Edit-a-thon in the Parque de la Memoria and new materials in Commons

New material in Wikimedia Commons

In the month of september we release materials and data from different cultural institutions of Argentina.

  • The Argentine Academy of Letters release 52 news books to Wikimedia Commons.
  • Buenos Aires donated a data set with more than 5000 item to create in Wikidata.
  • The office of the Ombudsman release 74 files about the city of Buenos Aires.

Edit-a-thon Art&Memory

On September 23th the staff and volunteers of Wikimedia Argentina made an edit-a-thon in the Parque de la Memoria. The event started with a guide tour for the park, after that the GAC (the street art group made) made a presentation about Art&Memory and then the group of volunteers edited about Art&Memory.

2017 Edit-a-thon in the Research Library in Olomouc

At the Study Room of Historical Collections

The 2017 Edit-a-thon in the Research Library in Olomouc, the Czech Republic, was held on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 September 2017 on the occasion of the European Heritage Days. Its aim was to write or expand Wikipedia articles on the topics recommended by the library. The event, supported by the association Wikimedia Czech Republic, took place in the library for the second time (see the 2016 report) and it seems it could become a traditional annual event.

Thirteen Wikipedians from various regions of the Czech Republic took part in the event. Ten of them arrived in person and three more contributed on-line. The work on the recommended topics was interspersed with several excursions in the library. On Friday the participants were shown round the main library building, where they were informed about the principles of acquiring books and other items and about the way of archiving periodicals. Then they visited the Digitalization Department, where they could see how old books and periodicals are scanned and preserved in the electronic form using various types of scanners, including the robotic scanner DL-mini. On Saturday they visited the Study Room of Historical Collections where they admired some of the rare manuscripts and prints preserved in the library. Another interesting experience was the visit of the so called Red Church, which is a Gothic-Revival building, a former evangelic church, nowadays used as a library store completely filled with piles of books.

Results

At the archive of periodicals

When working on the recommended topics, the Wikipedians could use the library sources. As a result 30 new articles were written and many others expanded, adding 140 thousand bytes (about 16 thousand words) to the Czech Wikipedia. The new articles included for example Vila Františky Lipčíkové (about a cubistic building in Olomouc), Turnerská tělocvična v Olomouci (about a former gymnasium of the German Turner movement), Lili Gödlová-Brandhuberová (about an Olomouc artist), Židovský hřbitov v Olomouci (about the Jewish cemetery in the city) and others. One participant, who is active on Czech and also Serbian Wikipedia, wrote an article about the Czechoslovak soldier František Dastich both in Czech and in Serbian. Besides that 121 files (including one video) were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and 45 thousand bytes (including 17 new items) were added to Wikidata in connection with the edit-a-thon.

Impact

The edit-a-thon was valued as very useful by the Olomouc librarians again and Wikimedia Czech Republic was offered to continue with this event every year. Librarian Lukáš Sochor informed about it very positively at the conference Knihovny současnosti 2017 (Libraries of Today 2017), where it was presented as one of good ways of cooperation of a library with Wikimedia projects. As a result Wikimedia Czech Republic was contacted by the Moravian-Silesian Research Library in Ostrava, which expressed a wish of cooperation. One of the edit-a-thon participants was inspired by the event and plans to organize a similar event in his city (Zlín) soon.

A two days workshop and edit-a-thon was held at the musée de Bretagne (museum of Brittany) in Rennes for the European Heritage Days. There was a Wikimedia stand and a OpenStreetMap stand. Among the outcome was some import and improvement of data in Wikidata, some uploads of photos on Commons and interior cartography of the museum on OpenStreetMap. More collaboration are expected.

La Teste-de-Buch

A conference about Wikipedia was held in the newly opened library of La Teste-de-Buch. Local Wikipedians hope that it will be the first step of a cooperation with local historians.

