Wiki Loves Art Belgium; Wiki Loves Monuments in Belgium & Luxembourg

On Friday 25 November 2016 we organised the award ceremony of the photo contests Wiki Loves Art Belgium 2016 and Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Belgium and Luxembourg. Both photo contests had as goal to make our cultural heritage in art and architecture more visible to the public and to enlarge the awareness for these subjects with enthusiasts and institutions. All images have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons to be used on Wikipedia and beyond.

The combined award ceremony took place at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in the Parc du Cinquantenaire in Brussels. This institution supports us in our mission since 2011!!

In November 2014 we started with the first preparations of Wiki Loves Art. We wanted to set up a project to reach out to cultural institutions and make it relatively easy for them to participate and get acquainted with Wikipedia and Wikimedia. This resulted in the participation of 13 cultural institutions in the period July-August 2016, with the organisation of 16 photography sessions, and with over 3000 photos uploaded in the contest.

Besides our partners (Packed, FARO, Open Knowledge Belgium, and Creative Commons Belgium - more info here) and the participating institutions that supported us, we got also support from Studio Baxton and the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage.

An independent jury choose the 12 best photos. The photographers who made these photos received a prize during the ceremony.

In September 2011 we organised for the first time Wiki Loves Monuments in Belgium and Luxembourg. In 2016 we organised for the fifth time the event to make the cultural heritage of Belgium and Luxembourg visible for the public. This resulted in over 3000 photos uploaded in the contest.

The project was sponsored by the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage, the Brussels Capital Region, Società Dante Alighieri Antwerpen, and the Catholic University of Leuven.

An independent jury choose the 9 best photos without looking who took them. The photographers who made these photos received a prize during the ceremony.

Opening the Mathematics box in a context of widespread innumeracy

The User Group Wikimedia in Brazil launched the initial step of a GLAM initiative with the University of São Paulo Museum of Mathematics, aka "Matemateca," in November. The goal is to upload pictures, media files and educational resources of the entire museum collection, an estimated total of 300 objects. This initial step and the work as a whole are conducted by independent volunteer and valued contributor to the Wikimedia Movement Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton (at Commons: Rodrigo.Argenton) and user-group members; metadata will be created under the supervision of the museum director, Eduardo Colli, by a student worker, who was awarded a university fellowship to contribute to this GLAM initiative and who is associated to the Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Center for Neuromathematics (RIDC NeuroMat, or simply NeuroMat).

This GLAM initiative is part of an ongoing set of programs and activities the Wikimedia User Group has developed to improve content on Mathematics in Wikimedia projects, particularly on Wikipedia in Portuguese. Entries have been systematically improved --for instance, Law of large numbers, Probability distribution, Random variable. This set of activities gathers university professors in Statistics, Mathematics and Journalism, graduate and undergraduate fellows, and Wikimedia volunteers.

The initiative with Matemateca occurs in a general scenario of widespread mathematical illiteracy in Brazil. In the last OCDE PISA assessment of numeracy, Brazil was ranked among the worst countries in terms of mathematical skills. This means that in general Brazilian students are unable to rely on Mathematics to describe, predict and explain phenomena. Innumeracy in Brazil has increased from 2012 to 2015, according to this assessment.

The User Group Wikimedia in Brazil strongly believes Wikimedia projects may have a decisive role in improving scientific literacy in Brazil and other developing countries. Scientific literature tells us the quality of contributions in projects is associated to the level of scientific culture of the country from which contributions are coming, thus in general content in English and German will normally be of higher quality than content in languages normally associated to countries with a lower level of scientific culture. The belief of Wikimedia in Brazil around the uses of Wikimedia projects in scientific dissemination is that this association between level of scientific culture and quality of Wikimedia projects might go the other way around too: as projects like Wikipedia in Portuguese are improved eventually one might expect a tendency for higher levels of scientific culture in Portuguese.

