Wiki Loves EuroPride in Albania 2023
A Collaborative Celebration of Diversity in Tirana
In celebrating the diversity and sharing information knowledge of Wiki Loves EuroPride in Albania, Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group organized an event about the LGBT community with the support of the Pro LGBT organization in Tirana, Albania.
In the span of 4 hours, the event focused on the translation and improvement of articles regarding the LGBTQ+ community in Albania by bringing together a passionate group of activists and volunteers. In the event, we tried to create a comprehensive representation of the LGBTQ+ community on Wikipedia. Activists played an important role in sharing their insights to enrich the content with their narratives.
The collaboration with the Pro LGBT Tirana organization added a crucial dimension as it brought insightful ideas and resources discussing the importance of the purpose in contributing to Wikimedia projects.
At the event, some participants were new to Wikipedia, and they learned editing skills and practices for creating LGBTQ+-related content. At the peak of the event, we discussed the terminology of LGBTQ+, showing our commitment to translating terms in order to make the content relatable to the audience in Albanian language.
With the support of the Pro LGBT organization, we are meeting several times with the community in December to increase and improve the articles for positive change, education, and inclusion.
For now, we are sharing some statistics of articles from the first event. More articles are on the way.
- Participants: 7
- Wikipedia: Articles created 14 and articles edited 29
- Wikidata: 52 total revisions
Here are some pictures from the edit-a-thon:

2022/23 in review ...
2023 was first year with significant Outreach efforts with GLAM and Education work in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Previous online events in pandemic with in 2020 librarians (over 25) and 2021 workshop for school teachers from Bosnia and Herzegovina were realized online, focusing on editing Wikipedia and its educational use (5 teachers participated). The activities were realized by @zBlace and @a81t. Thanks to support of Wikimedia CEE Hub and WMF we made regional contacts and started coordination with in-person meeting in Zagreb during the first meeting of CEE Hub that was organized there. Members of the Steering Committee and two executives got a first impressions of problems facing work in the territories without organized professional support as Affiliates only exist in Macedonia, Serbia and Republika Srpska.
2024 is hopefully going to be a year where work is more consolidated, informed and resourced in this aspect.

2023 momentum and scaling 2024
It is almost and of a year with longest summer season... Following A+F work in Museum of Contemporary Art we had another MeetUp with youth group and have started making 2024 plans.
2023 not to forget
CARNet and DARIAH...

After a few summer months we transitioned https://abcDNK.hr database and website (both) migrated to MediaWiki+Wikibase.cloud switching from custom solution to most recent and maybe one of the most complex transitions as (too?) early adopters of Wikibase, initially testing remote frontend client on MiraHeze.org, but them moved to self-hosted MediaWiki. This was done white quite a bit of display hacking and data modelling. Neither is fully polished or close to finished, but is stable enough and functional for basic features. We will likely report more elaborately later once the dust settles around this.
towards 2024
On the October 24th we did #3 outreach and education MeetUp in the (Art+Feminism mode) with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, towards the opening of the exhibitions of ‘Container’ (Croatian: Kontejner) exhibitions, this time in the internal caffe space wallpapered in modernist male architects :-) We hope to advance this work with other groups and Museums in 2024.

Wiki-residents establishing meeting took place in December
Second wiki-residents meeting took place in December
Wikimedia CR started to take the work of wiki-residents, participating in partnership activities with GLAM institutions seriously in 2023. As the number of wiki-residents increased, 2 new members in the loop from, National Library, WMCR organised an informal lunch for wiki-residents in October. Number of participants shared their experiences, obstacles and visions for their future work, including the wikidata capacities to share their database content. Meetings of wiki-residents will take place on a regular basis, next one to take place online on Tuesday January 9th, 2024.
Introducing new Program for Partnerships manager Pavel Bednařík
After few years of intense work and service of Eva Vele, WMČR appointed a new Program for Partnerships Manager, Pavel Bednařík. Pavel had been working with Wikimedia ČR since February 2022 as a Chief Trainer. The ambition of higher participation of current employees led to this new shared position. Due to many activities in the educational team of WMCR, he already had been in contact with institutions such as libraries, museums, universities etc.
