Edit-a-thon in Riga
Edit-a-thon at the National Library of Latvia
On Saturday the 12th of March 18 people gathered at the National Library of Latvia to write articles about Latvian musicians and composers and enrich Wikipedia with a part of the National Library of Latvia's music collection. The event was organised by Europeana Sounds together with the National Library of Latvia. Mārtiņš Bruņenieks from the Wikimedians of Latvia User Group gave a presentation about Wikipedia and explained how to write, edit and enrich Wikipedia articles. Futrhermore, Mārtiņš Bruņenieks together with Edgars Lecis and Edgars Košovojs from the User Group gave the participants guidance during the day.
The participants managed to write 42 new Wikipedia articles, for example, this article about Hermanis Brauns.
The National Library released 80 audio files from their collection of historical Latvian sound recordings to enrich Wikipedia articles. Also 33 audio files were used to enrich Wikipedia articles 58 times. The day before the edit-a-thon Zane Grosa and Artūrs Žogla (National Library of Latvia) were interviewed by a morning show of Latvian Independent Television and during the event their news crew came to see how it was going and interviewed several participants.
The event concluded with tour around library, including storage rooms filled with beautiful books, sheet music, vinyls and cd’s.
