Germanys biggest conference on cultural politics in the digital world, "Shaping access!", took place for the fifth time supported by Wikimedia Deutschland on November 5./6. at Altonaer Museum, Hamburg. This year, the major focus was put on future strategies for access to cultural heritage. Around 300 participants from the cultural sector gathered to hear talks, participate in workshops and discuss questions like: "What are new ideas and innovations? What trends become apparent? What challenges are cultural institutions facing regarding these innovations?" Wikimedia Deutschland curated a conference slot on the future of participartion (see full program here), we presented various formats that WMDE provides for the cultural sector. The workshop "CC Change your mind", that we developed with the German Digital Library, trains GLAM staff to licence their cultural items right. At the Wikiversum worldcafé, GLAM volunteers from the regional community base Kontor Hamburg presented possibilities for GLAMs to work with Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata and Wikipedia. On the conclusive discussion panel "The future of participation", Tim Moritz Hector, board chairman of WMDE, pleaded for free access to cultural heritage.

On October 8, author Dr. Mark Terkessidis, scientist and commons activist Dr. Friederike Habermann and theorist Christoph Kappes discussed the principle of collaboration at WMDEs discussion panel "ABC of Free Knowledge". Terkessidis just published the book "A theory of collaboration" on the development and necessity of collaborative structures, be it for developing constitutions or projects like Wikipedia. The main question was, what kind of structures exactly are important for fostering the development of open knowledge and commons. This was the 12th edition of WMDEs discussion panel series "ABC of Free Knowledge".
