Wikimedia Italy's calls for free knowledge
Call for proposals for GLAM 2023
Wikimedia Italy's calls for volunteers to support free, shared and accessible knowledge for all are back again in 2023. After the success of the last editions, confirmed again the call for active volunteers on Wikipedia, sister projects and OpenStreetMap. At the same time, the call for museums, archives and libraries also opens in January to encourage the enhancement of their collections on shared projects. The deadline to apply is the 1st of March and the grant requested can be between 2,000 and 8,000 euros.
The call for proposals is funded by Wikimedia Italia and carried out in collaboration with ICOM Italia, and Creative Commons Italia, to support the free online reuse of public domain images (Art. 14 - EU Copyright Directive) and open access content with free licenses, which are an opportunity to disseminate knowledge of cultural heritage with digital technologies and in particular the Internet, an effective vehicle for raising citizens' awareness of direct participation, a stimulus to research, creativity, editorial production and an effective tool for cultural and tourism promotion.
The aim is to support the sharing and enhancement of cultural content, enhancing the digital content of the available museums, their visibility and their impact; to encourage more and more cultural institutions to collaborate with volunteers from the Wikimedia and OpenStreetMap communities and with Wikimedia projects, to make sure that wiki platforms, who have a wide and varied audience, represent the best source of information available on their areas of interest.
Winning institutions will be offered also the opportunity to take an online training course on the use of Wikipedia, sister projects and OpenStreetMap for cultural heritage enhancement, and will be asked to join the Empowering Italian GLAMs project, which aims to bring Italian institutions themselves onto Wikimedia projects and spread open access.
As part of its support for the production of free content, Wikimedia Italia has been promoting the Empowering Italian GLAMs project in collaboration with ICOM Italia, Creative Commons Italia, the Department of Economics and Statistics "Cognetti de Martiis" of the University of Turin and with co-funding from the Wikimedia Foundation. The project improves data on Italian cultural institutions on Wikidata and supports cultural institutions in opening up even a small selection of their content; currently the project focuses on museums by inviting them to make a small selection of images of their institution available on Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata and collaborates more specifically with a selection of institutions on a collection.
Therefore, in order to increase the impact of Wikimedia Italy's actions by fostering synergies and focusing efforts in a single direction, 60 percent (€30,000) of the call's budget will be reserved for museums only.
