GLAM-Wiki Conference, 16-18 Nov 2023, Montevideo, Uruguay
The GLAM-Wiki international conference was held in Uruguay's capital, Montevideo, from November 16 to 18.
Kamila Neuman, Open Culture Manager at Wikimedia Poland offered two activities as part of the conference.
The first was a workshop “Sharing is caring, but who cares?” How can we tap into the collective knowledge & experience in the GLAM-Wiki movement The workshop was part of a broader discussion on effective ways to share knowledge within the movement, and was well attended, as about 30 people participated in groups to consider what participants' personal motivations for sharing knowledge are and what ways to learn from others are most effective. At the end, each group shared their thoughts, and Kamila concluded the workshop by encouraging us to reflect on the easiest and simplest steps we can take after the conference to better benefit from shared knowledge and experiences in GLAM-Wiki. Wikimedia Poland's second activity at the conference was a presentation as part of a joint panel on GLAM-Wiki case studies around the world, which took place in the main conference hall. During the session titled Do's and Don'ts in GLAM-Wiki: Lessons Learned from a Fresh Perspective, Kamila presented her thoughts after two years of working in the GLAM-Wiki field, the aim of which was to make the audience reflect more deeply on their own lessons learned from working with GLAM institutions. Find out Kamila's impressions of the conference: This is my first experience of attending an international GLAM-Wiki conference and it will definitely remain in my memory for a long time. It is remarkable to meet people from all over the world who are involved in GLAM-Wiki activities, especially since we work rather separately from each other on a daily basis and only meet on such rare occasions. I believe immensely, and my experiences at the conference only confirm this, that there is great power in the relationships and conversations that allow us to get to know each other and our work better. This is also what my workshop was about, where I wanted to see what motivations we have to share knowledge and experiences more regularly, so that we can also develop our relationships outside the conference meetings. And although the conference was very intense and passed quickly, I believe that such live meetings will help us look for and develop effective ways to build a network of strengthening relationships afterwards. This is also what I want to dedicate some of my work to in the new year.
WikiMatejko editing action with the National Museum in Krakow
November is an intensive time of activities for the WikiMatejko editing action organized jointly with the National Museum in Krakow. The goal of the action was to enhance Wikipedia and its related projects with high-quality content, illustrations, and data related to the artist, Matejko, and his life and work.
A total of 23 participants and 10 Wikipedians as trainers joined the action. To prepare the participants, two online training sessions were conducted on November 7 and 9 by Wikipedian Tomasz Wrona, with 22 newcomers and novices taking part. The training sessions were recorded and made available to the participants. Additionally, a checklist of the next steps for the action was provided. On November 28, group online consultations were held, with 5 participants attending. Furthermore, the National Museum in Krakow supported the participants by providing subject-matter experts who assisted in finding sources and digital resources from the Muza database system to enhance the articles being developed.
What are the plans for December and January 2024? We want to publish new and expanded articles, start activities to create open educational resources based on content from Wikimedia projects, and encourage participants in the activities to translate articles and complete the Wikidata.
A few words from Kamila Neuman regarding the action: Cooperation with the National Museum in Cracow is constantly developing, and I'm very happy about that because we trust each other, which encourages us to try new things. One of them is the WikiMatejko editing campaign, which focuses on building engagement around the museum's collection among the museum's audience, mainly students, and involving them in the community of new Wikipedia editors. We are already thinking about further initiatives to go one step further and increase access to open knowledge about art.