Pictures of the work at Matemateca are not yet available as no upload will be made until proper procedures with the OTRS community are followed. A specific license template was produced and will be associated to each upload. Equipment for this GLAM initiative was granted by the WMF, as a rapid grant. After the preliminary work is done --a total of eight objects are being produced, to provide a good sense of technical challenges in this initiative--, a strategic coordinating meeting will take place in order to assess needs and resources for the full completion of the GLAM initiative. Eventually, this initiative might rely on a new tool called GLAMpipe in order to massively upload files and associated metadata the student worker will produce.

GLAM initiative on veterinary anatomy

As reported in August and September, the User Group Wikimedia in Brazil has been developing a GLAM initiative with the University of São Paulo Museum of Veterinary Anatomy. So far, 95 pictures have been uploaded out of an estimated total of 300 to 400 images. Over 20 images have been recognized either as valued or as featured pictures; three images have been used as picture of the day.

GLAM initiatives with the University of São Paulo Museum of Mathematics and Museum of Veterinary Anatomy are part of an ongoing effort to spread GLAM programs into as many of the 60 museums and cultural organizations of this top university --the best in Latin American-- as possible.

Because of the original feature of connecting a student worker to the GLAM work on veterinary anatomy, this initiative was chosen to be presented as a case study for the GLAM wiki community. This case study is already available in English and Portuguese.

Outcomes from the Parliament's collaboration and more

Edit-a-thon about Women in the Ivorian Parliament

As mentioned last month, a collaboration was started with the archives staff of the Parliament of Côte d'Ivoire. For the Wikimedia Community User Group of Côte d'Ivoire, the main purpose of this partnership is, on one hand, to enrich the existing article of the Ivorian parliament on Wikipedia (FR). On the other hand, a focus is set on the women caucus in the Parliament of Côte d'Ivoire. For now, their role as politicians and their actions on the field are shadowed. On November 29th, a workshop was help with the staff of the Parliament's archives. Valuable documents and data were gathered.

On that basis, the article on Women in the Ivorian Parliament could be created and edited. This article includes details concerning the number of women in every legislature of the Ivorian republic since 1966. Even though it is a draft for now, the article is expected to cover various aspects such as the key roles these women have been playing in the Parliament, their biographies, etc.

Ivorian literature, the after-brainstorming

In collaboration with Goethe-Institut, the Ivorian literature in 10 points initiative is to be launched in 2017. Prior to that, on November 11th, at the headquarters of WCUG-CI, the local User Group set up a brainstorming session for identifying the contents as well as the actions that could be carried out during this project. What started out as a project for enriching only the Bernard Dadié article on Wikipedia (FR), turned into a large-scale initiative.

Started in 2015, the BSF Campus program was initiated in Côte d'Ivoire by BSF (Libraries Without Borders). This program gathered 12 young leaders working in the library environment in Côte d'Ivoire. Among them, was Donatien Kangah, chairperson of WCUG-CI who applied to BSF Campus with the Wiki GLAM initiative. A Year later, BSF Campus will move towards a new selection of youth. For the closing ceremony, the Librarians gathered at WCUG-CI headquarters.

Since one month, and for the next few month coming, everybody can submit photos of the museum Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille online... and share them with millions of people!
This museum associates itself with Wikimedia France and the most famous encyclopedia to launch the first collection of photos online about the history of the museum and invite the other museums of France to do the same.

Inaugurated in 1892, this museum is one of the most important museums in France. It houses collections retracing the history of European art, from antiquity to modern art. With its temporary exhibitions and events, it has also become a key venue of cultural life in Lille, capital of the new big regional Council Région Hauts-de-France.

Did you visit the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille ? Do you have photos of this visit? or are you in possession of archival documents about this museum?
If so, you can share your memories with internet users from around the world by posting them on the Wikimedia Commons platform.

Your photos or personal documents are testimonials of the museum through the ages. They will participate in the reconstruction of the history of the museum in pictures and can be used to illustrate articles of the encyclopedia Wikipedia on many subjects! They are likely to interest thousands or even millions of people. Whether it is a view of rooms, works, exhibitions, postcards or invitation cards... each image will provide a unique insight into what makes the identity and history of the Palais des Beaux-Arts. During special sessions, people can come and meet students, wikipedians and members ot the museum staff to deposit documents or oral testimony.