„This is a new level of communication with these institutions, as they must understand, that our partnership could have a completely new dimension. It is not only about one-off events, but a systematic approach and presentation of their preservation, restoration and catalogisation work. We are open to new meaningful partnerships.“
His work includes GLAM projects and activities, support for the Wikidata community and advocacy of free culture of Wikimedia projects.
Go-ahead for Wikidata Project of GLAM institutions from Baden-Württemberg
The GLAM-BW Project
The GLAM-BW project is currently being conducted as part of the "GLAM goes OpenData" project by the Landesmuseum Württemberg and the Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg. The aim is to connect major collections held by museums in Baden-Württemberg (and abroad) by uploading information on collectors, former collection locations, collecting histories, and objects.
Focus on the Kunst- and Wunderkammer
The project is focused on the collections of the württembergische Kunstkammer (Cabinet of Curiosities) of the House of Württemberg. With more than 3,000 preserved objects, the Kunstkammer of the Dukes of Württemberg is one of the most important historical art chambers in Europe and is characterized by a particularly dense collection. However, the State Museum does not keep all the objects. Over the course of the 19th century, parts of the Kunstkammer were transferred to many different institutions. Today, parts of the collection are distributed among the State Museum of Natural History, the Linden Museum and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. In addition to precious works of craftsmanship, the collection includes objects imported to Europe from distant countries and a wealth of curious objects, stuffed animals, magical objects, bronzes, clocks, miniatures, coins and much more. In the knowledge graph, information such as the places where the objects were made and stored, collectors and dates can be displayed and searched semantically and exploratively. The corresponding archival records of the State Archives can also be linked.

Call for proposals for GLAM 2024
The call is open to public or private cultural institutions based in Italy: museums, archives and libraries, but also museum networks, ecomuseums and library systems. Local associations, foundations, schools and universities or other institutions can also be involved in the projects. The request budget for the activities can be between EUR 2,000 and EUR 8,000. The deadline for submitting proposals is 1 March 2024. Activities must be completed by 31 October 2024 and reported on by 15 November 2024. Institutions that have already been funded in the past, with original projects or in continuity with previous ones, can also apply.
Digitisation activities, events involving people with or without expertise in collaborative projects to write Wikipedia entries, transcribe Wikisource books, map cultural sites on OpenStreetMap or other similar activities can be funded. The materials produced will have to be published under free licences and all cultural institutions will have to commit to disseminate and share the results of their activities with the public, as well as to join the Empowering Italian GLAMsproject. Institutions will be able to propose to use the funds to purchase computer and photographic equipment for the production of digital content and to install open source software, or to organise events and pay for the involvement of professionals needed for the activities.
Auckland Museum summer updates
In 2023, Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira successfully applied for a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation to improve articles on local suburbs and local history. The New Zealand Government instigated a new history curriculum at the beginning of the year, focusing on local history and local stories. This grant focused on developing Wikipedia pages on suburbs of the Auckland Region, as a way to provide broad oversights of locations, and point students and teachers to good resources available on local stories. As of December 2023, 73 suburb pages have been improved, focusing on suburbs with the highest numbers of school students. In addition, articles on the five main metropolitan subregions of Auckland have been vastly improved (the Auckland isthmus, East Auckland, North Shore, South Auckland, and West Auckland). As of the end of 2023, the most successful of the improved articles is Papatoetoe, which received approximately 17,000 views since being worked on, and West Auckland, which received 12,000 views and has reached Good Article status. In early 2024 the project will continue, looking to develop pages on the remaining subregions of Auckland.
As a part of this project, the Wikimedia Foundation and the museum co-funded four Wikipedia interns to join our summer student cohort, learning how to edit Wikipedia over the 2023/24 summer period. The brief for our students is simple: create or improve articles related to the Auckland Region/Tāmaki Makaurau, based on what you feel passionate about, and what you feel will be beneficial for students learning about history. Currently, the students have discussed focusing on a few different aspects, including:
- More content on Te Ao Māori and Māori history
- Queer history
- Elevating Pasifika voices, and showcasing South Auckland culture
- Natural history
- Wikipedia pages on immigrant communities, including South Asian communities
Students spent the first two weeks learning about Wikimedia, including the limitations and benefits of the platform, issues such as conflicts of interest, and learnt how to edit. We'd planned for students to start posting articles by week three, but one student wrote and published her first article only four days into the programme!
