Adding New South Wales stories to Wikipedia
State Library of New South Wales, one of the oldest libraries in Australia hosted Wikpedian-in-Residence Whiteghost.ink for 14 weeks as part of a state-wide editing project. Individual training and guidance for staff is one of the great benefits of having a Wikipedian in Residence. One of the priorities for the Library was training staff in editing and in particular helping them to understand how the Wikipedia ‘ecosystem’ works. This included understanding how to interact with other editors and how articles in the encyclopaedia are interrelated.
Some examples of the work completed with the WiR include:
- Talk pages – negotiating changes to articles via talk pages allowed staff to create a new article for Australian artist Harriet Morgan, separating some of the information that had been in the existing article on her sister Helena Scott who was also an artist.
- List articles – staff created lists of the newspapers published in New South Wales and the NSW newspapers published in languages other than English.
- Categories in Wikimedia Commons – the First Fleet is the name given to the eleven ships that brought the first convicts and settlers to Australia from Great Britain in 1788, establishing the colony of New South Wales. Learning about the categories that apply to images about the First Fleet is helping with planning for future editing activities. These include
Wikimaps Tartu–Hong Kong
The Wikimaps project had come to a stage where it was possible to arrange an event around the tools and the topics of our project. In this project we want to take old maps to Wikimedia Commons, georeference them and make them findable. Then we want to create a world map with a time slider.
The first stop was in Tartu, Estonia. During the State of the Map Baltics we arranged a workshop with mappers from the Baltic countries. I had gathered a set of Tartu maps from Estonian archives to works with. The participants created ideas for reusing old maps or discussed the peculiarities of geographic information on old maps. Some of them had time to work with paper, scissors and glue.
The next gathering was in Wikimania, where we arranged a round table on the needs of geographically oriented Wikimedia projects. During the week, the toolset was ready to be tested. The Wikimaps Warper can now be used on Wikimedia Commons, and the resulting maps can be used in the Open Historical Map project. Have a look at the Wikimaps project page for advice.
In the end of the week OpenStreetMap celebrated their 9th Birthday with a code sprint and Wikimaps participated by having the results of the project available for experimentation.
Pompidou
Centre Pompidou partnership
A partnership between Wikimedia France and the Centre Pompidou is to be signed on September, the 18th by the president of the Centre Alain Seban and the chair of Wikimedia France Rémi Mathis.
A conference will be held this day about the relationship between amateurs and professionals and what Wikimedia-style projects can bring to a cultural institution. Three people will talk about collaborative work in the cultural field: Antonio Casilli (junior professor at Telecom Paristech), Henri Verdier (Director of Etalab - French government opendata facility), Louise Merzeau (junior professor à Paris X, sous réserve), chairing Gonzague Gauthier (digital projects manager, Centre Pompidou).
Workshops will be organized at the Centre Pompidou during the year 2013-2014 to write articles about the collections they hold (modern and contemporary art), the wikipedians being allowed to access the resources of the Centre, speak with curator, visit on closing days...
Two others conferences will take place in January and March 2014.

Let the GLAM shine! Planning the year 2014
GLAMster meet up in Hannover
10 Wikipedians and Wikimedia Deutschland staff discussed and exchanged experiences on their GLAM activities since March 2013, when we had our last meeting in Kaufbeuren. The focus was on the strategy for the coming year. It became obvious to us all, that working the GLAM field takes a long breath. We definitely need means to make it easier for beginners to edit the Wikipedia. Both the teahouse approach promoted by User:Bücherwürmlein and the cooperation with regional wikis as User:Hubertl suggested are considered, but also the creation of new learning tools. Next year the focus for Wikimedia Deutschland will be continously to enable and support GLAM initiatives of the Wikimedia-movement and to ease the publication of content under free licenses by consulting GLAM institutions and providing information. Thanks to User:Marcus Cyron we could round up the meeting by visiting the August Kestner Museum and the first photos of the archeological collection were taken and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. For more details in German on the meet up please check in the Wikipedia and read the blog.
