HerStory: Alice Springs bring local women to Wikipedia
The story of the contribution of women in the Northern Territory is still largely invisible on Wikipedia. On Sunday 15 April, Alice Springs locals got together to do something about it. As part of the 2018 NT Heritage Festival, the HerStory: Women on Wikipedia Edit-a-thon organised by Caddie Brain of Wikiclub NT drew ten people with little or no previous editing experience worked together to increase the stories and information about local women on Wikipedia. The workshop was supported by National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame who provided access to their Her Story database and archives, hosting the workshop in a courtyard steeped in history, on the grounds of the old Alice Springs Prison. The group created six new pages about pioneering women, including a legendary aviatrix who made a largely-forgotten record-breaking flight from Perth to Sydney in the 1930s to a missionary and nurse who worked to improve Aboriginal health outcomes in Central Australia for more than 40 years.

Three Australian Wikipedia editors presented a webinar to the Australasian Open Access Strategy Group on Tuesday 17 April about how Wikipedia and Open Access go hand in hand. Presentation audio and slides are available.

GLAM Peak Newcastle
On 9 - 10 April 2018 Whiteghost.ink represented Wikimedia Australia at the GLAM Peak Digital Access to Collections Workshop in Newcastle, New South Wales, where a group of 20 small GLAM organisations from regional New South Wales were working to understand the implications of digitisation for their organisations' practices and policies. It was one of many workshops delivered around the state designed to assist GLAM professionals who are responsible for implementing changes demanded by digitisation, but without the resources available to the big organisations. The workshop was a well-organised and relevant event for the GLAM staff attending. Everything from the technical aspects of digitising, to cultural sensitivities, preservation methods, and funding opportunities was on the agenda. Wikimedia Australia was invited as one of several "Technology Partners". As a member of the broader Wikimedia community with a relatively long-term engagement in global and Australian GLAM as well, Wikimedia Australia's experience is relevant to almost all aspects of this GLAM Peak training initiative, especially to working with volunteers, and of course, the mysteries of metadata and copyright.