So far, the programme has featured chats with guest speakers, including history education specialist Mark Sheehan, Pasifika Arts Aotearoa 2022 Wikipedian Sophia Coghini, historian Lucy Mackintosh, and Lucy Moore, UK Wikimedian of the Year 2022.
At the half way mark through the programme, students had written 18 pages, including natural history pages (Takapuna Fossil Forest), queer history (Ca d'Oro Coffee Lounge), Māori history of Tāmaki Makaurau (Tara Te Irirangi), and pages that focused on Pasifika and South Asian migrants to Aotearoa (Uluomato'otua Aiono, Phomen Singh).

Intense end to a year of GLAM-Wiki activities in Poland
WikiMatejko action continues
December was the second month of the WikiMatejko editing action organized jointly with the National Museum in Krakow.
The goal of the action is to enhance Wikipedia and its related projects with high-quality content, illustrations, and data related to the artist, Matejko, and his life and work.
In December, its participants created and developed Wikipedia entries about Jan Matejko's work and the figures and places associated with him. They are supported in this by the staff of the National Museum in Cracow and experienced Wikipedians. The first publications are already appearing on Wikipedia.
In January, we plan to have action participants publish new and developed articles, and then train them to create open educational resources based on content from Wikimedia projects, as well as translate articles and edit Wikidata. WikiMatejko editing action page in Polish can be found here. There are plans to translate WikiMatejko page to English.
Presentation for Wikiteka participants
On December 11, Kamila Neuman, Open Culture Manager at Wikimedia Poland, was a guest at an online meeting of the Wikiteka course, where she told its participants about the Wikimedia Commons project, which can be a source of illustration and inspiration for education.
Kamila has already had the opportunity to meet Wikiteki participants in person during the course's inauguration this August in Katowice, Poland, where she presented the GLAM-Wiki projects and their potential for use in education. As part of the meeting, Kamila also encouraged people to join the activities in the WikiMatejko editing campaign related to the preparation of open educational resources.
Wikiteka is a one-year nationwide program by Wikimedia Polska designed to enhance the leadership competencies of both male and female librarian teachers. The project utilizes open educational resources, including Wikipedias and sister projects, as well as technology. It aims to cultivate leadership skills by empowering and encouraging participants.
Online meeting of PL WIR
On December 14, the seventh online meeting of wikipedians in residence took place, organized by Kamila Neuman. The meeting was attended by Wojtek Szczęsny, WIR at the National Library in Warsaw, Grzegorz Gogacz, WIR at Koszykowa Library, and Agata Stadnicka, wikipedian and former Open Culture intern.
Meetings with wikipedians in residence are a space for sharing knowledge and experience and setting common standards for wikiresidency activities.
During the December meeting, Kamila shared her experiences and inspirations brought back from the GLAM-Wiki conference in Montevideo. The meeting was also an opportunity to talk about plans for the next year, especially the development of wikiresidencies and joint activities to promote GLAM-Wiki.
European GLAM-Wiki Coordinators meetup
The sixth online meeting of the European GLAM-Wiki Coordinators this year was held on December 12.
This time, participants of the GLAM-Wiki conference, who were asked to share their impressions and inspirations after the November conference in Montevideo, were invited to the meeting as guests. The meeting was co-hosted by Kamila Neuman (WMPL) together with Michelle van Lanschot (WMNL), and was attended by 18 people. Among those who shared their post-conference insights were Virginia Poundstone - Product and Data Manager at WMF, Brigitte Vézina - Director of Policy and Open Culture at Creative Commons, and Edward Betts - Director of Internet Archive UK.
Traditionally, it was also an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience in the GLAM-Wiki area.
The online meetings of the European GLAM-Wiki Coordinators were initiated after the coordinators' meeting in Prague in September 2022. Their purpose is to exchange knowledge and experience on an ongoing basis and to build networks that support coordinators in their work in the GLAM-Wiki area. To date, a total of seven meetings have been held.