Follow-up of wikidays 2014 in Bordeaux

In 2014, Wikimedia France concluded a partnership with the city of Bordeaux and its museums. This partnership continues to operate and on 14th September, the museum welcomed Wikimedians to visit the exhibition about Georges Dorignac. The visit was followed by an edit session at the library of musée des beaux-arts de Bordeaux.

Museums, archives, libraries and galleries are digitizing more and more of their collections. Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata are more and more sought for cooperation. Difficult is still the bridging. Quite often staff in the GLAM institutions are willing to become part of the Wikimedia community but lack the skills. Licensing for one, working the metadata to make it fit for Wikimedia Commons templates is an other realm and finally uploading large amounts of images and its metadata to Commons are hurdles that prevent GLAM institutions to share their content as free knowledge.

As Wikimedia Deutschland is running the GLAM hackathon Coding da Vinci with partners in the fourth year we wanted to make it easier for GLAM institutions to contribute to the Wikimedia projects. We drafted a three-part workshop on four days and invited the GLAM institutions planning to participate at the hackathon with their datasets to join the workshops. The first day aimed on licenses. The workshop ©©Change Your mind was an accepted format to discuss specific questions on the datasets provided for Coding da Vinci. On the second day we taught the participants how to polish the metadata to their media files with Open Refine. And on day 3 and 4 Arne Wossink from Wikimedia Nederlands showed us how to use Pattypan.

Checking the results you may think the workshop could have been more effective. We had 29 silent films, 300 coins, 100 floral designs and 2500 tableaus of railway tickets uploaded. But we had a tight documentation on the four days both by video and by an E-learning manufacturer. Our aim is to provide soon a complete E-Learning toolset "Prepare Your data" for GLAM institutions how they can contribute with their digitized cultural heritage and content to Wikimedia. We will keep your posted.

GLAM exhibition spurs interest among volunteers

For a second time we arranged a little exhibition at the annual WikiCon on GLAM activities. We tend to believe that those who are interested will know where to find information and motivation to become active in the GLAM field. But we learned that many volunteers for the first time saw only through the exhibition what GLAM is all about. Especially the printed books based on the Wikipedia articles that were written at the GLAM on Tour stations gained their fans. Books are still a honoured symbol for knowledge beyond the digital form everybody works on. As the GLAM work consists in institutions and volunteers cooperating, we must not forget to reach out to volunteers as much as to the institutions.


New Irish partnership

Exploring Creative Commons Licences workshop

The Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) and Wikimedia Community Ireland partnered to co-host a seminar on Exploring CC Licences on Tuesday 5 September 2017. This is the first in a series of collaborative events between the two groups.

Using the workshop developed by Barbara Fischer, Change Your Mind, the presentation covered open licences, copyright issues, and current developments in the EU as relevant to Irish GLAM professionals. Particular attention was paid to orphan works and upcoming changes to copyright under the EU Directive. For these sections, Dimitar Parvanov Dimitrov offered huge help and supplied links to the relevant supporting documents. All of the supporting materials on these complex topics have been made available to all the attendees.

The workshop placed participants in groups of three, and using an example digital object, they assessed the potential copyright issues and assigned a licence based on their discussion. This generated quite a lot of debate and discussion when the groups presented their findings to each other.

A follow up event exploring digital preservation and Wikimedia projects is being planned for late November.


WikiDonne and Wikidata

From BEIC to Wikidata

The Wikipedian in residence and the team of the Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e Cultura (BEIC) are working on Wikidata: using Mix'n'Match, in the last month 3616 entities about authors were updated (75% of the catalog). The creation of 1450 new entities about authors is scheduled in the early October.
At BEIC is also proceeding the enrichment of Wikipedia articles with the Acta Eruditorum illustrations, and the uploading on Wikimedia Commons of all books of the notable collection Scrittori d'Italia by Laterza, creating all indexes on Wikisource. Media from BEIC are now used on 10.122 pages on 204 wikis.

