Editing competition about the villages in Aegean Macedonia
After the first edit-a-thon organized as a part of the celebration of the 15th anniversary of Wikipedia and held at the Library of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts where the Wikipedians have been editing directly from the books with abundant materials of information, Shared Knowledge have decided to use those available materials for organizing a large scale venture such as editing competition. On the proposal of the project coordinator of the Community Ehrlich91 the topic of the competition was chosen to be the "Villages in Aegean Macedonia", which in fact was a continuation of the theme of the edit-a-thon. In accordance with the Library, the Wikimedian-in-residence at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts have entirely scanned the two volumes of the book Settlements in Aegean Macedonia on 723 pages in total for use as a referent scientific material for the purposes of the editing competition.
With this topic we want to increase quality of Macedonian Wikipedia, because we have a lot of articles about villages in Aegean Macedonia, that are written at the beginning of the Macedonian Wikipedia and have just a few word and nothing more. With this editing competition we change this and we hope that the editors will continue writes or improves articles about this villages, now using the referent literature.
Outcomes and results of the competition
After the all preparations such as providing and distribution of literature, creating templates for references and project page with all necessary information have been undertaken, the beginning of the competition was scheduled to start on 22nd of February and last until 21st of March. Six editors have participated editing 419 articles in total, which covers 0,5% of the total number of articles on Macedonian Wikipedia (on 21st of March). Almost 90% of articles written during the competition were completely new or improved in significant way, because the articles about this topic on Macedonian Wikipedia were in very poor quality (just a few words, without pictures, citations, etc.).