Two classes of university students (master I and II) are involved in the process. And a wikibook was created on this occasion to tell the history of the museum and how this museum is lived by those who visit it or working (in construction).


WikiLibrary Barcamp and Wikimedia-Salon

On 3rd of December the very first WikiLibrary Barcamp in Germany took place at Saxon State and University Library Dresden. About 60 participants from the Wikiverse and out of the librarian world took part. We had talks on libraries as co-working spaces*, on Wikisource as a ressort for library cooperation, how to reuse digitized material such as old bike routiers or on the sustainibility of apps created on library data for Coding da Vinci.

The aim was to establish closer links between volunteers of the Wikimedia projects and librarians and to initiate cooperations as well as an exchange of ideas. Some concrete agreements were for example the establishment of new Wikipedia meetups in libraries or the cooperation between Wikisource as data storage tool for old books. The barcamp was also a perfect occasion to promote the world wide campaign #1Lib1Ref that encourages librarians to add one reference to a Wikipedia article. Thus, the Hamburg State and University Library announced to start a competition between different libraries about who is going to add more references to Wikipedia.

Based on the initiative of volunteers, the WikiLibrary Barcamp was organised by Wikimedia Deutschland, the German Library Association and Saxon State and University Library Dresden. German Blogpost.

Wikimedia-Salon "The ABC of open knowledge"

On December 1st, the 15th event of the series "The ABC of open knowledge" took place at the Museum for Communication in Berlin. The topic was "no man's land - anarchy in the Internet?!". Eva Horn, social media editor at Spiegel Online (German online magazine) and Bruno Kramm, politician of the Pirate Party, discussed topics of populism, fake news and rules of communication in the Internet.

Since 2014, the series "The ABC of open knowledge" has discussed to each alphabetic character topic that are of relevance for a digitised society as for example to topics such as "memory", "collaboration" or "creative commons". Guests are politicians, scientists or people of the civil society.

For the second occasion Wikimedia México and the National Autonomus University of Mexico (UNAM), joined forces to continue contributing to free knowledge. The 17 of november of 2016, through of the Open University and Distance Education Coordination (Coordinación de Universidad Abierta y Educación a Distancia CUAED) and the Directorate General of Computation and Information and Communication Technologies (Dirección General de Cómputo y de Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación DGTIC), it was possible for the UNAM, to open its doors and invited teachers and academics to improve one of the most consulted sites on the Internet and the main reference of the students, Wikipedia. The principal objective was improve the quality of the information that exists in some articles of the encyclopaedia and create new; could be articles about the diferent organisms insite of the UNAM, or about of the subjects in which the teachers are specialists.

More than the number of articles edited and created, which amounted to 125 articles, many participants realized that it is very easy to contribute to Wikipedia and that they can improve the information that their students consult, and therefore it can be a more reliable reference.

The 19 of november, the Gallery of Contemporary Art Kurimanzutto and Wikimedia Mexico begin their collaboration with a edit-a-thon about contemporary artists represented by the gallery. The objective of this collaboration it's enrich the contents in the Wikimedia projects on Mexican contemporary art, as part of the program of Wikimedia Mexico with Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums iniciative (GLAM).

The edit-a-thon begin with a introduction of the contemporay art in Mexico, and how was created the Gallery Kurimanzutto in 1999, institution that promotes contemporary art and it's dissemination. Later, the activity consist in create and edit articles about some Mexican artist, or artist that working in Mexico, with the information in books, papers, magazines, and other media, joined by personal of the gallery.

In this process, the participants learn more about the contemporary art in Mexico and how working this artist. To the final, the Gallery Kurimanzutto gift books about the artist that working with this institution.

Edit-a-thon about heritage with the Cultural Corridor Roma Condesa

Within of the 17° edition of the Cultural Corridor Roma Condesa (Corredor Cultural Roma Condesa), which consists of a series of activities aimed at publicizing the cultural, artistic and gastronomic heritage of the colonies Roma, Condesa and Hipódromo, Wikimedia Mexico decided participate with a edit-a-thon about the heritage of this zone of Mexico City, specially buildings and museums.