One year of WikiDonne

Inside the Bridging the gender gap session at CEE Meeting 2017 (Warsaw, 22-25 September) at Polin Museum, was presented One year of WikiDonne. A retrospective of one year of WikiDonne User Group's activity. Have been presented the over 30 events organized by August 2016: edit-a-thons, contests, challenges, campaigns and international collaborations. An important activity represents the common WikiMujeres - WikiDonne Le Imprescindibili - The Imprescindibles campaign (Las Imprescindibles), which consists in drawing up a list of 25 female biographies representative for each participating nation, women who have made the history of each individual country. After a survey on our social media channels we obtained the list with 25 names favorite by the users. Using the Create Book feature of the site, we created a volume containing the 25 biographies present in Wikipedia that was uploaded in Wikimedia Commons. We aim to make also a certain paper copies that can be distributed free of charge to schools and libraries.

On September 9, 2017 Gordana Jovik Stojkovska finished her three months tasks as Wikipedian in Residence of GLAM Macedonia at the City Library "Braḱa Miladinovci" in Skopje. This period was very productive and she accomplished all tasks that were planned in the project. We can proudly state that the agreement of collaboration with the City Library will continue in the 2018.

During the period of three months, the WiR at the City Library "Braḱa Miladinovci| accomplished the following:

  • The total number of added new references in the articles on the Macedonian Wikipedia is 301.
  • A successful Wiki-tour was held in June. A group of students was introduced with the Library Departments and were introduced with the information of how to use the City Library for their needs. Moreover, the students were introduced to the employees and were informed on how to use the Library for their future engagements.
  • A workshop was held with the group of students that took part in the Wiki-tour. This was the first edit-a-thon organised by the Wikipedian in Residence. The students had the chance to prepare and add text to articles on the Macedonian Wikipedia. They used the books available in the Library. In addition, the students were trained how to add references in the articles on Wikipedia.
  • At the end of the period a successful, second, edit-a-thon was held. The number of participants that took part in the edit-a-thon was 9, of which 3 were trained by the WiR at the City Library. The total number of new articles created at this event was 12.
  • The WiR trained 5 new users to edit on Wikipedia and they have created 22 new articles, and 6 existing articles were edited with text.

UNESCO WiR in Middelburg and Amsterdam

Sandra Fauconnier has spent two short Wikipedian in Residence periods at Dutch cultural institutions that take care of UNESCO Memory of the World documentary heritage.

In July-August 2017, Sandra worked for 8 days at Zeeland Archives (Zeeuws Archief), the archives of the Dutch province of Zeeland. Zeeuws Archief hosts the archives of the Middelburgse Commercie Compagnie, a trading company that, during its history, has mainly specialized in Atlantic slave trade. Its archives are listed on UNESCO's Memory of the World heritage list, as they are unusually complete and well-preserved and present a very deep - disturbing, but historically important - insight into how slave trade worked. During her Wikipedian in Residence project, Sandra trained staff member I.Mostert to become the institution's GLAMwiki ambassador. She helped him write his first Wikipedia articles. Together, they uploaded images to Wikimedia Commons related to Zeeuws Archief's collections. Many of the archive's holdings were also linked on Wikidata (incomplete list). An overview of ships managed by the Middelburgsche Commercie Compagnie was uploaded as a small dataset to Wikidata as well.

Sandra then worked for 6 days at three humanities research institutes in Amsterdam: the Meertens Institute, Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands, and the International Institute of Social History (IISH). Together, these three institutes form the so-called Humanities Cluster of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

IISH takes care of many international collections related to the global history of labour, workers, and labour relations. It has extensive collections about communism and socialism; several handwritten documents by Karl Marx in IISH's collection are listed on UNESCO's Memory of the World documentary heritage list. Sandra advised the three organisations on how they can interact with Wikimedia projects. She gave a two-day Wikimedia course to staff on location, where a great interest in further work with Wikimedia projects was expressed. During one of the workshops, a staff member of IISH uploaded a freshly digitised PDF of Marx' Das Kapital to Wikimedia Commons; an exemplar annotated by hand by Marx himself.

