

Toodyaypedia

The second WikiTown project in Western Australia is a collaborative effort between Wikimedia Australia and the Shire of Toodyay. On the 8th March Wikimedia Australia provided a bus to take a group of editors out to Toodyay to help progress the development of this project. The focus of the day was content first up we toured around the region familiarising ourselves with the layout during this tour we were taken into areas of the museums that arent accessible to the public. Connors Mill one of two museums in Toodyay became the first Australian museum to use qr coding and link every exhibit to available content enhancing the visitors experience, this is being followed up with Old Gaol Museum but there some content writing that needs to take place before it can be comprehensively covered. After lunch at Urwin's store we spent the afternoon in the Toodyay Public Library some editors worked one on one teaching new people, other focused on the article naming a very important factor to have right before QR coding.

GLAM ship; Open GLAM hackathon; Science 2.0 conference; GLAM meetup

GLAM ship

Preparations continued this month for the joint exhibit by Wikimedia Deutschland and the Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland on board of the exhibition ship MS Wissenschaft, which will tour German and Austrian rivers from May till September with a themed exhibition about the digital society. The OKF exhibit will feature open data about public transport in Berlin, while the Wikimedia one will invite visitors to explore Wikipedia articles geolocated along the route of the ship. Additionally, Wikimedia and OKF Germany are collaborating with Wikimedia and OKF Austria and the Austrian Science Fund to organize a panel discussion on Open Science while the ship is in Vienna in September.

Open GLAM hackathon

Wikimedia Deutschland is co-organizing a GLAM hackathon in Berlin, for which cultural institutions are liberating some of their data, and developers are invited to build apps, mashups, visualizations or other tools or services on top of that. Registration is open, the website is online. About a dozen GLAM institutions have already made data available for this purpose. The coders, game developers and designers meeting in Berlin in the end of April will have a lot of GLAM data to play with. There are still capacities for coders to join the quest. The four challenges they meet will reveal the rich sparkling of treasures from the depots of the participating museums and archives. Expect to read more about this next month.

Science 2.0 conference

From March 26-27, the Science 2.0 conference took place in Hamburg. Its focus was on how Web 2.0 tools and networks impact on the habits and workflows of researchers and was organized by the Leibniz research network Science 2.0, of which Wikimedia Germany is a member. A survey on the matter found that most researchers read wikis (presumably largely Wikipedia) on a regular basis, while only a few do actually contribute. Some, however, participated in a Wikimedia workshop that took place on the day prior to the conference. See also this more detailed report.

More volunteers focussing on GLAM-activities

Back in the times of fairy tales, a dog, a cat, a donkey and a rooster were heading towards Bremen to become musicians. Over the last weekend in March, almost 30 GLAMsters, a.k.a. volunteers active or interested in becoming active in GLAM-matters, gathered in Bremen to exchange their experiences and knowledge on how enhancing the cooperation in between GLAM institutions and volunteers from the Wikiverse. It was an amazing concert, read more in the blog post.

Even though these regular meetings of GLAMsters have increasing numbers of participants, we still found it could be more. And we feel an urge for more easily accessible information on how to do the GLAM thing. Quick finds how to argue to motivate GLAM institutions to open their mind to the spirit of free knowledge and free licenses. Easily reportable explanations to copyright issues. Knowing what event formats there are and which turnouts they might give. How to set up a project and how to get it funded. Having showcases at hand to illustrate the aim. … We would not be Wikimedians if not coming to the conclusion that all the information could be gathered and structured easily by composing a Do-it-Yourself-Handbook on Wikibooks. Please join us completing it, e.g. with links to information sites you consider helpful, translation won't be a problem.

New GLAM projects in Mexico and Reynosa's City Hall donation of historical photos

New GLAM projects in Mexico

In addition to the cultural partners related projects in the country, Wikimedia Mexico begin collaboration with Museo Soumaya, one of the most visited museums in Mexico and based on a relevant and contemporary designed building in the north of the capital. Other projects will be made with another long time supporters of the chapter as Centro de Cultura Digital, Museo Universitario del Chopo and Centro Cultural de España en México. With this last, the chapter is shaping a project about the Spanish Exile who will be held in the next months.

Reynosa's City Hall donation of historical photos

Reynosa is a border city of Mexico, located in the state of Tamaulipas, and neighbor of McAllen, Texas. The Reynosa's City Hall performs some Wikimedia events due to the 265 anniversary of the foundation of the city. First, during all March performs the "Wiki Reynosa" photo contest. On March 22 ran an edit-a-thon and then, in March 29 the city hall performs an official event of donation of historical photos of Reynosa to Wikimedia Commons from the City Hall archive.

Education; Libraries; Museums; Maps, Earth

Education Extension

The Education Program Extension has been installed on the Dutch Wikipedia. This extension can be used for all kinds of courses, varying from short event like edit-a-thons to longer courses. Several volunteers are currently writing documentation for future users of the extension and their specific roles (teacher, student, etc.).