The venue for this meeting was the Horizontal Center (Centro Horizontal), cultural center create in this year. The objective was create articles about the buildings considerated heritage and emblematic of this zone. For it was used bibliography on the area, besides having the presence of some neighbors and outstanding people who live or lived in those colonies.

This experience allowed us to know a little more about this part of the city, how it has been modified to become an area characterized by diversity and attractions for own and strangers, which allows valuing it from other perspectives

Temminck Groll Collection

In November 2016, the Temminck Groll Collection of the Dutch Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed, consisting of 2,641 historical photographs, was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

It’s a collection of photos of historical buildings and heritage in the following countries/regions:

  • Ghana

  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Dutch Antilles
  • Sri Lanka
  • Suriname
  • South Africa

These are all regions with which the Dutch have historical relations. The Dutch architect and architectural historian Coen Temminck Groll (1925-2015) shot these photos while travelling and studying 'shared cultural heritage' (heritage of the Netherlands located outside the country’s borders). These travels mainly took place in the 1960s and 1970s.

Temminck Groll worked on the subject of the shared cultural heritage of the Netherlands his entire life, and has widely published about it.

The collection is made available to Wikimedia Commons in the context of the project The Netherlands and the world.

WW2 underground newspaper project presented during conference in Bonn

On 29th November Olaf Janssen, the GLAMwiki coordinator of the Dutch National Library , presented his project to describe all Dutch underground resistance newspapers from WW2 (page in Dutch) on Dutch Wikipedia. He did this during the Semantic Web in Libraries 2016 (SWIB 2016) conference, 28-30 November 2016, Bonn, Germany. His slidedeck is here.

Outline of talk: During the second World War some 1.300 illegal newspapers were issued by the Dutch resistance. Right after the war as many of these newspapers as possible were physically preserved by Dutch memory institutions. They were described in formal library catalogues that were digitized and brought online in the ‘90s. In 2010 the national collection of underground newspapers – some 200.000 pages – was full-text digitized in Delpher, the national aggregator for historical full-texts. Having created online metadata and full-texts for these publications, the third pillar context was still missing, making it hard for people to understand the historic background of the newspapers. We are currently running a project to tackle this contextual problem. We started by extracting contextual entries from a hard-copy standard work on Dutch illegal press and combined these with data from the library catalogue and Delpher into a central LOD triple store. We then created links between historically related newspapers and used Named Entity Recognition to find persons, organisations and places related to the newspapers. We further semantically enriched the data using DBPedia. Next, using an article template to ensure uniformity and consistency, we generated 1.300 Wikipedia article stubs from the database. Finally, we sought collaboration with the Dutch Wikipedia volunteer community to extend these stubs into full encyclopedic articles. In this way we can give every newspaper its own Wikipedia article, making these WW2 materials much more visible to the Dutch public, over 80% of whom uses Wikipedia. At the same time the triple store can serve as a source for alternative applications, like data visualizations. This will enable us to visualize connections and networks between underground newspapers, as they developed over time between 1940 and 1945.

User Ronn has completed a wonderful solo project. He’s a passionate writer on articles about Dutch sculpture. During the writing of these articles he regularly encountered artists who also designed stained glass. He discovered the book Glas in lood in Nederland 1817-1968, which is known as a standard in this field, with 147 biographies and information about the history of this craft. Thanks to a financial contribution of Wikimedia Nederland this rather expensive book could be purchased by him.

In 2013 there were about 370 photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons that were made for the book. The photos were donated by the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency (Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed) and were categorized on church/building. Ronn has put them all in one category and has linked the maker with each window, and done this for or as many windows in the buildings categories as possible. With the creation of 90 new categories for artists and commemoration windows on Commons the findability has increased for these photo’s. For the Dutch Wikipedia Ronn wrote or substantially improved a little over 100 articles. New articles are for example (in Dutch) Atelier F. Nicolas en Zonen (1855), Femmy Schilt-Geesink, Wim van Woerkom, Gedenkramen in het Academiegebouw (Groningen) (1931-1957) and Een tuin van glas (2005).

