Project goal edit

The Wikipedia course for Igbo language lecturers and students in Alvan Ikoku College of education project will teach them how to use Wikimedia projects as a teaching tool to empower their students to add open educational resources in the Igbo language, as well as add content about Igbos and their culture.

This project will improve the quality of education in the Linguistic department, empower the students and lecturers to be digitally literate and also make knowledge available in the Igbo language for people that are not fortunate to acquire formal education to access knowledge relevant to them.

Problem statement/Advocacy message edit

Statement edit

Igbo language and culture is our identity; Our history, culture and language should not disappear. It should be documented and freely accessed by anyone. Also, the less privileged in the remote areas of Igboland should know about the world and be literate through access to all forms of knowledge in Igbo, the language they understand.

Evidence edit

The Igbo Wikipedia has approximately 1500 articles, and most of them are biographies, which does not sum up the world knowledge, neither does it reflect our history and culture. Also, it is predicted by UNESCO that the Igbo language will go into extinction in the year 2050 if we don't embrace our language and culture.

Example edit

The Igbo Wikimedians User Group, an affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation is making efforts to promote Igbo language and culture through projects targeted at adding content in Wikimedia platforms to provide Online Educational Resources in the Igbo language.

Action Desired edit

So as educationists and students in Igbo language discipline. We must learn how we can harness Online Educational Resources (OERs) as well as contribute to OERs using the Igbo Wikipedia as our platform.
