Wikipedia + Libraries project kicks off online training program w/ guidance from Wikipedians
September 13 -- WebJunction, OCLC's continuing education platform for library staff, officially launched the 9-week Wikipedia + Libraries online training program. The program enrolled nearly 300 library staff; the majority are from US public libraries, the target audience for the project. There are participants from 45 US states and 23 other countries. The first three weeks of the program included three live sessions. Here's what's been covered so far:
- Wikipedia for you, your library, and your community
- Evaluating Wikipedia with a critical eye
- Contributing to Wikipedia
Each live session features a presentation by a library practitioner. To date, Bob Kosovsky (Kosboot), New York Public Library; János McGhie (McGhiever), Saint Paul Public Library; and Susan Barnum (Megalibrarygirl), El Paso Public Library have shared their Wikipedia experiences with course participants in guest presentations.

Course participants indicated their training goals by annotating a slide during the first live online session of the Wikipedia + Libraries online training program.
The remaining six weeks of the training program will include three more live sessions and participants will develop plans for implementing Wikipedia engagement that will benefit their communities.
Presently, course materials are only accessible to course participants; enrollment is now closed. However, by the project's conclusion in the spring of 2018, curriculum and training materials generated will be consolidated, curated and hosted on WebJunction for open access and at no cost to users under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 license.

Wikipedians are guides to course participants
Course successes so far have been possible thanks to the efforts of volunteer Wikipedians, many of whom are library staff or work with cultural institutions. These Wikipedians joined the course specifically as guides to give a human face to Wikipedia and to answer questions and cheer on participants as they begin to explore Wikipedia in the course.