For the project he corresponded with several GLAM institutions, including the Rijksmuseum. On the base of this correspondence the Rijksmuseum released an extra 7500 photo's under a free license.

Ronn spend a little more than one year completing this project. He calls it a solo project but, as he says himself, got help from many others. It goes to show that with the persistence of one person and help from others within the community a lot can be accomplished!


#faktajakt and Armenia contest

We are getting ready for this year's #1lib1ref (#faktajakt will be the Norwegian hashtag in use). And we are lucky enough to welcome two interns from The Department of Archivistics, Library and Information Science at The Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences to the Wikimedia Norge office in January. We have a Norwegian bokmål and Norwegian Nynorsk translation of the citation hunt tool ready and the first step in our outreach to librarians is an article in the January edition of the journal for librarians, Bbliotekaren, out January 11th.

Armenia - Norway editing contest

Wikimedia Armenia and Wikimedia Norge have collaborated on an editing contest where Armenians write articles about Norway and Norwegians write about Armenia. The contest is still running in Norway, with 58 new articles so far. The jury of the Norwegian contest consists of two active editors, a representative from The National Archive and a journalist from one of the major Norwegian newspapers. The winner gets a trip to Armenia and we will of course welcome the Armenian winner to Norway sometime in 2017. The response in Armenia is amazing! More to come when we have the winners!

In November Wikimedia Spain has collaborated in organizing two edit-a-thons; the first one was celebrated in November 5 and focused on Canary fortifications. It was organized by the Ciudad y el Mar, Castillo de Mata Museum, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The second one was held at the Energy Museum, in Ponferrada. It was carried out in November 12 and focused on the history of the museum (a former thermal power plant) and mining in the Bierzo shire. Both were covered by the press, radio and television, achieving an outstanding visibility at the local level.

For the second consecutive year, Wikimedia Spain organized a Wikipedia course at the library of the campus La Yutera, in Palencia, belonging to the Valladolid University. During four sessions, the participants have learnt what Wikipedia is, the basic notions of editing, and have created their first articles.

Wiki Loves Folk & others

Wikimedia Spain continues organizing Wiki Loves Folk, a public photo contest around folklore. After the two first periods of participation in April and August, between November and December is opened the third and last period for uploading pictures. We hope to know the winners at the end of the year.

In November, Wikimedia Spain covered five events for obtaining free pictures: the Medium-length Films International Festival of Valencia, the rally Ribeira Sacra, an international handball match between the national teams of Spain and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and two DJ events in Madrid.

Participation at the EuroMed 2016 Conference

As part of the COH project we presented a paper at the EuroMed 2016 Conference in Nicosia, Cyprus. The peer-reviewed paper "Reaching the world through free licenses and Wikimedia’s crowdsourced platforms" is focusing on the COH project and it was very well received. In competition with 502 other submitted articles it received a price in one out of three paper categories and won the "Werner Weber Best Paper Award for SHORT Paper".

Mapping workshop at the National Museums of World Culture, Stockholm

As preparation for a batch-upload we organized a workshop for museum staff to help map keywords with Wikidata items and improve content on Wikidata. This type of workshop is something we are thinking about adding as a standard offer to new GLAM organizations partnering with us.

Meeting museum directors in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Two staff members traveled to Bosnia to meet with directors and staff at four museums in and around Sarajevo and with our local partner organization Foundation Cultural Heritage without Borders Bosnia and Herzegovina (CHwB Bosnia). The goal was to present the possibility of working with the Wikimedia movement and to identify ways of working together in the future, with a focus on the ongoing efforts to batch-upload material in the Connected Open Heritage project. The GLAMs had reached very different maturity levels around digitization, but all meetings were very positive and there was interest to host local events in the future and supply us with the material that was digitized. CHwB Bosnia is very interested in organizing Wiki Loves Monuments in the future, and we discussed the possibilities around this.