The organizing team includes: Michelle van Lanschot from Wikimedia Netherlands, Giovanna Fontenelle from the Wikimedia Foundation and Kamila Neuman from Wikimedia Poland.
Presentation for WMPL team after GLAM-Wiki Conference in Montevideo
During the annual team-building meeting of the Board of Directors and the Wikimedia Poland staff team, Kamila Neuman presented her experiences from the GLAM-Wiki conference in Montevideo, sharing her impressions of the speech and workshop she led. Her presentation touched on key issues of the GLAM movement such as effective collaboration, knowledge and experience sharing, and ways to improve and optimize operations.
On the occasion, Kamila expressed gratitude to the Wikimedia Poland team for their support in preparing the workshops and presentations at the conference. She also shared a number of photos from her non-conference time as well, which gave her account a personal touch.
New Years postcards from National Library in Warsaw
At the beginning of New Year we recommend New Year postcards from Poland made available on Wikimedia Commons as part of the GLAM-Wiki collaboration with the National Library in Warsaw. Happy New Year!
Photo memories project concludes; Sörmlands museum passes 1000 uploads to Wikimedia Commons; Wikimedian in Residence supports an upload of music content; Subject terms from Queerlit; Wikidata for authority control: 3 years of work
Photo memories project concludes
100 000 Bildminnen, a joint project of Wikimedia Sverige and the Nordic Museum in Stockholm, concluded at the end of the year. In total, over 6,000 photos from the museum's archives were uploaded. These are just a small sample of the over 100,000 photos the museum digitized over the year, selected as to demonstrate the breadth of the collections. Selecting the photos to share on Wikimedia Commons was a big part of the project – we had many discussions with the museum about what would be most interesting and valuable for the Wikimedia community.
And the community's response has been very positive, with many photos getting improved descriptions and categorization; something the Nordic Museum is very thankful for, as they are going to use these contributions to improve the information in their own database. A great example of how the Wikimedia projects make it possible for experts all around the world to work together towards more free knowledge! Here are some examples of photos whose information has been improved:
-
This airplane is an J 34 Hunter...
-
...and these are called Saab 35 Draken.
-
This is the Karaya Beach in Monastir, Tunisia...
-
...and this is the amphitheatre of El Jem.
Sörmlands museum passes 1000 uploads to Wikimedia Commons and concludes third year of collaboration with Nyköping folkhögskola
With the latest upload to Commons from Sörmlands museum's collections, we have passed the bar of 1000 files. We have been continuously working with very curated and smaller uploads to Commons with files filling identified knowledge gaps in either Wikipedia or Wikidata. Examples are people missing pictures or articles missing relevant images to illustrate their contents. The latest upload has been the first one using Open Refine which has made the process much easier. Still, data cleansing before uploading the files to Commons is still the most time-consuming task. Exactly 25 percent of our files are used in 24 Wiki projects on more than 370 pages. We focus most on the usage aspect of our media files as it is not one more space to store our data apart from our collections management system and file servers. We want to see it being used actively.
Another Wikimedia project is our collaboration with Nyköping folkhögskola where adult students without a formal hish school diploma enrich Wikipedia articles with text, sources, and images. It was the third year of our collaboration and a great experience once again. It is a good opportunity to discuss access to and engagement with (local) history and museum collections. Here's some of the articles they have worked on:
As always, a huge thank you to all the Wikipedians who have supported the students with and after their edits!
Wikimedian in Residence supports an upload of music content
Wikimedia Sverige concluded the year by supporting Musikverket – the National Collections of Music, Theatre and Dance – in contributing a bunch of new material to Wikimedia Commons. We have a great relationship with them and have been working together for several years. It's become a tradition of sorts that every year we send a Wikimedian in Residence to their offices, where they not only prepare and upload their material, but also educate the staff about all things Wikimedia and facilitate an edit-a-thon. During the edit-a-thon nine participants added images and audio recordings to both articles and objects on Wikidata. Both staff from Musikverket and volunteers joined in to make sure the uploaded material came to use.
