Share your Data course, history month, REBOOT! and Dutch Public Domain Day event
Course series 'Share your data' for employees of WWII museums and remembrance centers completed
In September and October, Wikimedia Netherlands, commissioned by the Network War Sources, organized a course titled 'Share Your Data' for employees of remembrance centers and war museums. The course aimed to teach participants how to work with Wikimedia.
During two sessions and a practical workshop, the 22 participants developed skills to prepare and upload their own data and/or images to suitable wiki projects. The sessions covered editing Wikimedia projects, releasing data and/or images, tools for uploading material to Wikimedia projects, copyright, and working with Open Data and Creative Commons licenses.
Participants were enthusiastic and motivated, and with the assistance of dedicated Wikimedia volunteers, they achieved significant results. In the context of this training, 6 articles were initiated on Wikipedia, 46 pages were edited, 24 references were added, 34 images were added to Wikimedia Commons, and 146 edits were made on Wikidata. Eureka! History month on Wikipedia and content donation Museum of World Cultures
In October, the annual History Month (Maand van de Geschiedenis) took place, also on Wikipedia. This time, the theme was 'Eureka,' with plenty of focus on science and discoveries. This resulted in a great outcome: 46 new articles were created, 7 articles were supplemented, and 7 items were edited on Wikidata. The Wikipedia articles ranged from the Magellanic Stream to Ibn al-Saffar and from Pieter Uijlenbroek to the Translators' School of Toledo. In addition, the National Museum of World Cultures made a content donation consisting of 45 photos of scientific research in the former Dutch East Indies. Save the date: Dutch Public Domain Day celebration in Hilversum, january 12
Monday, January 1st marks Public Domain Day, celebrating the expiration of copyright restrictions on many works created by individuals who passed away in 1953. As of January 1st, their work enters the public domain, making it available for a wide range of purposes.
This time, the collection includes works from various painters, illustrators, photographers, writers, and architects. On Wikidata, you can find an overview of creators whose work becomes available. Public Domain Day 2024 will be celebrated on Friday, January 12th, at Beeld & Geluid in Hilversum. Admission is free, and you can register here. REBOOT Edit-a-thon about Media artists
With the project 'Media Art on Wikipedia,' LIMA aims to increase online visibility for media art. LIMA, in collaboration with the Network Archives Design and Digital Culture (NADD) and the New Institute, organized a special edit-a-thon on Saturday, November 25th, at the New Institute. This writing marathon was part of the REBOOT exhibition featuring digital art. On the sixth floor of the New Institute, 12 participants, guided by experienced Wikipedians, worked on enhancing, improving, and creating articles about media artists. This resulted in over 200 edits on Wikipedia and Wikidata, as well as a new article about media artist Dries Depoorter. Participants also received a guided tour of the exhibition by curator Sanneke Huisman, and artists Ali Eslami and the artist duo Lancel-Maat shared insights into their work. Afterward, they also posed for photos for Wikimedia Commons.
