MediaWiki talk:Sidebar

Latest comment: 4 years ago by Pine in topic More localization via translatewiki
This page is not frequently watched or visited. Please go to the Village pump to request a change.

Should search be right at the top? Clearly where it was is unacceptable, but I'm not sure I like splitting up the sidebar sections so unevenly...  — Mike.lifeguard | @meta 04:02, 7 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Let's please discuss further changes to the layout here before applying them -- the frequent sidebar changes make it hard to navigate. Thanks,--Eloquence (talk) 01:20, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Changing user name

edit

Is changing your user name really such a frequent activity that we need to advertise it in the Sidebar? Let's try and keep the Sidebar clean. If there are no objections, I will remove it in a day.//Hannibal (talk) 07:30, 18 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I agree. We don't need a link to an admin noticeboard either, really. This wiki is small enough that we should probably use the village pump for all such issues.--Sage Ross (talk) 13:28, 18 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
How about we have a "Community" section with the admin noticeboard, village pump and username changes? Regards, Rock drum (talk · contribs) 14:40, 18 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I've been bold and removed the two links. I agree that the village pump is a good place to ask for things like this. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 14:57, 18 May 2011 (UTC) Reply
OK, perhaps we could add links at the top of the Village pump that are slightly more noticeable for any username changes / admin noticeboard? Thehelpfulone (talk) 16:07, 18 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
We are small enough that the village pump should replace all of the various noticeboards. We don't want to make things any more bureaucratic then they need to be --Guerillero 00:17, 19 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

To be able to localize sidebar, I intend to replace first and last parts of sidebar items to names that do not match the names of landing pages. By way:

* item-url|item-text

See meta:MediaWiki:Sidebar as example.

Current template:

*SEARCH
*Navigation
** mainpage|mainpage-description
** recentchanges-url|recentchanges
** Commons:Special:UploadWizard|uploadbtn
** Wikimedia:Village pump|villagepump-text

*Projects
** GLAM-url|GLAM-text
** education-url|education-text

*Resources
** bookshelf-url|bookshelf-text
** translation-url|translation-text
** skillset-url|skillset-text
** team-url|team-text
** chatrooms-url|chatrooms-text

--Kaganer (talk) 14:45, 30 June 2014 (UTC)  Y Done. Requests to localizations is welcomed!--Kaganer (talk) 16:22, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Discussion

Здравствуйте, Kaganer. Thank you for preparing the sidebar for localization. Could you please explain why some of the links in the sidebar (education, translation, skillset, team) now say "-text" and some (GLAM, bookshelf, chatrooms) do not? For example, the link to the GLAM page only says "GLAM," although the code says "GLAM-url|GLAM-text", but the link to the Education page says "education-text," although the code is structured in the same way: "education-url|education-text". I'm sorry, not all messages were created. Now everything is ready. --Kaganer (talk) 16:55, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
No worries. These things are complicated. :) Looks like just one more little detail needs tweaking, and I'd do it myself, but I'm not sure how and don't want to break it! Under Resources, the link to "Outreach team" needs a "c" in "Outreach." Thanks again, Kaganer. Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 19:24, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

More localization via translatewiki

edit

MediaWiki:Sidebar should be directly translatable as much as possible, preferably without intervention of holders of advanced administrative privileges. Such possibility exists with globally translatable messages at translatewiki.net.

Local translation of MediaWiki definitions/IDs/messages often isn't the best option, since (1) local translations couldn't be used directly by the other projects of the WMF, (2) addition of local translations (and maintenance) is harder — limited to a small group of users.

MediaWiki:Portal (Village pump) definition should be used instead of the Village pump, since that message is already globally translated in many languages (some 397 codes).

MediaWiki:Portal and MediaWiki:Portal/en should be set to Village pump, in order not to change the current name of the local Community portal, and other current translations could be saved by moving into the Portal scheme (the local translations wouldn’t have any global effect, but the use of MediaWiki:Portal is then limited in use for that part of the Outreach Wiki’s Sidebar:

In the Resources section:

In the Contact section:

Should be added in the Contact section:
** https://store.wikimedia.org/ | wikimediashoplink-linktext
** sitesupport-url|sitesupport

Also should be added before the toolbox section:
* Wikibase-otherprojects
** commons:Main Page | wikibase-otherprojects-commons
** mediawikiwiki:MediaWiki | wikibase-otherprojects-mediawiki
** metawikipedia:Main Page | wikibase-otherprojects-meta
** species:Main Page | wikibase-otherprojects-species
** wikidata:Wikidata:Main Page | wikibase-otherprojects-wikidata
** https://www.wikibooks.org/ | wikibase-otherprojects-wikibooks
** wikimania:Wikimania | wikibase-otherprojects-wikimania
** https://www.wikinews.org/ | wikibase-otherprojects-wikinews
** https://www.wikipedia.org/ | wikibase-otherprojects-wikipedia
** https://www.wikiquote.org/ | wikibase-otherprojects-wikiquote
** https://wikisource.org/ | wikibase-otherprojects-wikisource
** https://www.wikiversity.org/ | wikibase-otherprojects-wikiversity
** https://www.wikivoyage.org/ | wikibase-otherprojects-wikivoyage
** https://www.wiktionary.org/ | wikibase-otherprojects-wiktionary
** incubator:Incubator:Main Page | Project-localized-name-incubatorwiki
** betawikiversity:Main Page | Project-localized-name-betawikiversity

Some globally translatable messages are not used globally, like translatewiki:MediaWiki:Bw-sidebar-projects, translatewiki:MediaWiki:Bookshelf/en, some of which would fit perfectly with Outreach Wiki.

Thanks in advance for considering these updates. Best wishes. -- Nesmir Kudilovic (talk) 19:51, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