Public broadcasting station ZDF meets Wikimedia
This month, Tim Moritz Hector, Wikipedian in Residence at "Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen" (check May report) and Barbara Fischer gathered with staff members of ZDF to provide them with closer insights into the Wikipedia universe. About two thirds of the participants of ZDFcheck, a collaborative format to check statements of politicians, are Wikipedians now and, for example, more than 30 info graphics were created and released under CC-BY-SA. Find more information on the project page of ZDFcheck and about the residency on the WMDE-Blog.
Wikipedian in Residence pilot project at the Bombay Natural History Society
Early this month, I completed a small pilot project at the Bombay Natural History Society located in Mumbai, India. Founded in 1883, the BNHS houses a treasure trove of specimens and research material on a wildlife, biodiversity, and conservation in India. After the BNHS evaluates the project, I hope that it would open its doors to the Wikimedia community for Wikipedian in Residence programmes and community activities.
As a part of the project, the English Wikipedia article on the late Humayun Abdulali, a naturalist of repute and a late functionary of the Society, was expanded using journals, magazines, and other reference material available online and at the BNHS. I found that very few reliable secondary references on the topic were available online, owing to which most citations were sourced from the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society and a semi-autobiographical book on Humayun Abdulali. I also shot and uploaded a few photos of specimens pertaining to the subject to the Wikimedia Commons. I was helped and supported by Wikimedians Shyamal, Ashwin Baindur, and Vickram Crishna in this project.
A comparison of the versions of the article before I started working on it and after its completion.
Wiki loves Monuments; Greek & Latin translations; Wikipedians in Residence
The worlds largest international photography competition has kicked off for the fourth time. Dutch volunteers keep on expanding the activities involved with the competition. This year it takes shape in a numbers of local activities, referred to as "Wiki Takes ...", in The Hague, Nijmegen and Groningen. There is also a larger number of monuments involved than ever before. The competition used to focus on national monuments, this year the municipal and provincial monuments are also included. A tool has been developed to generate lists with coordinates of monuments based on their address (example). Coordinates of monuments without a specific address have been added by hand.
Greek & Latin translations
The University of Amsterdam and the VU University Amsterdam organised a the "Summerschool Classics", a week for students, scholars, teachers and others interested in Greek and Latin literature. The participants had translated several epitaphs of 17th century sea heroes. Volunteers of WMNL assisted them with publishing their translations. Wikisource was being used to post the translations, photos were uploaded to Commons and brief descriptions of the graves, the text on the grave and the locations were added to Wikipedia pages.
Wikipedians in Residence
The National Library and National Archives of the Netherlands have hired Hay Kranen as the first Dutch Wikipedian in Residence. He will start his work on 7th October and will finish in July 2014. Project information can be found on the Wikipedia page. Two more positions for Wikipedians in Residence will be anounced shortly by the Group of Special Scientific Libraries. A fourth position should be open before the end of the year.
Interview of the Wikipedian in Residence at the Swiss National Archives
Wikipedian in Residence at the Swiss National Archives from the 1st July 2013
Micha Rieser (user: Micha L. Rieser) is the Wikipedian in Residence in the Swiss Federal Archive since the beginning of June and now shares some insights with us. Micha, active as Wikipedian since 2005, is on one hand counseling the Federal Archive regarding selected publications and on the other hand he’s sharing his treasure trove of experience with archivist in order to reveal possibilities on how to contribute to Wikim/pedia Projects in the long run.
- What are your tasks as Wikipedian in Residence in the Swiss Federal Archive?
I have a certain mediating- and consulting role. I am intermediating between the Wikimedia-Universe and the universe of the Swiss Federal Archive. I am consulting the Federal Archive regarding the selection and the publication of archived documents on the Wikimedia-platforms. I am also giving some advice to the employees of the Federal Archive in order to enable them as authors for Wikipedia. In general, I am sensitizing the Federal Archive for Wikipedia-relevant subjects and the interests of the community. Moreover I am consulting the Archive regarding the establishment of some processes for the time after my mandate, so that they can observe and accompany the activities and the use of their archived documents in Wikipedia on their own. Above all, I am also presenting the Swiss Federal Archive within the Wikipedian community, enable certain insights into the world of archives and depict how one can do his/her research. The aim is to motivate the Wikipedia-Community to advance certain Wikimedia- or Wikipedia-projects thanks to the newly discovered research possibilities and the availability of archived documents. The completion of biographies of certain politicians or artists as well as an improvement of historical articles about Switzerland - based on more consolidated findings - could for example be two such projects in Wikipedia. There will also be a linking from Wikipedia to the documents of the Federal Archive. It is aspired that the reader of a Wikipedia article immediately notices if there are further documents from the Federal Archive about the considered topic.