As a result of a seminar in August, The National Association of Swedish Handicraft Societies hosted a workshop in how to edit Wikipedia and how to make content available at Wikimedia Commons. Nine participants got the basics in improving content, creating new articles and uploading images along with information about notability, copyright and other important parts before getting in to contributing to the Wikimedia Projects. Hopefully the result will be more articles on the topic of craft and better illustrations for already existing articles.

Wikipedia training with the National Library concludes

First training session for librarians in September 2016.

In preparation of the 1lib1ref campaign, Wikimedia Sverige partnered up with the National Library of Sweden in September to offer Wikipedia training sessions for library staff on three monthly occasions, ending in November. Participants came mainly from the National Library but 9 other libraries were also represented as invitations were open on a first come first served basis. 26 librarians participated in the training which was focused on Wikipedia basics and adding citations.

The annual autumn meeting of the Swedish National Heritage Board offered a great number of interesting talks and panels. One of the panels concerned the future opportunities of digitisation in the GLAM sector, and the panellists were Anna Troberg (ED of Wikimedia Sweden), David Mothander (Google), and Rasmus Fleischer (author).

Uppsala stadsarkiv

November 22th, the Wikimedia-community in Uppsala held an event in cooperation with the Uppsala municipality- and city-archive (Uppsala stadsarkiv), and the popular movement archive (Folkrörelsearkivet) about Wikipedia and local history. Axel Pettersson (WMSE) gave a presentation about what Wikipedia is based on the five pillars. The evening was short, just 1,5 hour between 18:00 and 19:30, so the computers remained untouched with room for more discussions. Many good questions was raised. The audience certainly appriciated the connections to Uppsala that was made by the archive institutions as well as Axel Pettersson. Examples matters, and give good room for interesting discussions.

Brunnsmuseet Sätra brunn as GLAM-institution

Brunnsmuseet is a small museum institution without any employees. The museum was opened in 2014 and have had three summer exhibitions so far. In October, they did put all their efforts together in a GLAM-project. Hopefully, the project will make others find and contribute to this project. Sätra brunn is a spa house that was founded in 1700.

In September, Brunnsmuseet were given 30.000 SEK (around 3000€) from the local Sala sparbank to make their digital archive accessible and available online. With help from Wikimedia Sverige, a upload template was made as a combined information and categorisation engine. Images with the templates are placed in either of two categories: Media provided by Brunnsmuseet or Media from Brunnsmuseet exhibitions.

Debate about the freedom of panorama in Linköping

Who owns what online? Datamuseet IT-ceum and Östergötlands museum set out to find the answer by inviting Wikimedia Sverige’s executive director, Anna Troberg, and Bilduphovsrätt i Sveriges CEO, Mats Lindberg to a debate about the freedom of panorama. Previously, the two organisations had only met in court to settle a case concerning Wikimedia Sverige’s website Offentligkonst.se. This event created an opportunity for both parties to expand on their views on the matter. The outcome of the debate unfortunately displayed the void that exists between the more traditional representatives of the creative sector and the more progressive movements who look to the future. However, debates like these are important for the mutual understanding of the other's view on things, which ultimately is the fundation of any movement forward. The debate was moderated by Carl Schlyter, a member of the Swedish parliament.

LSH Upload

The 5th major upload from the Royal Armoury, Skokloster Castle and the Hallwyl Museum has just concluded with 5,020 new images being made available to Wikimedia Commons. The cooperation has now contributed with a total of more than 46,000 images over a three year period. In this batch you will find a large collection of jewellery, historical coins and medals and historical images (late 19th century) from Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East. Please have a look if you find any images you can put to use in some articles and let us know which your favourite image is at @WikimediaSE.


Ukrainian Museums Issued Additional Awards for Wiki Loves Monuments 2016

On December, 3rd, Wikimedia Ukraine held joint Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth awards ceremony. Diplomas, prizes or souvenirs were prepared for both contests winners and not only for photographers of top 10 photos but in nominations that are traditionally awarded by WMUA: top 10 users by the number of pictured monuments, best photos of each administrative region, top users by the number of monuments pictured in each region. The list included about 60 names and more than half of them came to the ceremony.