Wiki loves Libraries

The Eemland library in Amersfoort wil host monthly Wikipedia training sessions for at least 6 months. Dick Bos, a local volunteer of Wikimedia Nederland, will act as trainer on location. This cooperation is a pilot. If the pilot is successful, Wikimedia Nederland will try to start up more long running training sessions with local volunteers in libraries.

Augmented Reality in Museums

Wikimedia Nederland had been granted funding for a project concerning augmented reality in museums. This project can be seen as a continuation of the AR project in Barcelona.

Wikipedians in Residence / Maps project

The Dutch Wikipedians in Residence (WiR's) have had their monthly meeting in March. The notes of this meeting are publicly available. The WiR's are cooperating in a project about maps.

Wiki loves Earth

A group of users have started with the preparations of Wiki Loves Earth in the Netherlands during the months May and June. Wiki Loves Earth in the Netherlands is focused on the national parks we work together with. We already plan activities in the national parks during the project.

Better coverage of Norwegian female photographers

Preus Museum is the national museum of photography in Norway. It is located in Magasin A at Karljohansvern in Horten. The Preus Museum exhibition program shows Norwegian and international photography and photographs, a combination of self-produced and borrowed exhibitions of national and international origin. Take a look at parts of their collection on Wikimedia Commons.

At the 26th of March our monthly GLAM edit-a-thon took place at Preus museum. We started off the edit-a-thon with a guided tour in one of the current exhibitions displaying the History of photography. The goal for the edit-a-thon was to write and improve articles about female photographers, Marie Høeg being one of them. With a group of 17 enthusiastic writers, both new beginners and experienced wikipedians, we managed to add both new articles and pictures to Wikimedia Commons.

Many ways to meet Wikipedia

Digikult

The end of March saw the second instalment of Digikult, a conference dedicated to "digital cultural heritage - in practice". It was organised by Wikimedia Sverige and a number of cultural heritage institutions in Sweden, including the National Archives and the City Museum of Gothenburg. The number of attendees were around 120 (the tickets sold out early). The topics in the talks were among many others copyright, mass digitisation, how to digitise music and television, Wiki Loves Monuments and other Wikimedia GLAM cooperations, Europeana, open access, a national guideline for digitisation and authority data. All talks were filmed, and they will be uploaded under a free licence to YouTube soon. For more information, see http://digikult.se.

Last year's Digikult was very popular, and this year's conference was well received. Several of the top GLAM institutions in Sweden attended. Wikimedia Sverige board member, Kristina Berg, was the moderator for the conference.

Meet Wikipedia

Starting March 11 and until April 16 Wikimedia Sweden are running an open office at The National Centre for Architecture and Design. We have a room next to the café and library and during the opening hours of the museum staff from WMSE are there to help with editing, questions about Wikipedia or free licenses, uploading images or the trustworthiness of the Wikimedia projects. Both staff from the museum, other GLAMs and visitors to the museum has visited us so far to ask for help or talk for a while. From the visitors, the questions range from the usual "Where does the money come from?" and "Can you really trust a site that anyone can edit?" to specific issues related to edits they did a while back where someone reverted their edits or they argued that the name of the article should be in capitals but the community didn't agree. From the GLAM staff that has visited us there has been questions regarding templates on both Wikipedia and Commons, how to create a new property on Wikidata, how to change user name and what sources to use in articles. So far we have talked to and helped more then 140 visitors. While being there we have also hosted a notability workshop, an Umepedia edit-a-thon, a translation sprint and coming up is an evening about source criticism with teachers attending.

Wikimedia Sweden AGM

The AGM of Wikimedia Sweden were held at The National Centre for Architecture and Design March 15. Anna Ekström (who is Director General at the National Agency for Education) was chair at the meeting, and also became a member while conducting the meeting. Kristina Berg was re-elected to the board, and is the GLAM-contact there. She is also working as a database coordinator at The National Centre for Architecture and Design.

Nobel Women

To celebrate the International Women's Day the Nobel Museum hosted an edit-a-thon where we focused on the articles of women Nobel laureates. During the event 22 of the 44 articles were expanded with a total of 23 940 bytes, images and infoboxes were added, and as an extra bonus Tawakkol Karman (who gave a speech at the museum) made short films where she presents herself in both Arabic and English.

#Arkividag in Oslo

At #Arkividag, Nordisk Arkivformedlingskonferense in Oslo March 18 Axel Pettersson gave a presentation about using Wikipedia (and Commons) as a public archive. He was also part of a panel with Tom Klev, Norsk kulturråd, and Kjerstin Kragseth, Bergen byarkiv, moderated by Charlotte S.H. Jensen, Nationalmuseet (Denmark) who talked on the topic Wikipedia and Archives about what the possibilities and advantages are, and also about some technical and other issues that needs to be worked on.