This time, we focused on two kinds of material. First of all, a lovely collection of high-resolution photos of musical instruments from the collections of the Swedish Museum of Performing Arts. Many of them are traditional Nordic folk instruments, like psalmodicons, langeleiks and Hardanger fiddles. But the museum boasts a collection of instruments from all over world, including both typical Western instruments like oboes and clarinets and items from Asia and Africa.
Secondly, we uploaded some audio recordings, focusing on psalmodicon music. The psalmodicon is not exactly a well-known instrument, making this collection unique and valuable to folk music enthusiasts and researchers.
All in all, over 5,000 files were uploaded in December.
Subject terms from Queerlit
The Swedish subject terms from Queerlit are now uploaded to Wikidata. There is more work to be done with the objects, for example they could be expanded with descriptions in more languages and if possible an identifier from, for example, Homosaurus can be added.
Wikidata for authority control: 3 years of work
Another big project that concluded in December 2023 was Wikidata for authority control, a collaboration between Wikimedia Sverige, the Nationalmuseum and the National Historical Museums of Sweden.
In this project, WMSE worked together with staff from the two museum to equip them with the tools and skills to be able to match the data in their own authority databases with Wikidata. In the conference paper Wikidata for authority control: sharing museum knowledge with the world, we write in detail about what the project entails and why it's important; in short, the participants have learned a lot about the open knowledge ecosystem, added thousands of external identifiers to Wikidata, wrote their own SPARQL queries, created many new items and used OpenRefine to clean up their data and edit Wikidata. Most importantly, they are now well equipped to spread knowledge about Wikidata, Linked Open Data and OpenRefine in the GLAM sector.
On WMSE's wiki, you can read (in Swedish) a summary of what has been done in the project.
Swiss GLAM Programme
Data and files import with the Museum of Natural History of Neuchâtel
In the second half of 2023, Wikimedia CH commissioned a project for the Museum of Natural History of Neuchâtel, to import the content of their Louis Agassiz urchin fossil casts collection. The 2000 files were imported to Commons and the data added to Wikidata. The use of structured data allowed to build a dynamic and multilingual template to describe the files with data stored in Wikidata. After getting the data and files from the museum, we analyzed and cleaned the existing data, created missing elements on Wikidata, imported the data to Wikidata using OpenRefine, and finally the files to Commons, also using OpenRefine. You can find the project page in English and in French here.
MiniGLAM on Moche culture
Wikipedians visited the Museum zu Allerheiligen and got a tour by chief curator Werner Rutishauser through the exhibition on the Moche culture in Perú. The objects shown are from the Ebnöther collection. After the tour everybody woreked on their articles. The project was organized by User Leopelle. The Moche culture is a very earny Peruvian high culture that is about a thousand years older than the famous Inca culture. It was located around the river Moche and around today's city of Trujillo. In the Museum zu Allerheiligen one can find a big collection of objects that were enlarged by objects from other collections. The Moche culture was well developed as water systems were constructed and professional housing was realized. As ceramics have been used for documentation there is quite a lot of visual material availabe to understand the Moche culture. Women also had power in society as the Lady of Cao. With the catastrophe by El Niño it disappeared. The project continues with meetings at the community space in Schaffhausen.
Make Christmas Time Anti Bias Wiki Time
The Anti-bias Wiki-Time events were dedicated to the topics of gender bias and discrimination and thus also drew attention to the lack of visibility of female personalities and diverse communities on Wiki. The Columbian artist María Linares presented her research on Anti Bias structures and oppotunities. The workshops took place in three different Swiss cities:
- 7th December 2023 in the city archives of Biel/Bienne from 5 to 8. p.m.
- 8th December 2023 at the Zurich City Archives from 5 to 8 p.m.
- 9th December 2023 at the FATpermanent Art Space in Schaffhausen from 1 to 4 p.m.