- Do you have to reach specific goals until the end of your residency?
No, there are no such specific targets of my residency. The goals are a result of the ongoing talks and discussions we have here. It was clear from the beginning that we’re not going to have some concrete targets. However, as a first reference point, 5000 photographs from the First World War were referred to as potential first upload. If the upload is possible, and not blocked due to legal reasons, this target could be understood as predefined. However, it makes only sense to pursue this goal if these photographs can be used for encyclopedical purposes and fit to a project. I am going to clarify this issue with Wikipedians. Due to the mentioned reasons, it’s possible that only a subset of these 5000 photographs will be uploaded – or worst case there won’t be any upload at all.
- With whom are you mainly working together? How can we imagine a day of yours as "Wikipedian in Residence"?
I am a subordinate in the department of “information-access” and residing within the services “information-offers”. However, I would like to mention that I am cooperating with lots of different departments within the Federal Archives – as long as working together makes sense and is beneficial. My every day work is very diverse and based on current needs. Part of my job was so far: Media relation, organizational issues, journalistic research, legal clarifications/copy right issues as well as preparation of presentations.
- Is there something that is totally different from what you’ve expected?
No, not until now.
- What are people from the Federal Archive appreciating most about having you ?
That is actually a question I would like the employees of the Federal Archive to answer. Furthermore I would like to wait until the end of my residency to draw such conclusions, as most of the employees will know me by then.
- You're active as a Wikipedian since 2005. How come you are now engaged as Wikipedian in Residence in the Federal Archive?
A colleague of mine, who also works at the Zurich Statistical Office, made me aware of this madate. I applied due to the fact that I am very interested in the world of archives (and GLAMS in general) and recognized that this residency would allow me a new perspective on my hobby as Wikipedian. As I work 60% for the Zurich Statistical Office, it was very easy for me to take over this new commitment without having the need to change anything in career terms.
- Can you already share some lessons with us from your first weeks? What is your advice for other future Wikipedians in Residence?
A Wikipedian in Residence must be very familiar with internal processes on Wikipedia and be proficient with basic rules and also the different views of community members. A Wikipedian in such a mandate must understand the superior goals of Wikipedia and of the other Wikimedia-projects. Therefore I see the need for some years of experience and of active participation in projects. Somebody that is only editing or uploading photographs sporadically and has not a lot of knowledge in copyright issues or has not built strong relations into the community, is not able to live up to expectations. The GLAM institution is counting on the competences of a Wikipedian in Residence and fully relies on its consulting. Such an institution doesn’t need an editor who only executes certain tasks, like for example uploads some predefined pictures.
- Why is it important for you personally that GLAM Institution in Switzerland are going to make their information accessible through Wikipedia respectively that there exist cooperations with GLAM institutions?
Wikipedia has a natural interest in objects which are possessed by GLAM institutions – and can be made accessible by them. There are already a lot of articles about these objects (f.ex. properties of museums) or based on these objects (as source material). However, the access to such goods was rather complicated in the past. Partly this was due to the fact that a lot of GLAM institutions were not yet able to understand the online-world and were furthermore strongly restricted by their own rules and regulations. That’s why in a lot of museums you can still see a sign, which tells you that it is forbidden to take photographs. Therefore it’s often still a big challenge to acquire visual material under a Creative-Commons-License for Wikipedia. On the top of that, the majority of museums are quite passive in their approach: There is a request needed from a Wikipedian for the release of each single picture. Obviously, a proactive manner of GLAMS for making this visual data accessible would be the desired way for Wikipedia. On the other side we may not forget that some of the most active Wikipedians have a non-academic past and first need to learn how to approach libraries and archives. With such a cooperation, the audience of libraries and archives can be easily enlarged through the Wikip/media community. And there’s an clear and immediate benefit for GLAM institutes: The attention for the GLAM documents can be risen when Wikipedia articles are linked to them. All in all I therefore would like to emphasize that a cooperation of GLAM institutes with Wikimedia-Projects enables win-win situations.
