Record edition of Wiki Loves Monuments in Italy
Thanks to the participants in the competition and the volunteers of the collaborative projects, the 2023 edition was a record-breaking one: over 52,000 photos were uploaded for this edition, with 946 participants, the highest numbers worldwide. As every year, a pre-jury of volunteers and a jury of experts selected the best shots, 5 of which were selected in the religious buildings classification, another 5 in the Italian monuments classification.
The winners
Religious buildings
In 2023, more than 60,000 churches were photographed in Italy for the first time. Some of the best known and best loved by Italians and others are in the five winners. First place goes to Florence - Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, a photo that capturing the historic building with Brunelleschi's dome at sunset, followed by an interior view of the Baroque dome of the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna. Third place goes to Natura e Architettura, a shot in which the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà in Calascio, Abruzzo, is framed by the mountain panorama. Right at the back is the splendid view of the cloister of Monreale Cathedral, the masterpiece of Byzantine architecture in Palermo. Closing the category award-winners is the Basilica of San Francesco di Assisi during the blue hour, with a photo by Monica Rondini that plays on perspective.
Traditional contest
The first classified photo depicts the panorama of the town of Premana, a comunein the Province of Lecco in the Italian region Lombardy. Second place goes to The Orange Blue Moon which offers a glimpse of the skyline of Giovinazzo, a comune and former bishopric within the Metropolitan City of Bari in the southeastern Italy, followed by the photo of the Aragonese Tower of Guaceto di Carovigno, in the province of Brindisi. The pastel colours of Pavia's Covered Bridge captured by user Domeian, earn fourth place, while the Temple of Athena, Paestum takes fifth place with Diego Delso's photograph.
Special mention
Special mention to the shot Pino Loricato all'alba, which depicts a monumental tree in the Pollino National Park and wins the FIAF special prize.
