Swiss GLAM Programme
Working at the Language Border
In January a new collaboration with the Art Centre in Biel/Bienne KBCB (Kunsthaus Biel Centre d’art Bienne) started. Biel/Bienne is the only city in Switzerland with two official languages that are written and spoken in public. French and German culture are visible in everyday life besides many other language cultures that are spoken as well. The Art Centre works on bridging the gap and on decreasing eurocentric approaches. With GLAM at Wikimedia CH we plan cooperations between art and wiki projects. Starting with community meetups and presentations once in a month we want to create new formats. Every last Frdiay a library space got offered for Wikimedioans to work on wiki projects. The book collections, mainly monographies, either came from collections of staff members or are donations from artists or renowned art patrons such as Mary Ann and Hal Glicksmann. The library consists of three sections: i.) Monographies; ii.) edited editions and iii.) large-format publications. Publications are purchased for exhibitions and when an exhibition catalogue is published, copies are given not only to the National Library in Bern, but also to the regional libraries and municipal institutions of Biel/Bienne. Due to the historically grown collection, the library is, in the words of staff member Lauranne Eyer, predominantly "male", "white", "eurocentric", etc., but should become much more diverse in the future.
Digital Archiving of Contemporary Art
In times with crisis and wars there is an urge to safe contemporary art practice. In Switzerland the archive kleio is an artist run initiative where artists can upload their work. It is nonprofit but still asks for a maintenance fee. At GLAM in Switzerland a team is working on using wikibase and creating opprtortuntiy for connecting contemporary art with the wiki projects. Art practice sometimes can be strange for gatekeepers as they might be suprised why for Example a banana skin is used for an art object and why it is saved for conservation. Artists often use everyday objects as material to change the perspective.
Wiki Loves Broadcast
The Swiss Television SRF started opening their science content. Some Videos are now here on commons. The community project Wiki Loves Broadcast is now expanding internationally. In Switzerland the German television digitalization is well observed and now followed.
