Question about TEDx talks

Q: In Armenia we organize TEDx , can I include those speakers in TED competition?

• • A: Here is the TEDx Wikidata item and if you check "What links here" or click on the Reasonator link, then you can see all the TEDx talks on Wikidata, which are generally the winners from TEDx competitions or promotions. The main thing to remember is that the Youtube videos are not in the data donation, only the TED.com videos. You can also search for the speaker on TED.com and if there is a bio there under TED.com/speakers then you can write about the person in the competition (note you don't have to link to that bio in your Wikipedia article, it's just a check for the data). I did ask and if there are videos on TED.com that we don't yet have in Wikidata, then you can create an item for them and use it in the competition. Jane023 (talk) 07:00, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

New names?

Hi! Can we add new names to the articles list? It just names of TED talks or are welcome names from TEDX talks? As I participate in TEDX talks here in Argentina, I feel that many names can be add ;) Let me know! Hugs! NitalaPansera (talk) 13:05, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Yes Nitala you can add items for speakers and talks, but there is a restriction in that they must be listed as well on the TED.com website. There have been over 40,000 talks total, including many TEDx talks, but this challenge only involves the top talks posted on the TED.com website. You can search for speakers from this set on Wikidata or on the TED.com/speakers website. Jane023 (talk) 16:03, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

We have an exception for Ishita Katyal - someone made an article in the challenge for her and she did speak at the main TED event of 15 February 2016, but as of today her talk has still not been published and she also still doesn't have a speaker id. We do know she is listed in the lineup of speakers though, so this link is enough to count her in the dataset: here. Jane023 (talk) 13:51, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

German Wikipedia

No Germans are playing, but we have flagged revisions there. IMHO it can only give points a participant, if the revision was accepted.--Kopiersperre (talk) 19:47, 25 June 2016 (UTC)

Commons /adding new pictures

The rules say 10 points for "Expanding any Wikipedia article by adding the first photo of a speaker, that you created and uploaded to Commons during the competition." Does create mean here "taken yourself with a camera"? Or does it mean something like "found in the public domain" for example? I have for example uploaded two pictures of Nathalie Cabrol to commons (there weren't any pictures of her yet). I had found these NASA-pictures in the public domain. Does this mean I "created" these pictures? Or does that only apply to taking photographs yourself? Ecritures (talk) 10:19, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

Link TED talk to speaker

what is the best way to link a TED talk in wikidata to the actual speaker? Ecritures (talk) 13:46, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

Actually Andy and I were supposed to complete this work and I believe all talks now have a speaker they link to (we created lots of speaker items). The speaker items don't link to their talk items, but instead link to their TED speaker id numbers. This is a problem for speakers who gave talks in 2016 and for whom there is no TED speaker id yet. We obtained permission however to use the person's lineup in a 2016 TED event to prove they are worthy of the competition. --Jane023 (talk) 11:32, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

Pam/Pamela Warhurst

On the (Dutch) list of TED speakers the link to Pam Warhurst (TED speaker id 1399) links to Wikidata item Q23662584. It seems there already was a Wikidata item for this person under Pamela Warhurst (Q7129276). Since this Wikidata item links to a page in the English wikipedia, I have moved the TED speaker ID to this last Wikidata item. I have no idea how the first (now superfluous) Wikidata item has to be removed. Ecritures (talk) 09:38, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks! I merged the item. You can merge Wikidata items by selecting the "More" tab. Always merge into the lower (older) Q number. Thanks for spotting this and trying to fix it! We have had to merge lots of TED speaker items, but this one is a puzzle since I thought we had checked all enwiki articles. Jane023 (talk) 21:21, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

TED's Flickr

Is there a reason why TED isn't making its own images Commons-compatible? czar 02:45, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

Apparently they can't because they decided on their "non-derivative" licensing policy years ago and are now even in a position where they don't own the licenses of material that is created now (!) so they also can't release the content. It would be nice if they got their act together going forward, but apparently that is too complicated. I was thinking maybe we could reach out to attendees who take lots of pictures and make it easy for them to upload their own photos. That is still not great, but better than nothing.
