Festivals of history, heritage and #1Lib1Ref
Australian libraries earning their #1Lib1Ref stripes
Local and Family History Coordinator at Yarra Plenty Regional Library, Liz Pidgeon signed up 45 library staff, including the CEO, to the May edition of the #1Lib1Ref campaign in May. After a train-the-trainer session at Mill Park Library on 3 May, staff went on to support their colleagues in adding citations to Wikipedia articles related to the library's region of northeast Melbourne. Congratulations to Yarra Plenty Regional Library for achieving so much in their first year of #1Lib1Ref. State Library Queensland continued their involvement and ran another great campaign in May 2019.
National Trust public art project
The state of Victoria has a wealth of public art assets on permanent public display. While those in the city of Melbourne are well-documented, there are many significant works throughout regional Victoria that only known locally. There is no centralised location for gathering information on these works, the artists or and their locations. As part of the Australian Heritage Festival, National Trust (Victoria) convened an evening workshop with Alex Lum and Pru Mitchell to raise awareness of the project and work on plans to add public art works to Wikidata.
South Australian History Festival
On Saturday 18 May, 2019 International Museum Day, twenty South Australians reported for edit-a-thon duty at the Torrens Parade Ground, Adelaide. They spent the morning learning about Wikipedia, and adding and improving information in Wikipedia on South Australian museums. Museums to benefit included transport museums, religious museums, community archives and the Santos Museum of Economic Botany. This event was part of the month-long South Australian History Festival, well-organised by Catherine Manning, and History Trust South Australia. Thanks also to local Wikimedians Alex, Adam, Ruth and Clive for their support of the edit-a-thon.