Culture and Citizenship

Culture and Citizenship Meeting

The past 28th and 29th of September we attended the III Meeting on Culture and Citizenship, organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, which took place in Madrid. It addressed the various dimensions that today imply -or should imply- the enjoyment and exercise of culture, in terms of access and production. Issues such as autonomy and cultural democracy, the review of the consumer-producer dichotomy, the need for a truly diverse and inclusive culture, the role of culture in the public space and the digital space, intermediation processes and the relationships between culture and education or the new institutions that derive from all this were the central points of the Meeting.

Workshop for SEDIC members

At the request of the Spanish Society of Documentation and Scientific Information (SEDIC), we have held a Wikipedia workshop in which we explained the policies of Wikimedia projects and the different possibilities of collaborating. The activity was held in the Regional Library Joaquín Leguina in Madrid and almost 20 people from the field of documentation, libraries and archives attended.


Third Edition of the Swiss Open Cultural Data Hackathon

On 15-16 September 2017, the third edition of the Swiss Open Cultural Data Hackathon took place in Lausanne. The event, which has already become tradition – "almost like a family gathering", as one of the participants remarked – took place for the first time in the French speaking part of Switzerland and attracted about 90 participants. As in the previous years, it has been a national event with an international flavour thanks to the participation of international guests.

While Wikidata had been present in the previous years, both through projects (e.g. the Wikidata Ancestor Tool that was created during the 2015 edition) and Workshops (last year, Wikimedia Sweden's Connected Open Heritage Project was presented), the Wikidata presence was brought to a whole new level this year.

The programme started off with a Wikidata Gathering that took place during the Thursday afternoon preceding the hackathon and attracted about 20 participants – mostly GLAM staff and students. They received a thorough introduction to Wikidata by Sandra Fauconnier, followed by an outline of the current status of heritage data in Wikidata by Beat Estermann, inspired by the insights from an earlier discussion during Wikimania 2017. The gathering was rounded off by a brainstorming session during which participants shared their project ideas in connection with Wikidata.

In the course of the hackathon, some 11 projects were pursued by the different groups. Roughly half of them were related to Wikidata in some way or the other. Here some examples:

Collaborative Face Recognition and Picture Annotation for Archives

Starting from a collection of League of Nations Photographs and a challenge proposed by the United Nations Library, a group of students from Lyon took it upon themselves to develop a face recognition tool that can be run on photograph collections and annotates pictures with the information about the people depicted on them, linking them to their Wikidata entry (see: project description page; video of the final presentation).

Representatives of the Swiss Archives for the Performing Arts and the Fachinformationsdienst Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt (www.performing-arts.eu), along with other hackathon participants, tackled the question of how best to ingest data about theatrical productions into Wikidata. The test dataset was provided by the Zurich Municipal Archives and covers one of the most exciting periods of Swiss Theatre History with the Schauspielhaus Zürich being the largest free stage in the German-speaking world during the Nazi period. In fact, many important actors and directors immigrated to Switzerland from Germany and Austria. With the help of these artists, the theater achieved great success, staging many anti-fascist works, importantly the world-premieres of several plays by Bertolt Brecht. After the war, the theater retained its important place in the theatre world, as it saw world premieres of important playwrights such as Max Frisch, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Carl Zuckmayer, Georges Schehadé, Botho Strauß, or Yasmina Reza (see: project description page; video of the project presentation; documentation on Wikidata).

Many recurring question during the hackathon were about the way ontology is expressed in Wikidata. This inspired Lucas Werkmeister to build a helpful tool on the spot: the Wikidata Ontology Explorer (video of the project presentation). Lucas also gave a one-hour Wikidata and SPARQL introduction during the hackathon.

Plenty of Data and Content Waiting for a Community to Take Care of Them!