The aim of the workshops was to raise awareness of these issues with the participants and to develop possible solutions for anti-discrimination and greater visibility of diversity within Wikipedia. To this end, the Colombian-German artist María Linares gave insights into her latest artistic research and works that deal with discrimination as well as gender bias. After this introductory presentation, the participants were given an introduction to the Wikipedia universe by Wikipedian IvaBerlin. Many questions from the participants were discussed and answered in a dialogue to empower them to become future Wikipedians. Our first host Thomas Krüger, head of the City Archives of Biel/Bienne, gave insights into the day-to-day work and collection strategy. A memorable moment was the presentation by Andrea Wild and Karin Beck, hosts from the Zurich City Archives, who impressively demonstrated how difficult it can be to search for female personalities in an archive due to previous/historic social constructions and codes (taking over the name of the husband, etc.). Another highlight was the last Anti-bias-Wiki-Time workshop at the FATpermanent Art Space in Schaffhausen hosted by Ursina Gabriela Roesch, co-funder and member of FLINTA on the ground of the artistic co-working spaces. Together with Nusa Núñez de la Torre (artist) a lot of questions were raised about the used “frame-practices” around core informations. But also about the criterias of Wikipedia, which to all appearances, seem to have developed historically from a male perception and practice, and therefor resulting in a structural lack of female and diverse content.
The GLAM team wants to thank all participants for their contributions and wishes a Merry Christmas in the spirit of the event title: "Make Christmas Time Anti Bias Wiki Time".
2023 in Review
Khalili Foundation: December 2023
The Musa va 'Uj article passed Good Article review, becoming the eighth Good Article from this project. The Empire of the Sultans article was nominated for DYK review and has passed! It should be linked from the English Wikipedia home page some time in January.
Persian Wikipedia chose two Khalili Collections images as Pictures Of The Day: an illustration from the Anis al-Hujjaj on 2nd December and a Talismanic shirt on 14th December.
I joined a second online meeting of the Wikimedians of the Islamic Civilization User Group. During this two-hour session, the group translated English phrases into Arabic; these phrases are names of Khalili Collection art works or names of the type of object. There was some debate about how "pop-up book", "sabre hilt", and "falconry gauntlet" could best be represented in Arabic, especially the default form of the phrases to be used in Wikidata. This work makes the digitisations shared on Wikimedia more accessible to Arabic readers and also makes Wikidata/Wikimedia better able to describe objects from other Islamic collections. The participants also transcribed lines of text from calligraphic works (see the "Inscriptions" field). Many thanks to Michel, Sandra, and the other participants.
Katy (at the Khalili Foundation) and I have arranged an edit-a-thon at SOAS, London on 11 January. This is a free public event that just requires registration on EventBrite.
I have continued work on the article about the Heaven on Earth: Art from Islamic Lands exhibition. I have also worked on categorising images on Wikimedia Commons: 48 images that were uncategorised now have category tags, and Khalili Collections images are visible in 60 more categories.
I have scheduled a Hajj-relevant image as Picture Of The Day for English Wikipedia on 14 June, the first day of the 2024 Hajj.
The one upload this month was a cropped version of a previously-uploaded image. There were no new translated articles this month. GLAMorgan reports 5,161,982 image views in December, from 90 different wikis.
Khalili Foundation: Year in Review
Increasing use of Khalili Collections images, a rush of translations from English into other languages, and images featured on the home page together made this a record year for image views and for page views. This was also the year this partnership expanded into events, with two edit-a-thons and a webinar for the Wikimedians of the Islamic Civilization. Waqas Ahmed, Executive Director of the Khalili Foundation, made a presentation to Art UK using this project as a case study of successful sharing of cultural heritage on Wikimedia. I spoke to the board of Wikimedia UK at their meeting in London about how this project improves the cultural diversity of Wikipedia and demonstrates both quantity and quality of shared material. As part of the Khalili Foundation's World Festival of Cultural Diversity, this partnership raised the profile of cultural diversity on Wikipedia by greatly improving some relevant articles.
- Fifteen new articles in English, Indonesian, Urdu, Malay and Spanish
- One Good Article (Musa va 'Uj)
- One Honourable Mention in Wikimedia UK's Partnership of the Year awards.
