Dutch National Archives
In September & October 2018 Dutch Wikipedian User:Mr Nostalgic uploaded >50,000 press photographs from the period 1940-1990 to Wikimedia Commons. This was done in an additional upload, on top of the earlier influx of 300,000 photographs from the Dutch National Archives to Wikimedia Commons. That upload, on which GLAM Newsletter reported earlier this year, was also initiated and performed by Mr.Nostalgic.
All images have a CC-zero license, which means they can be used freely. From a copyright perspective the years covered (1940-1990) form an interesting period. The current upload is in a way a bonus, consisting of photographs that were earlier skipped or excluded -or have been given copyright clearance since the last upload.

The scope of the collection is diverse: sports (including photographs of Van Basten, Rijkaard & Cruyff -and a rare photograph of Canadian chess grandmaster Peter Biyiasas), politics (mainly Dutch, but also photographs of politicians from Germany, France, Britain, the United States, Sweden and India -like Folke Bernadotte and Rajiv Gandhi), wars (WWII, Dutch-Indonesian war), daily life, art, religious affairs, festivities, the Dutch royal family and musicians (Erroll Garner, Joan Baez). Countries covered in these photographs are the Netherlands, Surinam, Indonesia, Dutch Antilles.

All photographs uploaded by Mr.Nostalgic can be found in this Commons list. After photographs will have been properly categorized by other Wikipedians, they will be removed from the current category (Skipped Images from Nationaal Archief).

Usage
Usage of this collection is difficult to measure, because of the many different sub-categories. The largest category, the Anefo collection of press photographs, contained 301,000 photographs in Commons as of 18 Sept. 2018. Usage is quite good, with 104,000 images used in all language versions of Wikipedia, of which 14,500 distinct images from this collection (=almost 5%).
GLAM Wiki meeting, 1 October 2018, Tresoar, Leeuwarden
Until now, relatively few GLAMs from the northern parts of the Netherlands participated in Wikimedia-activities. To remedy this, and to increase awareness of GLAM-Wiki cooperation in general, WMNL organised a GLAM-Wiki meeting at Tresoar, Leeuwarden, on 1 October 2018. Tresoar graciously provided the meeting room and helped communicate the meeting. The meeting was divided in 2 parts: during the first half, Jona Lendering (Livius.org) and Else Gootjes (Erfgoed Gelderland) detailed their ongoing GLAM-Wiki work. Also, Sandra Rientjes introduced the Wikimedia movement and projects in general. During the second part, the GLAMs were asked to complete a small survey to identify suitable collections for upload and to find out how that would fit in their general open data policies. Some 25 people attended from a diverse range of GLAMs from Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe.
Aerial photographs from the Dutch Institute for Military History
The Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie (Dutch Institute for Military History) has uploaded a second batch of aerial photographs made by the Dutch Royal Air Force during the 1920s-1940s. This second batch consists of 1895 photos of cities, military objects (barracks, air fields, etc) but also the construction of the Afsluitdijk. This batch follows upon a similar batch uploaded in 2017. Both have received generous press interest and were eagerly picked up by the Wikimedia community. Latest version GLAM-Wiki manual available
Erfgoed Gelderland has published a new version of the manual Wikimedia for heritage institutions (in Dutch). Via Wikimedia Commons you can download, use and distribute the manual (PDF-version) for free.
The manual contains a practical step-by-step plan for adding images, adding or improving articles on Wikipedia and publishing data as Linked Open Data via Wikidata. The document also explaind and emphasizes copyrights, the use of Creative Commons licences and the codes of conduct for the different Wikimedia-websites.
New in this version are the following topics:
- standardcontracts for Creative Commons releases and licensing
- a step-by-step plan for using the GLAM Wiki toolset, a programme for mass uploading files to Wikimedia Commons
- an explanation concerning the new functionality for searching Wikimedia Commons

Wikipedia course for Historian societies
This autumn Erfgoed Gelderland will start a course for Historian Societies. During this free multiple day course ‘Writing for Wikipedia’ members of Historian Societies will learn to acquire practical skills which are neccesary for producing an adequate article for encyclopedia. The course will also provide backgroundinformation and the appliciations of the rules at Wikipedia. The knowledge coming from historical societies is a crucial part of this heritage. Already six Histrorian Societies from Gelderland are attending the course.
