Welcome edit

Hi Liam, thank you so much for GLAM-Wiki: Finding Common Ground! I've created a new menu item called Events to make the page (and future events documentation pages) more accessible. --Frank Schulenburg 17:58, 27 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

GLAM/Projects & Events edit

Hi Liam, I just wanted to let you know that I've created the above page. It'll probably not be to your liking, but I think that it's current form may be a place to start from. Best regards, Rock drum 13:21, 11 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think that's a great start, thank you :-) Now, we need to fill it out! Probably good to come up with some way to sort things geographically (like you have set up currently) but also thematically (content donation, residency, conference...) and probably also sorted by type of organisation (G, L, A, M + botanic garden, broadcaster...) GLAM steering committee (or should it be group?) selection edit

Hi,

Getting the right small number of people (3 to a maximum of 6) in the steering committee may take a bit of negotiation and direct invitation as well as considering keen supporters who might put their own names forward. For credibility it might be handy to have a core of those that have been in-residence (as there are only two of you that might make sense) with additional figures who represent the GLAM sector (and may not be aware of this wiki or active Wikipedians and so may need to be specifically invited). Matthew C. immediately springs to mind as an active contributor but you may also wish to consider how international the committee should appear. If there are lots of names in the hat then you might also consider keeping to a low number in the steering group and nominate the others as suitable for as your stakeholder representatives and peer review group that may help out as much as the want but will not have the hassle and obligation of attending all steering group discussions. Cheers (talk) 08:41, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

replied on your talkpage.
Thanks, I'm on the cultural-partners list but this felt a bit more of a note for you rather than for wider views. I'll ponder signing up and it's probably a good idea for me to hang back and give more worthy folks (at least those with a wider personal network within the GLAM community than I have) to put their names at the top of the list. Part of pondering is that I have been discussing running for the WM-UK board in April and though such things would be complementary and possibly overlap, I would rather under-commit rather than fail to deliver.   (talk) 11:04, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I have put my name down after looking again at my involvement in GLAM/BM, GLAM/BL, GLAM/DER and new initiates of a BL hosted philatelic event and how to gear up a champion from inside English Heritage. I consider myself a complete amateur but by default others might be see me as becoming knowledgeable.
I have just watched your presentation [1] and was considering how to create an up to date flexible pack for a 30 minute (interactive) workshop introduction. It might touch on some of the same points to give background, but then I want to tick off some of the basic principles that might underpin following team workshop discussions (peer review and article quality, how to deal with vandalism or disruptive editors, acceptable sources, copyright! ...). One of the expectations for a British Library philatelic event would be that we would have a introductory session and discussion open to all and then the following workshop would be for the smaller number of people who were keen to try editing and potentially collaborating in a task force for long term improvement.
We probably have a significant body of slide-packs, documents and videos already and it was probably your intention that a role of the steering group could be to identify recommended best practice and start listing/linking a recent top ten (say) in the GLAM/Ambassadors & Interns page. It seems an easy early steering group deliverable. Once there are a number of alternative examples, it may not be necessary to create an artificial "boiler-plate" presentation pack as we should be able to trust any ambassador to have the good judgement to tailor materials to suit their audience. -- (talk) 09:02, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Register creation edit

Hi,

I'm wondering if it would be timely to just go ahead and create a register of GLAM Ambassadors in line with my thoughts at draft about how it can work. Everyone would start off as "awaiting verification" for someone with a legal identity (i.e. chapter board members) to confirm they are registered with the local chapter. The "level" for the Ambassador can be conservatively set by any member of the steering committee. Ambassadors can catch up with very briefly explaining their current scope of interest and Ambassador experience afterwards, though in the longer term this would be an upfront part of Ambassador volunteering (perhaps in line with the OTRS volunteer process).

