History of the Paralympic Movement in Australia/Wikimedians to the Games/Rules
Timeframe
Articles created or edited in the period 10 January to 20 April 2012 will be eligible to earn points. The four contributors with the highest number of points at 5 PM Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) on 20 April 2012 will become the semi-finalists with the chance to cover the 2012 London Paralympic Games. The APC will apply for media accreditation for each of these four semi-finalists for London 2012. The points for these four semi-finalists will then re-set. Using the same points system, the two semi-finalists with the highest number of points at 5 PM AEST on 30 June 2012 will be offered the opportunity to cover the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, paid by the APC and Wikimedia Australia (see Conditions below).
Eligibility
Wikipedians and Wikinews contributors who are Australian residents during the period of the competition are eligible to participate in this incentive program.
The following are ineligible to participate in this incentive program:
- Members of the staff of the Australian Paralympic Committee and their families;
- Members of the Board of Wikimedia Australia, their families and residents of their households; and
- Members of the arbitration panel (see “Final Arbitration” below).
The incentive project is for individual contributors. Groups of people who create or edit and submit articles under the name of a single contributor will not be eligible.
Conditions
Flights for winners will be from the nearest state or territory capital city.
The APC and Wikimedia Australia will not be responsible for arranging or securing necessary visas or travel permissions. By entering the incentive program, participants are declaring that they will be available to be in London during the period of the London 2012 Paralympic Games (29 August to 9 September 2012) and for sufficient days on each side of the Games for travel.
The APC and Wikimedia Australia will choose the airline and the accommodation. If possible, the winners will be accommodated with members of the Australian external media contingent for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
Winners will be given a cash allowance to cover meals and local travel.
The incentive awards are not transferable and must be taken by the contributor who wins the award.
The winners of the incentive program will be required to create Wikipedia and Wikinews articles during the Games about the London 2012 Paralympic Games, assisting in developing timely and topical Paralympic-related content. The APC will assist the winners to collaborate with each other, the APC’s media and communications team and external Australian media representatives to help provide the broadest possible coverage of the event across a range of media channels.
A person is only eligible for each incentive item once. Completion of multiple articles/categories will not result in multiple items being sent to a person.
Content eligibility
Eligible articles and content
The fundamental rule of eligibility is that articles must meet Wikipedia’s requirements for publication. Articles must also be about one of the following:
- Australia at the <YEAR> Paralympics – articles about Australia at any of the recognised summer and winter Paralympic games.
- Australian Paralympic competitors – articles about any Australian Paralympian.
- Australian national sport teams in a current or past Paralympic sport – such as the Australian women’s wheelchair basketball team.
- Any list or article title "<SPORT> at <YEAR> Summer/Winter Paralympics" where Australia has won a medal.
- Articles relating to the history of the Paralympic movement in Australia.
- The Australian Paralympic Committee or the Australian Confederation of Sport for the Disabled.
- Articles about individuals who have been important in the development of Paralympic sport in Australia. Those individuals must be notable enough for entry in Wikipedia, according to the notability standards determined by the Wikipedia community.
- General articles or articles about the Australian Team at the 2000 Summer Paralympics hosted in Sydney.
- Articles about the bid for the 2000 Summer Paralympics.
- General articles about Paralympic or disability sport on a list created by the HOPAU project coordinators (see http://hopau.ucniss.net/2011/07/welcome.html). These articles include such topics as classification and sports that Australia competes in at the Paralympics.
Ineligible articles
- General articles about Paralympic or disability sport that are not on the list created by the HOPAU project coordinators.
- General Paralympic Games articles by year.
- Articles about bids to host the Paralympic Games, except articles about the bid for the 2000 Summer Paralympics.
- 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games that primarily focus on a nation other than Australia at the Sydney Paralympics.
- General Paralympic articles.
- International sport organisation articles.
Earn points
The selection of Wikimedians to attend the 2012 Summer Paralympics will be based on a points system. The two individuals with the most points accumulated between 20 April 2012 and 30 June 2012 will be invited to attend the London 2012 Paralympic Games. If one of those two people cannot attend, the individual with the next highest number of points will be invited to attend, and so on until two people have been found who can attend.
Beyond earning the most points, the selected Wikimedians need to have been credited with at least one Good Article on English Wikipedia and published one story on Wikinews.
The points system is:
DYK
2 points for creating or expanding an article that appears as a DYK. The expanded/new article creator must be named in the DYK nomination. A maximum of 25% of a person's total points can be from this point type.
Good Articles
15 points for successfully ushering an eligible article in English or German or French through the Good Article (GA) process as a contributor. (See lists of eligible and ineligible articles for more details.) To receive 15 points, the contributor must have had substantial editorial involvement in the article, and participated in the review. Fifteen points each may be awarded to a maximum of two people where they have collaborated in the production of an article. Where a Good Article results from collaboration of more than two people, those people will be eligible for a proportional share of 30 points. If the article is subsequently delisted, the points will be taken away.
To be eligible, all entrants must submit at least one GA before 20 April 2012 and achieve GA status before 30 June 2012.
