Talk:Wikipedia Education Program/Education Program Leaders Workshop 2013

Preliminary agenda

edit

Here are some thoughts on a preliminary agenda:

  • Introductions (30 min)
  • 5-minute presentations from established programs (60 min)
  • How can we be better about sharing learnings and documenting our work? (30 min)
  • How can WMF be better about mentoring programs/how can we create a shared community where we mentor each other? (60 min)
  • What models exist for starting programs. How do these models scale? (60 min)
  • How do we measure success? (60 min)

We're open to other thoughts/ideas/etc.! -- LiAnna Davis (WMF) (talk) 01:23, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, LiAnna. I think those are great topics to cover! I think we can begin to invite people who are going to attend the workshop to already begin to share their thoughts. I'll talk about Brazil, trying to cover the main issues of the topics you outline above. :) --Ezalvarenga (talk) 17:12, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'd like to discuss the interaction between the Education Program, OER more widely and Open Access. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 03:29, 20 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Pizza, Wikipedia and Education!

Pizza, Wikipedia and Education!

Hi all, here is Tom, who is coordinating the Education Program in Brasil as an independent consultant of Wikimedia Foundation. Since I am going to this great workshop LiAnna and Rod are organizing, I would like to propose a meeting following this one, Pizza, Wikipedia and Education!

It would be great to gather all Wikimedians attending to the Wikimedia Conference who are interested on the Wikipedia Education Program or other uses of Wikimedia projects for educational purposes. Last year, during the Wikimedia in DC, it was a wonderful surprise to see so many people interested in the Education Program, willing to discuss about it and share their experiences.

I love the idea on that red t-shirt "Wikimedia belongs to education" and this is a great opportunity for we talk to each other about that. And, why not, also eat some pizza while discussing. :) Would our Italian friends have some suggestion of places we could go for that?

I don't know if there is something planned already for the night of 18 April, then there is no problem to change the meeting place also, if necessary. Arrivederci! --Ezalvarenga (talk) 17:33, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tom! I think Wikimedia Italia is organizing a welcome reception that evening that everyone will be encouraged to attend. Stay tuned to m:Wikimedia Conference 2013 for more details. -- LiAnna Davis (WMF) (talk) 18:13, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi, LiAnna. Perfect. It would be great to meet everybody anywhere to discuss education. I tried to check if there was something before, for this I said if there is something happening on 18 April at night, we can simply change places. The important is to gather all these people! --Ezalvarenga (talk) 18:18, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

There will be a welcome event this time, then we can discuss there and maybe ask some pizza. ;D --Ezalvarenga (talk) 13:00, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikikids/Vikidia

edit

Hi,

Thanks for organizing this event, which is not so far away for me !

I would be glad to give an introduction of the Wikikids/Vikidia project. Vikidia is an existing equivalent of Wikipedia for 8 to 13 years old children in french (I opened it), while Wikikids is both the name of the proposal to the WMF to open such a project, and a such wiki in dutch. You will find more details on m:Wikikids.

I think that sticking to Wikipedia may lead to miss the needs of younger pupils and miss the opportunity not only to read it as a resource, but to make assignments just as student make some. That is to reach younger pupils un the wiki education opportunities. Two wiki encyclopedic for children are doing well for now, which prove the sustainability of the concept, and I think that it has proved to be very profitable to children (that write themselves on our guest-book that they love it and appreciate the content to be more affordable that the wikipedia's). I would be glad to tell about it, how it works, the questions it raises (is it for or by children, how roles are allotted among children, teenager and adults...)

The current proposal it for the existing projects (at least Vikidia in french, spanish and italian) to be adopted as a sister project by the WMF, just as Wikivoyage was, and to consider then opening and developing new ones or in other languages. It has by now quite few feed-back and international awareness and involvement, whereas it has some support including from people in the WMF and quite officially from Wikimédia France.

May I make a 30 mn introduction to this project during our meeting ? Astirmays (talk) 12:48, 21 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Astirmays, thanks for the introduction! I'm afraid if we give a few programs the chance to do a 30-minute introduction, that would be all we do! And we have some pretty significant goals for this workshop. I also want to shy away from presentations and instead keep it very discussion-focused. What I've put together on the agenda is a 5-minute introduction for each person, and then a 90-minute period at lunch where people can more informally have discussion periods, and a talk about Wikikids/Vikidia is exactly the kind of thing we're envisioning for that. I hope that works for you. -- LiAnna Davis (WMF) (talk) 23:21, 26 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