- Two edit-a-thons (hosted by Wellcome Collection and Khalili Research Centre, University of Oxford)
- Two Featured Image awards: one on English Wikipedia and another on Arabic Wikipedia
- Two Featured Article awards: Hajj: Journey to the Heart of Islam in English Wikipedia and Urdu Wikipedia, getting 52,771 page views over the course of the year
- Three articles featured in Did You Know? (Musa va 'Uj, Falnama, Gulshan-i 'Ishq)
- Substantial rewrites of the articles Cultural diversity, World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, and Falnama. These articles are collectively getting more than 10,000 views per month.
- 90 Wikimedia projects using images from this partnership, up from 81 last year
- 58,849 page views of English Wikipedia articles about the Khalili Collections (the overview article, the 8 articles about individual collections, Musa va 'Uj, and Khalili Imperial Garniture)
- 21,653 page views of English Wikipedia articles about Sir David Khalili and the Khalili Foundation
- 78.5 million image views across all Wikimedia platforms
- The coming year
- As more media coverage of Sir David Khalili's autobiography, The Art of Peace emerges, and more recognition accrues to the Khalili Foundation's cultural diversity and interfaith work with its partner organisations, it will be a priority to work with the Wikipedia community to get this third-party coverage summarised in Wikipedia.
- The short article about the Musa va 'Uj has attracted a great deal of attention. There are more paintings and art works that merit an article of their own.
- Metalwork of Islamic countries is a huge topic which lacks a Wikipedia article, and for which the Khalili Collections catalogues have an enormous amount of information.
- There are other art exhibitions that do not yet have Wikipedia articles.
- There is scope to upload more images to add to the 1,500 that are already shared on Wikimedia.
- Documenting more paintings in Wikidata and Commons for the Sum of All Paintings project.
- Further raising the profile of cultural diversity on Wikipedia by recognising volunteers who create or improve articles to fill cultural gaps.
- Working with partner organisations including Art UK to improve their representation of the Khalili Collections and diverse visual art generally.

Thank you for making Wiki Loves Living Heritage happen!
To celebrate living heritage and mark the twentieth anniversary of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Wiki Loves Living Heritage campaign was launched by the European Network of Focal Points for the 2003 Convention (ENFP) and AvoinGLAM in the spring of 2023. The participatory, community-driven initiative has called on heritage practitioners, local Wikimedia volunteers as well as the ICH Focal Points, facilitators, accredited ICH NGOs and other stakeholders around the world to document and celebrate their living heritage. It has resulted in 5 500 living heritage elements described in Wikidata, representing over 24 000 existing and new Wikipedia articles written about them in 276 different languages as well as 3000 new photos in Wikimedia Commons.
The year has been a door opener for many fruitful upcoming cooperations and the project has offered learning and skill sharing opportunities for local heritage practitioners, Wikimedia communities as well as the ICH Focal Points, NGOs and other stakeholders. Alongside promoting open access to cultural heritage, the initiative has made a strong commitment to ethical sharing. The campaign will continue bringing together new kinds of collaborations for safeguarding our living heritage for the future.
The activities have been independently chosen by the participating communities themselves. Events and photo contests have been a popular choice in different parts of the world. Among the highlights is Wikimania 2023 of over 2 000 participants with a keynote around ICH by Dr. Kirk Siang Yeo, and the impressive Wiki Loves Living Heritage in Singapore Photo Contest with around 1 200 photos and winners awarded in the final ceremony. In Europe, the European photo contest related to the campaign resulted in 1 700 photos. All these photos are now openly available in Wikimedia Commons.
The different corners of the Open movement have made this global collaboration come true. The participating Wikimedians in affiliates have coordinated activities and data imports with UNESCO focal points across the world, featured in TV shows and being invited to talk about Open Culture in governmental events. Volunteers have participated by bringing data online, writing articles, transcribing living heritage literature, participating in the photo contests, joining the weekly meetups, presenting at events, solving problems on the online channel, maintaining translations or providing technical advice.
Wikimedia Foundation supported the activity throughout the process. The Wikimedia Foundation Culture & Heritage team joined organizing the Ethics of Open Sharing webinar. The Communications team has provided support and two events have been organized with the Let's Connect Learning Clinics.