In addition, there were two special nominations established by the historic preserve National Conservation Area “Saint-Sophia of Kiev” and the National Museum of the History of Ukraine. The Sophia of Kyiv supported WMUA's initiative to join the contest as a partner and also award a prize for the best photo of monuments maintained by the preserve among those submitted to the contest. Sofia's complex includes 60 architectural monuments on the territory of five landmarks in Kyiv and Sudak (Crimea). Photo series of Genova's Fortress was announced as winning one.

The National Museum's of the History of Ukraine special nomination was meant to choose the best photo of the civic architecture built during the Cossack Hetmanate times (17-18 centuries).

Year-round museum admission and a book were given to the winner.

The ceremony itself was held in the mentioned National Museum of the History of Ukraine alongside the exhibition of winning photos.

Holiday season events with new partners

Washington DC edit-a-thon activities

Andrew Lih and Jim Hayes helped train University of Maryland academics on Wikipedia principles, with the plan to host an Art+Feminism event in 2017.

Wikimedia DC will be hosting several edit-a-thons in the first week of December with new partners.

  • The US Holocaust Memorial and Museum - The first-ever edit-a-thon with the USHMM will focus on topics related to Human Rights Day (December 10) and will help train museum staff in Wikipedia basics. Fuzheado has been helping coordinate the topics and article lists.

Wikimedia New York City outreach activities

Lulu #WikiDawg says Wikipedia:BOLD!

The end of the year is proving to be very busy for Wikipedia outreach activities in New York City.

  • On November 2, 2016, WM NYC supported a Fordham 175th Anniversary Editathon that celebrated Fordham's 175th Anniversary. The event was held at the Rose Hill Campus up in the Bronx
  • The Second Annual Women-In-Science Edit-a-thon was held at New York Academy of Sciences on Saturday, November 12, 2016. We were very happy at the new and continuing editor engagement, which was augmented by the presence of Lulu #WikiDawg bearing excellent Wiki #swag
  • The first New York City area Indigenous People's Justice editathon was held at Interference Archive on Sunday, November 13, 2016
  • A new series of WMF grant-funded Accessibility Hackathons has been started. This month the event was held on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at Wiki-Ally Babycastles, a gallery space and art collective where we often meet for WikiWednesdays
  • And recently, a Grey Literature Edit-a-thon was held at New York Academy of Medicine on Thursday, December 1, 2016
  • As part of Wikipedia Asian Month, Wikimedia NYC supported a Contemporary Chinese Art Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim on Saturday, December 3, 2016. This was part of the "Tales of Our Time" exhibit at the Guggenheim. Editors were treated to free admittance to the exhibition after the editathon.

AfroCROWD activities and outreach

  • AfroCROWD connected via virtual link with students at West Virginia University in November for a Wikipedia editathon hosted by Wikipedian in Residence Kelly Jeanne. The event took place in the college's Center for Black Culture, celebrating its 25th year and highlights the effective use of services for virtually linked presentations during edit-a-thons.
  • AfroCROWD's year-end Wikipedia editathon will focus on elected officials of the African Diaspora on December 18th, 1-5pm, a day before the United States Electoral College makes its historic vote on the presidential election. This will also be AfroCROWD's end of the year event, so there atmosphere will be in celebration of a very busy year of monthly edit-a-thons, seminars and other activities to welcome and encourage new and growing editors. Join us for free food and drinks. Wikipedia coaches will be on hand for individual help.

Black Lunch Table outreach activities

The Black Lunch Table (BLT) is an ongoing collaboration between artists Jina Valentine and Heather Hart which intends to fill holes in the documentation of contemporary art history.
Past events have been held all over North America, starting at the inaugural event at Studio Museum in Harlem, then events at:

  • Museum of Modern Art
  • The Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans
  • A series of events at McColl Center in Charlotte, Virginia
  • Project Row Houses in Houston, Texas
  • And other venues including Banff Centre in Canada

On November 16, 2016, Black Lunch Table hosted an editathon at Weeksville Heritage Center as part of the 2016 BRIC Biennial.

