Become a Wikipedia Editor

This course will be offered through the Bethlehem (NY) School District's Adult and Continuing Education program in Spring 2020. It is designed to encourage knowledgeable individuals to contribute to Wikipedia (for a start) and to build a local community of Wikipedians.

There are a large number of retired professionals in this area, as well as those who are not yet of retirement age. They may be interested in providing value to others by contributing to Wikipedia. I hope that they might also encourage others to become involved. There is not an extended mission statement for the Adult and Continuing Education program that I could find, but they do have a motto, "Work Hard, Play Hard, Learn Forever." I think this class will fit in!

How This Project Adds Value to the Community

I have had trouble identifying Wikipedians in the Albany, NY area, but believe there is great potential. There are many institutions of higher education in the area, and many retired educators who might be interested in participating. There is also a graduate program of information science, as well as an undergraduate informatics program at the local university. These students might be interested in learning more. However, outreach and the opportunity to enroll will not be limited to these audiences, so I think there could be wider engagement and learning about participation in building Wikipedia.

I am  a librarian at the University at  Albany (and a Slingerlands resident), and I have a BCSD Continuing Education course being offered this spring, "Start Contributing to Wikipedia" (https://www.bethlehemschools.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/69614-BCSD-Cont-Ed-Spring-2020.pdf  page 8). If there is sufficient enrollment, it will begin April 21. I am writing for two reasons:

1. While this is being offered by the School District and not the Library, I wonder if there might be any way to promote the class through the Library? Library users would be excellent potential Wikipedia contributors. Is there a bulletin board where I might post information? Are there any other ways to promote it there?

2. If the course gets sufficient enrollment to proceed, there might be queries connected to the Wikipedia article research learners will be doing in the course, and I thought I would give a heads-up about this. The class is limited to 15 students, and runs for just three weeks.