William Blake in Kansas? Beginnings.
Beach Museum, Blake Archive and documenting DH GLAM-Wiki
Alex Stinson (User:Sadads) gave a presentation at the at Kansas State University on "Thinking about Wikipedia and Academia" (PREZI available at this link). In the presentation he explored a group of 15 people related to the university and the Beach about how to approach Wikipedia and Wikipedia activities. The event hosted by Adrienne Russel of the US GLAM WIKI Consortium Advisory Board and the Public Programs Coordinator for the Beach Museum. The event is the first GLAM-Wiki event in Kansas (the previous NARA Editathon in Kansas City is in Missouri).
The presentation is the first part of Stinson's GLAM-Wiki internship with the Blake Archive William Blake Archive, a digital humanities project. The internship will be to explore using GLAM-Wiki with Digital Humanities projects and support further collaboration within the University, including on campus GLAMs, like the Beach Museum and the Library, and an Education Program assignment. The first in community update for the project is available at on English Wikipedia. Also, part of the internship is to improve documentation and communication of GLAM-Wiki activities to the Digital Humanities community. He is documenting the project at his blog: http://alexstinson.wordpress.com/
Open Access at Wikimania 2013 & 2014 and on the Main Pages; New mailing list
Open Access at Wikimania
Wikimania 2013 in Hong Kong was the largest real-life gathering of WikiProject Open Access so far, with about one third of its current members attending. Their main contribution to the Wikimania program was a dedicated panel that followed up on a similar one organized at an Open Access meeting in June in Geneva and addressed past, present and potential future interactions between the Open Access and Wikimedia communities. That included, for instance, the idea of an Open Access Button (see below) or that of signalling to Wikipedia readers and editors how openly a cited references is actually available (details). Naturally, Open Access to the scholarly literature was also touched upon in other sessions (e.g. the Science GLAM session or the multimedia roundtable) as well as at WikiSym, which was held in Hong Kong too this year, right before Wikimania.
At the Wikimania closing ceremony, the organizers of next year's Wikimania London announced that outreach to the Open Access community would be one of the central themes of the event. To coordinate activities around that, Stuart Lawson was designated as community liaison, and a project page set up for others to chime in.
Open Access Button
The OA Button is a browser-based tool currently under development which aims to track every time someone is denied access to a scholarly article (explained further in this blog post), and help people find open access versions instead. They are hoping to integrate this with Wikipedia somehow. A hackathon is taking place in London on 7-8 September.
Open Access puts new species on Wikimedia Main Pages
On August 15, a new mammalian species was formally described in the open-access journal ZooKeys: Bassaricyon neblina, the "olinguito". On the same day, Wikipedia articles on the subject had been started in eight languages, four of which displayed the news on their main pages: Catalan, English, Portuguese and Russian, with an article on the Polish Wikinews completing the picture. By now, the article exists in over 40 languages and has been featured – with image – on the main pages of multiple Wikipedias (as, ca, en, es, fi, fr, he, hu, in, ms, nl, pt, ru, sv, ta, tl, uk, zh) and of Wikispecies, with additional entries in Wiktionaries (en, fr), and Wikinews (eo).
Few newly described species (or taxa more generally, for that matter) receive that much attention from the Wikimedia community – other examples include the frog Paedophryne amauensis (30 Wikipedia languages) or the chameleon Brookesia micra (27) – but those who do have usually been described in open-access journals. Overall, 20 files taken directly or adapted from the original research article about the "olinguito" are available on Commons, of which 14 have been used a total of 112 times. This is the kind of reuse of open-access materials that is central to the Signalling OA-ness initiative mentioned above, as it would not be possible with articles that are simply free to read, or even locked behind a paywall, instead of being available for free under a license that allows for images to be uploaded to (and remain on) Wikimedia Commons.
New mailing list
Since August 28, a public mailing list exists to help coordinate activities at the interface between Wikimedia and Open Access. It can be reached via https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/openaccess .