The Ethics of Open Sharing webinar was arranged in collaboration with the Creative Commons Open Culture Platform and the Ethics of Open Sharing working group. They produced Ethical Sharing Card deck based on the MOI Framework, produced on a cooperation project lead by Finnish Heritage Agency and supported by NEMO. The amazing speakers Melissa Shaginoff, Shailili Zamora Aray, Patricia Adjei and Mehtab Khan set the tone and discourse for the whole year to come.
Wiki Loves Living Heritage was part of several events over the course of the year. Living Heritage Bazaar events were arranged in Europe in collaboration with the European Heritage Days coordinators, at Wikimania in Singapore and in the GLAM Wiki 2023 Conference in Montevideo, Uruguay. At GLAMhack 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland, Traditional Knowledge content labeling on Wikimedia projects was workshopped with Local Contexts. Data import was discussed at WikidataCon, modelling living heritage at Data Modelling Days, and using Wikimedia Meta as the project platform at GLAM Wiki 2023.
The campaign was supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, Council of Europe / European Heritage Days, Quebec Council for Living Heritage, Dutch Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage, Federal Office of Culture of Switzerland, Workshop Intangible Heritage Flanders & Flemish Commission for UNESCO in Belgium, and the Finnish Heritage Agency.
We wish to thank you all, and hope to continue work together!

GLAM Wiki Conference
We were thrilled to participate in GLAM Wiki 2023. In the lead-up to the conference, the community identified technical capacity as a key concern for discussion. Responding to this need:
- Selena Deckelmann gave the keynote, inviting GLAM professionals and volunteers to help her make Wikimedia multigenerational. Selena also contributed to a pre-conference panel discussion, AI and the Knowledge Society.
- The AI discussion continued in a workshop with Silvia, Giovanna, Paula Durán, and Jonathan Jiménez Salazar: Co-Creating an AI Responsive GLAM-Wiki Curriculum.
- The Culture and Heritage team demoed two product collaborations: Commons Impact Metrics and an alt text structured task on mobile.
- Five staff from the Foundation’s product team were at the conference, listening and learning through many 1:1 and small group meetings with volunteers, affiliate staff, and partners.
The Culture and Heritage team got to enjoy in-person time with affiliate staff, volunteers, partners (such as the Flickr Foundation, DPLA, Creative Commons, and OpenRefine) and networks (such as Wikisource Loves Manuscripts and 1Lib1Ref).
Satdeep celebrated the diverse GLAM Wiki network by taking portraits of the attendees, which are available on Commons as Faces of GLAM Wiki.
Commons Impact Metrics
The Commons Impact Metrics project responds to community feedback that reliable and well-maintained metrics are essential for partnerships with libraries and cultural institutions. In the first stage of the project, we analysed the community-developed GLAM Metrics Needs page and commonly-used tools, such as BaGLAMa2, GLAMorgan, and GLAM-Wiki Dashboard.
We showed a prototype at the GLAM Wiki Conference in November and now we're opening it up for anyone to test. Here is how you can help:
- Explore the prototype following these user testing instructions.
- Share your thoughts, feedback, and questions on the discussion page.
Wikisource Loves Manuscripts
- The Wikisource Loves Manuscripts pilot in Indonesia concluded with a proofread-a-thon in collaboration with UNESCO Jakarta, focusing on a Javanese text inscribed in the Memory of the World register. 30 participants transcribed 60+ pages on manuscripts on Wikisource. You can read more on Diff.
- The Learning Partners Network has participated in four sessions so far, covering partnerships, Wikisource, advanced digitisation training, and Transkribus. There were many Wikisource sessions at the GLAM Wiki Conference and an informal meet-up for members of the Learning Partners Network.
- We also celebrated 20 years of Wikisource with a Diff post and social media toolkit.
Flickypedia
- Following a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference, the Flickr Foundation released a Flickypedia alpha for testing. This includes new features to: reduce risk and emphasise responsible licensing; prevent duplicates of Flickr photos on Commons; make it easier to find Flickr photos on Commons; and thank the original Flickr contributors. Please share any feedback on this discussion page.
- The Flickr Foundation also made a successful Wikidata property request for Flickr Photo ID. They plan to use this property to backfill structured data on the >10 million images that are already on Wikimedia Commons. The related bot request is still open for discussion.
