Preparing the future GLAM generation
Advanced training on outreach at the University of São Paulo
The User Group Wikimedia in Brazil and the University of São Paulo Center for Neuromathematics (NeuroMat) partnered to provide an advanced training on how to organize Wikimedia education programs and outreach initiatives in December. Nine two-hour training sessions were held from December 12 to 15 at NeuroMat, and ten undergraduate and graduate students attended. Sessions combined lectures --that were given by Sturm, Horadrim and Mariliawikipedia-- and hands-on activities, such as drafting up subject-specific Wikipedia handouts for educational activities and setting up strategies for edit-a-thons and GLAM partnerships. As a follow-up actvity, revised versions of these handouts will be published and outreach activities students have worked on will be set up. Initial uploads of the GLAM with the Museum of Mathematics
Last month, we presented a new GLAM initiative with the Museum of Mathematics (Matemateca), and initial uploads have already been made. These initial uploads are a test for uploading a larger set of images using Pattypan. This initiative is organized by the UG Wikimedia in Brazil, NeuroMat and independent volunteer Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton. Uploads may be seen under this specific category on the Commons. Testing GLAMpipe for uploads on veterinary anatomy
The next 30-image bundle of the GLAM initiative with the University of São Paulo Museum of Veterinary Anatomy will be done as a test for GLAMpipe, a recently funded uploading tool that has been developed by Finnish volunteers. The expectation is that GLAMpipe will be able to automatically extract metadata from the museum inventory onto the Commons, which would save time from a student worker --whose activity has been the focus of an outreach case study-- who has been doing this work under the supervision of UG Wikimedia in Brazil members.
Decreasing the gender gap on the web
After completing the national phase of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 contest, organized by the Wiki Education Brazil group, we were happy to announce the list of winners and also to collaborate with the international team by elaborating the profile of the first three winning prizes photographers for a blogpost. The photographer Gastão Guedes, winner of the first place in the national contest, was also an international highlight. His photograph of Palácio do Planalto took the seventh place in the international competition.
In order to expand the scope of the GLAM projects, Wiki Education Brazil group held partnership prospecting meetings with the Fundação Energia e Saneamento in São Paulo, in early November, and with the School of Museology from UNIRIO, a federal university localized in Rio de Janeiro city. The initial conversation with Fundação Energia e Saneamento revealed the team's interest in producing and improving articles on museum-related topics, what will be planned with Wiki Educação Group. With UNIRIO, the partnership was first discussed to be established with two initial study groups.
In December, we began the first activities related to the partnership with the School of Museology of UNIRIO. A calendar for the execution of the project was defined by the Wiki Educação Brasil, and three new articles were proposed to be created: Museu do Samba (Samba Museum), Musealização (Musealization) and Patrimonialização (Patrimonialisation). We also had the opportunity to help reviewing the proposed text for the article in Brazilian Portuguese about Zbyněk Zbyslav Stránský, a very important author of the Museology field. With the same thought in mind, we helped to improve the article about Waldisa Rússio, a very important Brazilian author and museologist.
Another activity that aimed to expand the content of museums on Wikipedia PT was carried out by students of the Museology course of ETEC Parque de Juventude, which under the guidance of Juliana Monteiro, GLAM Project Coordinator of Wiki Educação Brasil, produced texts and submitted photographs on Wikimedia Commons. The content is about four Museums localized in the countryside of São Paulo State: Dom Pedro I and Dona Leopoldina Museum, in Pindamonhangaba city; Paulo Setúbal Historical Museum, in Tatuí city; Visconde de Mauá Museum, in Mogi das Cruzes city and Prudente de Morais Museum, in Piracicaba city. All texts, with exception of Museum Prudente de Moraes, were written on user test pages and received comments from more experienced editors. The expectation is to publish the improved texts in the first three months of 2017. In November, we also started to explore the possibilities of registering information about Brazilian museums in Wikidata. In this sense, we completed the registration of the Pinacoteca of the State of São Paulo, the Museum of the Brazilian House, the Afro Brasil Museum and the Casa de Portinari Museum.
Throughout the month of November, the Wiki Education Brazil group has also dedicated itself to an important international partnership between Wikimedia and BBC World: the BBC 100 Women edit-a-thon. Held on December 8 the event was part of the fourth edition of the BBC 100 Women series, which annually elects the world's 100 most inspiring and influential women. For the first time Brazil took part and the women involved with Wiki projects in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro could organize and participate of the event. And, in addition to the official BBC list, Wiki Education Brazil GLAM team listed over fifty names of women working in the area of historical and cultural heritage, due the fact that these areas have a lot of women working but barely recognized. At the end, the edit-a-thon gathered 17 participants who translated 13 entries, improved eight and created 20. Juliana Monteiro, GLAM coordinator project of Wiki Education Brazil group, also could give an interview about this important event in favor of decreasing the gender gap on the web.
In December, we also conducted research on authors and works entering the public domain in 2017. With the data collected, we prepared posts for our social networks in commemoration of Public Domain Day, disseminating material available on the works and authors in the Commons.