Upcoming Black Lunch Table activities include an event at Brooklyn's BRIC House Stoop.

WikiConference North America User Group approved

WikiConference North America group photo

The affiliations committee has approved the Wikiconference North America User Group, which is coming off of the successful WikiConference North America 2016 in San Diego, California, where it staged the one-day GLAM event, Wiki Culture Crawl at Balboa Park. The group will focus on making the conference a regular and sustainable regional event, and working with key GLAM partners.


Open access on the 2016 Community Wishlist; Over 1k new video uploads

Simpler reuse of open-access text is on the 2016 Community Wishlist

As part of the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey, a proposal has been put forward to adapt the Visual Editor to facilitate incorporation of text from open-access sources into Wikipedia articles, with proper attribution. To Visual Editor users, this functionality could be presented as in the mock-ups embedded below:

The following represents a selection of the files that have been uploaded this month from open-access sources. Most of these (more than 1k) came from PubMed Central through the Open Access Media Importer — whose uploads now total over 31,100. If you can think of wiki pages where these files (or other files from the same source articles) could be useful, please put them in there or let us know. Several of them have already been reused this way, along with many others that had been uploaded earlier.

Digitization, #1lib1ref, and Tech Updates

Digitization Case studies portal drafted and Scoping next Portal

As part of my work documenting case studies and experiences of the Wikimedia community, I have encountered a lot of interest and questions about how to implement projects that either a) help institutions expand their digital collections (digitization), or b) or actively work to disseminate, share and enrich those collections (batch uploads to Commons + engagement of the Wikimedia Communities).

Thus, I have compiled a range of different models for this work into a portal here on outreach: Digitization. I am reaching out to folks who have specific models for implementing these projects, to write better case studies for the portal. For example, I recently worked with User:Joalpe to document a case study from the São Paulo Museum of Veterinary Anatomy. If you have a project that you think will fit well within the scope of the portal, please let me know.

The next step for me, in developing the GLAM case studies online, is to evaluate the other major component of GLAM-Wiki: sharing institutional knowledge in Wikimedia projects by building institutional capacity (workshops and Wikipedians in Residence), promoting direct contribution (training staff to edit and editathons) and collaborating or advising with other groups (Wikipedia Visiting Scholars, Education program assignments).

Structured Data on Commons External Funding Request Feedback ended and proposal submitted

We finished the commenting on the larger project plan at commons:Commons:Structured data, and submitted the request to the external funder. The work completed to scope, and outline a timeline for working on Structured Commons makes it possible to engage others to further the project.


#1lib1ref ramping up

If you haven't already noticed in our other spaces, #1lib1ref is ramping up. Like last year, we are running the campaign under the "Wikipedia Library" brand on meta Wiki: see http://1lib1ref.org.

The two main tools for the campaign, Citation Hunt and the Hashtag tools, now support a number of more languages, and there is support for the campaign from many more affiliates than last year. If you want to support the campaign, please reach out to Alex Stinson astinson@wikimedia.org.

Programs and Events Dashboard

The Programs and Events Dashboard has been released in a Beta, for use by program leaders. To learn more about the dashboard, see the introduction to the Dashboard by Amanda Bittaker: on YouTube.

Further documentation on how to use the dashboard will be upcoming at meta:Programs & Events Dashboard/Using the Dashboard

The Dashboard is ideal for application for editathons and other time-bound, and focused events where you know who the participants are.

Community Tech Wishlist

The current WMF Community Tech Wishlist, is currently in its voting phase through December 12, make sure to participate.

There are a number of GLAM related requests including 7 proposals about programs, a number of Commons requests that are related (including an Artwork upload Wizard, and a Changes feed for use of Media elsewhere in Wikimedia Projects, many Wikisource usability requests, and many Wikidata Requests Make sure to vote.