I was fishing for email addresses for other names against the steering committee list in order to discuss the options but have yet to get posts back and we seem to be lagging the reality here. A better model might be bold, discuss and adapt rather than getting consensus first. -- (talk) 22:58, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Fae - can I say that the work you've done on this is fantastic! Thank you for putting in that effort! Consistent with my statement that I'm not the "boss" of GLAM, I would suggest that rather than asking for my permission, you seek the consensus (or at least the silent consent) of the cultural-partners mailinglist. For my part, I say go for it. Witty lama (talk) 03:29, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Cool, I'll send out a note a little later today. BTW, in terms of Ambassador verification, you are in a rather special position and it may well be the case that where a local chapter is not available to verify a GLAM Ambassador applicant, it may well come down to your rubber-stamp to show that this applicant is trustworthy as (I think) you probably are the only international "official" who might be able to help. As you say, one would need to take care that this is not interpreted as being the Über-ambassador as we want to see a collaborative community rather than a cliquey pseudo hierarchy or be hampered by expectations for your sign-off on every decision. -- (talk) 10:24, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

A register has been created at GLAM/Ambassador register. I left a note on the GLAM/discussion page but it was rather embedded after a long thread so some might miss it until we add it on the main GLAM area (I wanted to leave it as 'beta' for a couple of days first). Did you have any thoughts about how the Steering Committee would communicate? I asked Rock drum to think about an email list, but it might not be needed for a handful of members who one can email directly anyway. -- (talk) 21:16, 18 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Nice work :-) I'm thinking the steering committee concept still needs people from the WMF staff/committee responsible for the campus ambassadors to bring that experience. As for communication methods - I think a new mailing list is overkill, it's quite possible to merely "reply all" for these kinds of messages and to have most of the discussion and all of the recommendations on-wiki. Witty lama (talk) 04:43, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Cool.
I have approached WM-UK with regard to verifying GLAM Ambassadors in some way, this looks a bit of a bust in terms of re-using the financial records to confirm someone as a "real" registered person at the local chapter level.
Perhaps solutions to our verification needs should be part of the early discussion of the steering group? I suspect that a simple-minded "web of trust" would do us (as used for PGP signatures) - i.e. someone with a verified identity (initially you) could confidentially ratify the identity of another Ambassador and keep a record of what was checked (maybe by an email archived with the WMF). Preferably this would be a physical meeting to take a look at at least two suitable types of ID and if local chapters are prepared to help out, I see no reason why any chapter board member (who have to be legally registered anyway) could not also verify identities on request if they want to. I see verification as optional (certainly not a prerequisite for someone wanting to get on with outreach tasks) and only to the benefit of GLAM organizations who may be comforted by seeing that some checks have been done showing a certain degree of commitment by the people they are recommended to talk to. This Month in GLAM - February 2011 edit

Hi Liam, I've just finished compiling the February edition of This Month in GLAM. There are still a load of links that need converting into stories, namely in the Indianapolis update and News in brief. I'd also be much obliged if you could check over the editors' letter and the Derby report. Thanks in advance, Rock drum (talk · contribs) 12:07, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

That is awesome Rock Drum - truly very well done! I've made a slight addition to the "editors" page (notably to put your name first). I'm also going to leave a message to user:Trizek who is the new resident WPedian at the palace of Versailles to see if he wants to write something too. Finally - I'm thinking that it would be good if we could put this somehow in the english Wikimedia blog planet http://en.planet.wikimedia.org/ - that would require creating a blog and then getting this report linked to it. Do you want to get a free blogspot/wordpress address and republish there - i.e. the way the Signpost does it [2]? Witty lama (talk) 11:17, 28 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Tab header edit

Dear Witty lama,

I've noticed you worked on a tab header for the GLAM project page. I like it very much and would like to create a similar header for the WikiAfrica project I'm working on. Do you perhaps have some tips for me on how to create it? It can be very simple and plain. Riannedac (talk) 12:46, 6 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

An important message about renaming users edit

Dear Wittylama,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
