TED - Ideas worth spreading has started a collaboration with the GLAM-Wiki community based on their database of 2000+ conference talks. They have been publishing these talks for a long time and recently started transcribing them and translating them with a worldwide network of volunteers. The collaboration, which was initiated and supported by Wikimedian Shani Evenstein, includes a Wikipedian in Residence program, starting February 2016, for the duration of 6 months. For that purpose, TED have contracted two Wikipedians in Residence (WiR), Jane Darnell and Andy Mabbett, to work on expanding TED-related content on Wikimedia project and help extend their reach into multi-lingual communities. A WiR is an experienced Wikipedian, who works as such, inside an institution, much like an artist in residence, though in this case, both WiR will be working remotely.

This means that Jane Darnell and Andy Mabbett are paid by TED, to act as advocates among its staff, partner organisations, members, the Wikimedia community, and the general public, to encourage them to improve the coverage of TED-related topics in Wikipedia, Wikidata, and sister projects run by the Wikimedia Foundation, and other initiatives with an "open content" ethos. Jane and Andy will create meaningful opportunities for the Wikimedia community to map TED content to that of Wikipedia and other projects in order to further our common goal of expanding the body of open knowledge available to the general public.

Goals at outset of the project (February 2016)

edit
  • Setting up a logo and relevant templates
  • listing missing articles, about TED speakers, or topics where TED Talks provide an important resource of information.
  • making sure content is covered in WikiData
  • A workshop for TED employees, to engage staff with the project, to be part of the process, better understand how the Wikipedia community works, know what to expect and how they can assist.
  • Training TED staff to edit Wikipedia
  • Engaging TED volunteer communities in the process, such as TEDx and the TED Open Translation Project (including putting them in touch with their local Wikimedia chapters)
  • Encouraging international cooperation and the translation of articles
  • Running public engagement events ("Editahons”)
  • Speaking at events
  • Explaining what "open content" means in this context, what the projects are, and how they work
  • Supporting existing contributors to the projects, in improving coverage of TED-related content
  • Training people to edit Wikipedia, Wikidata and other projects
  • Advocating and explaining the use of open licences
  • Giving talks to interested groups
  • Writing guest blog posts or articles
  • Encouraging the use of Wikimedia projects by TED staff, volunteers, speakers and partners
  • Encouraging the reuse of content from Wikimedia projects

The column "Trans" indicates whether for that language translated titles were added to Wikidata from the TED data donation (Y=Yes). Note that for those languages for which the Listeria bot is available, I have created lists in my userspace for both the TED speakers and the TED talks. Don't see your language? Add a request for your language on the Talk page and I will make lists and update the table.

Data visualisation: Birthplaces of TED speakers

edit

One thing we can show now we have the data, is a map of the birthplaces of TED speakers with a Sparql query that will update in real time: here. Currently the query only processes about 900 items because we don't have birthplaces for all speakers yet.