Good Article Reviewing
2 points for reviewing a sport related article that is not connected to the Paralympic movement or disabled sport. The purpose of including this is to prevent any potential backlog as a result of people nominating articles related to this content improvement effort. Any article that undergoes a review, with the reviewer's decision being overturned will result in a loss of points. This is only available to articles written in English. A maximum of 25% of a person's total points can be from this point type when combined with featured pictures/sounds.
Featured List
15 points for successfully ushering an eligible list in English or German or French through the Featured List (FL) process as a nominator or co-nominator. (See lists of eligible and ineligible articles for more details.) If the list is subsequently delisted, the points will be taken away.
Featured Article
50 points for successfully ushering an eligible article in English or German or French through the Featured Article (FA) process as a nominator or co-nominator. (See lists of eligible and ineligible articles for more details.) If the article is subsequently delisted, the points will be taken away.
5 points for successfully ushering an eligible article in Chinese or Dutch or Italian or Indonesian or Polish or Portuguese or Russian or Spanish through the Featured Article (FA) process as a nominator or co-nominator. (See lists of eligible and ineligible articles for more details.) If the article is subsequently delisted, the points will be taken away.
Featured Pictures/Sounds
1 point for getting a picture or sound listed as featured on Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia which can be used to demonstrate how a sport is played, give insight into classification, or be usable for a biography with an eligible article. Pictures and sounds must be of or about Australian Paralympic athletes or officials. A maximum of 25% of a person's total points can be from this point type when combined with Good Article Reviewing. Pictures are only eligible for points once and double points will not be allocated for getting media featured on both Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
5 points for taking a picture of Australian Paralympic athlete at an international event and getting the picture listed as featured on Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia. A maximum of 25% of a person's total points can be from this point type when combined with Good Article Reviewing. Pictures are only eligible for points once and double points will not be allocated for getting media featured on both Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
Wikinews
2 points for writing a news article about Paralympic sport in Australia, the Australian Paralympic Committee, or Australia’s preparation for the Paralympic Games and having it appear on the main page of Wikinews. A maximum of 25% of a person's total points can be from points in this category.
To be eligible, all entrants must contribute at least one Wikinews article before 20 April 2012.
Additional points
Wikimedia Australia and the APC may conduct workshops and/or edit-a-thons during the project period and may decide to allocate points for participation at those workshops. Attendance at these workshops will earn entrants 5 points for each workshop up to a maximum of 10 points. Entrants who travel more than 300 km to attend (including from Sydney) will earn the maximum 10 points from attending one such activity. Travel grants may be available through Wikimedia Australia to travel to Canberra to attend these workshops.
Wikimedia Australia and the APC may decide to introduce categories for additional points during the competition period if they are relevant to achieving the aims of the project. Points will be lost for any Good Article, Featured Article or Featured List that gets delisted. This is to protect against collusion whereby contributors may offer to pass good articles for each other to gain points.
Resources
Contributors to the project have access to several resources. Providing access to these resources is important in terms of content development and brings the APC project into line with GLAM projects that have provided exclusive and non-exclusive access to materials to people who have worked on articles related to their projects.
Press Passes
After a contributor has published one or more articles related to the Australian Paralympic movement on Wikinews or had one or more items featured on Wikipedia's “In the News”, or had an image they took related to Australian Paralympic sport featured on Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia, they can request a press pass to attend Australian Paralympic related events. While the APC cannot guarantee a press pass to all applicants, it will make every effort to secure passes for contributors to this project.
Photo Requests
The Australian Paralympic Committee has a number of photos that it is in the process of scanning and uploading to Wikimedia Commons. Contributors may request pictures to help illustrate Good Articles, Featured Articles, and Featured Lists. If an image exists, an effort will be made to prioritise the scanning of this material.
Paralympic Wikipedia Training Sessions
The Australian Paralympic Committee has hosted one workshop to introduce the Australian Paralympic community to the HOPAU project. There are plans to host more of these workshops around Australia. Any participants will be invited to attend these workshops.
The APC and Wikimedia Australia are working with the National Sports Information Centre (NSIC – see below) to offer workshops and/or edit-a-thons at the NSIC in Canberra for entrants. Additional points may be available to people who attend those workshops.
Announcements will be posted to the Wikimedia Australia mailing list, and to the Wikiversity project page.
National Sport Information Centre
The National Sport Information Centre (NSIC) in Canberra has books, journals, magazines, government reports, annual reports and Paralympic scrapbooks that are not available online. This content is often listed in the catalogue of the NSIC. Upon request for specific materials, the material can be scanned and e-mailed to the contributor. The material can also be copied and snail mailed to an individual.
The National Sport Information Centre also has a large selection of videos. Contributors will be given access to these videos and will be allowed to watch them at the NSIC.
Online Resources
As part of this project, a list of online resources will be posted that contributors can easily access. This includes links to IPC material, APC material, links to state and national disabled sport organisations.
Final arbitration
The APC and Wikimedia Australia shall each nominate one person to an arbitration panel.
Members of the arbitration panel may not receive points in the incentive project.
In the event of any query or dispute about the terms and conditions of the “Wikipedians to the Games” project, the arbitration panel will have the only and final say.
The arbitration panel will recommend the winners of the incentive project to the APC and Wikimedia Australia, based on this document.