With a certain regularity, the annual hackathon brings to the fore new collections and datasets that are potentially valuable to the Wikimedia community. As in the previous years, we counted about ten new photo collections that are worthy of uploading to Wikimedia Commons. In some cases, the institutions are taking care of this themselves, in others we still need to provide them with some guidance on how to go about it (as in the example described below). In preparation to the Wikdiata workshop, we have also carried out a census of datasets that would be good candidates for the ingestion into Wikidata. Among the approx. 110 open datasets about 15 are fit for ingestion. Some of them contain data about people (actors, dancers, writers, photographers, painters, politicians, etc.), others about historical monuments, heritage institutions, theatrical productions, or the world's animal and plant species. – There is an overwhelming influx of new data and content, which reminds us every year of the fact that getting the data is not enough, that we need to build communities around it, curate it and put it to some use!

One interesting set of images was imported to Wikimedia Commons during the hackathon: photos of historical medical instruments and other medical heritage from the collections of Lausanne's Institut universitaire d'histoire de la médecine et de la santé publique. It was the institution's first contribution to Wikimedia Commons.

The goal of this activity is to work with GLAM staff and serve as a liaison between the Archives and the Wikimedia community. Educating the GLAM employees and new Wikimedia users about Wikimedia projects, on how to upload files on Commons, which are release for public domain, as well on how to create new articles or improve the existing ones, using the books and materials from the Archives.

Wikipedia + Libraries project kicks off online training program w/ guidance from Wikipedians

September 13 -- WebJunction, OCLC's continuing education platform for library staff, officially launched the 9-week Wikipedia + Libraries online training program. The program enrolled nearly 300 library staff; the majority are from US public libraries, the target audience for the project. There are participants from 45 US states and 23 other countries. The first three weeks of the program included three live sessions. Here's what's been covered so far:

  • Wikipedia for you, your library, and your community
  • Evaluating Wikipedia with a critical eye
  • Contributing to Wikipedia

Each live session features a presentation by a library practitioner. To date, Bob Kosovsky (Kosboot), New York Public Library; János McGhie (McGhiever), Saint Paul Public Library; and Susan Barnum (Megalibrarygirl), El Paso Public Library have shared their Wikipedia experiences with course participants in guest presentations.

The remaining six weeks of the training program will include three more live sessions and participants will develop plans for implementing Wikipedia engagement that will benefit their communities.

Presently, course materials are only accessible to course participants; enrollment is now closed. However, by the project's conclusion in the spring of 2018, curriculum and training materials generated will be consolidated, curated and hosted on WebJunction for open access and at no cost to users under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 license.

Wikipedians are guides to course participants

Course successes so far have been possible thanks to the efforts of volunteer Wikipedians, many of whom are library staff or work with cultural institutions. These Wikipedians joined the course specifically as guides to give a human face to Wikipedia and to answer questions and cheer on participants as they begin to explore Wikipedia in the course. How to run an edit-a-thon?

Survey about GLAM uploads to Wikimedia Commons

The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) has created a survey for people involved in GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) media upload projects to Wikimedia Commons. Please consider filling out the survey, if you are currently participating in a GLAM batch upload project, or have participated in one in the past! Completing the survey takes 10-15 minutes.

The survey results will be used to understand how the Wikimedia Foundation can improve its support for these important projects - in the project Structured Data for Wikimedia Commons, and beyond. We are interested in learning more about the media collections that are donated, the tools people use to prepare and upload files, and the overall experience of donating media from GLAM organizations to Wikimedia Commons.

The survey data will be collected and stored under the terms of WMF's survey privacy statement <https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/GLAM_Donation_Survey_Privacy_Statement>.

We hope to receive responses from Wikimedia community members and staff at very diverse organizations - geographically, in terms of size and focus!

  • Conversations with Internet Archive, DPLA, Europeana, UNESCO and a number of other orgs in the heritage space
  • Interviews with GLAMs who have embedded Wikidata into their institutional catalogues for an upcoming blog post.
  • Support of several organizations considering developing Wikipedian in Residence roles.
  • Sandra at Swiss cultural data hackathon
  • Consultations with volunteers who want new skills or support for GLAM projects in Europe, North America and Latin America
