Education/Archive/Historic data
Dear Colleagues,
In 2015, Wikipedia celebrated 15 years and the Wikipedia Education Program celebrated 5 years.[1][2] As we conclude 2015 and welcome 2016, we wish to recalculate our collective impact.
Wikipedia is being used as a teaching tool in education around the world in more than 80 countries worldwide. We know that these education programs exist, but in some cases, we know little more than that.
We are collecting historical data from all education programs to update our narrative and to communicate our contributions to the Wikimedia Movement and the world. This campaign will include each and every country that has participated in the Wikipedia Education Program, including those that have not been counted before.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your education program's historical data. In the coming months, we will analyze the data, incorporate feedback, and announce the campaign results. We look forward to working together with you to showcase and celebrate the collected results of our work. :)
Yours sincerely, Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 22:25, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

What?
edit- GOAL
The big hairy audacious goal of this campaign is to get as close as we can to a full, clear picture of what has happened with Wikimedia projects in education up to now in order to tell the story of the success of Wikipedia Education Programs worldwide so that participants can feel more connected within the global context.
- TARGETED OUTCOMES
- Participants will contribute to a global historical data collection campaign.
- Participants will gain a comprehensive data set by which to compare programs worldwide.
- Participants will learn that reporting local program data is valuable to the global program and the movement.
Why?
editWhy are we doing this? Within the Wikimedia Movement, measurement and evaluation of impact matters[3], and reflection upon and learning about process matters.[4] Yet, there has never been a comprehensive collection of historical education program data of this scope and scale.
For an education program session at Wikimania 2015[5], 16 education program leaders[6] shared great data about their programs.[7] When tallied[8] and formatted[9] (see slides 15-30), the collective impact of that data is impressive. [10] [11] But that was only a small part of the big picture.
There are plans[12] to develop tools that would automate the collection of some of this information. For example, an internationalized multi-language, multi-project dashboard along the lines of what the Wiki Education Foundation developed.[13] However, that dashboard only counts current contributions. It cannot count backward and collect historical data. Therefore, this process must be done manually.
The world needs to know how widespread the Wikipedia Education Program is and the full scope of the work we are doing worldwide. Plus, as we say on Wikipedia, {{citation needed}}
. :)
- PURPOSE
This purpose of this data collection campaign is fivefold: documentation, standardization, analysis, synthesis and storytelling.
DOCUMENTATION This data will help to document the education program's impact on Wikimedia projects. Information about who is doing what where will be easier to locate and learn from. This data will improve the education portal, allowing us to update Education/Dashboard and/or replace it a page like Education/Statistics.
STANDARDIZATION This data will help to standardize what data is collected and how data is presented, since this varies greatly from program to program. For example, compare the various data documentation from these programs: Argentina, Armenia, Estonia, México's Tec de Monterrey, México's UNAM, and Serbia.
ANALYSIS This data will allow for in-depth analysis and a better understanding of the reach of our work, our collective results, and our shared impact.
SYNTHESIS This data will allow for synthesis across programming landscapes: local, regional, global.
STORYTELLING This data will allow us to update our collective narrative, to communicate our contributions to the Wikimedia Movement, and to tell the story of the success of Wikimedia Education Programs worldwide. |
When?
editThe estimated timeline for this campaign is as follows:
- December 2015: Education program leaders receive data collection request
- January to March 2016: Education program leaders share historical program data on wiki
- April 2016: WMF analyzes the data and incorporates feedback
- May 2016: WMF announces the campaign results