Art, Women, the Police and the build up to Wikimania

March was a diverse month both in the focus on diversity or international Women's day and in geographic diversity, with events in York, Dundee and the Midlands as well as London, a very high proportion of UK Wikimedians will have had an event within a couple of hours travel.

Police

Andy Mabbett led an event at the West Midlands Police Museum, gaining access for Wikipedians to a museum that is usually only open to researchers by appointment. A number of articles were improved, and, thanks to the curators kindly removing glass fronts from display cases, many great pictures were taken (some still awaiting transfer from Flickr). This was probably the first UK editathon to be visited by an armed response vehicle, whose crew kindly posed for pictures, and displayed some of their specialist equipment, on the proviso that their faces were not shown!

Diversity

Wikimedia UK supported international Women's day with support for two GLAM events. one on artists at Goldsmiths and the other on female archaeologists. The event at the Petrie Museum was sufficiently successful that we are planning a fringe event for just after Wikimania.

Scotland

March saw the first event in Dundee, an editathon focussed on female Scottish artists.

York

Pat Hadley, the Wikimedian in Residence at the Yorkshire Museums trust, hosted an editathon in York.

Royal Society of Chemistry

On 28 March, a number of volunteers delivered an all-day training session in the library of the Royal Society of Chemistry's impressive London headquarters, Burlington House, on Piccadilly. The audience included RSC staff, fellows and guests, including academics and journal editors.

Wikimania London 2014

All the submissions are in for events at this year's Wikimania and there are 55 in the GLAM and Free Culture track. The programme committee is currently assessing them and the hundreds of other submissions, one of their criteria for choosing what goes in the programme is the level of interest, so please look through the submissions and sign up for the ones you would most like to see.

June Free Culture hack

As part of the build up to Wikimania there will be a Free culture hack on 7 and 8 of June.

Women's History Month

Overview

Women's history month has been very busy! There have been successful edit-a-thons in a number of cities. These included an edit-a-thon for Women in Science at the Smithsonian and another at the University of Oklahoma. Bryn Mawr College also held an edit-a-thon, organized by Marianne Weldon and Evan McGonagill and coached by Mary Mark Ockerbloom. Bryn Mawr has also started releasing images from their collections on Wikimedia Commons. At the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia, Mary Mark Ockerbloom worked with oral history staff to release images of women scientists for women's history month and hosted the monthly GLAM Café. Audrey Hamelers and Jordan Howell are organizing an edit-a-thon to be held at the University of Delaware Library in April. The month wrapped up on March 30, with the Women in the Arts Editathon 2014 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

7-Sisters Edit-a-Thons

On March 1st the 7-Sisters Colleges virtual Wikipedia Edit-a-Thons in the Northeast kicked off with events hosted at Barnard College in New York,Mount Holyoke, Bryn Mawr,Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe College, and Smith College.

Columbia Edits

On March 18th, Columbia University Libraries participated in the #GWWI (Global Women Wikipedia Write-In) as a virtual Edit-a-Thon with Emory University. The following week, METRO's WiR, User:OR drohowa gave a talk at Columbia Library on New York Wikipedia Engagement.

WikiConference USA

Wikimedia NYC continues to plan WikiConference USA 2014. It has received around 50 session proposals so far viewable on the site for review, and has extended the deadline for proposals until April 16, 2014.

Józef Piłsudski Institute of America

The Józef Piłsudski Institute of America GLAM project is going strong after the Institute appointed Piotr Puchalski as their volunteer Wikipedian-in-Residence and is adding articles in English and in Polish on their archival materials, including Franciszek Januszewski, and uploads in commons:Category:Collections of Józef Piłsudski Institute of America.

Open Access at Wikimania; Open Access Button; Topic Pages

Open Access Button updates

Since February, the Open Access Button team have been covering recent developments around Open Access in their "The Week in Links" series. Although published a little less frequently than the name suggests, they provide informative and accessible summaries on the matter. For example, the March 14 issue covers the SPARC 2014 Conference that took place on March 3-4 in Kansas City as well as various blog posts, anniversaries, policy developments, and related news.

Publishing scholarly papers with, and on, Wikipedia

A case study of PLOS Computational Biology's Topic Pages - for which scholarly review articles are written to be published first in the journal, then on the English Wikipedia - has been compiled by User:MartinPoulter and was published on the blog of Jisc, where he served as Wikimedia Ambassador until the end of March.

Wikimania

A multitude of Open-Access-related session proposals have been submitted for this year's Wikimania by the March 31 deadline. Besides a panel discussion on Open Access & Wikipedia with Jimmy Wales, these include

Furthermore, three prominent figures in Open Access - Elizabeth Marincola, Peter Murray-Rust and Jack Andraka - have been confirmed as keynote speakers.

Signalling OA-ness

The Signalling OA-ness project has fine-tuned its timeline and started to test workflows for importing full-text articles from PubMed Central into the English Wikisource (details on GitHub). Session proposals related to the project have been submitted to WikiCon USA, OKFest and Wikimania.
