Italian Wikipedia takes libraries
By Sannita
Wikimedia Italia meets the National Central Library of Florence (2)
Folliowing the meetings in July 2013, the collaboration with the National Central Library of Florence (BNCF) went on during summer.
At the moment, the efforts are focused on the BNCF Thesaurus: the synchronization of links between Italian Wikipedia and the BNCF Thesaurus now counts 7,548 links in main space. The links were later uploaded on Wikidata, and are now recalled from there by Template:Thesaurus BNCF.
In the next months, will be implemented two more steps:
- granting a feedback towards BNCF, in order to correct several wrong connections between Thesaurus entries and Italian Wikipedia articles;
- extending the coverage of the Thesaurus entries (at the moment only 14,000 entries have a link to Wikipedia, on a total database of more than 40,000 entries).
WMI, BNCF and Italian library association (AIB) have also organised two meetings:
- a conference called Libraries and Wikipedia, open data and competences sharing on October 5, to be held at Biblioteca Marucelliana in Florence;
- a Biblio-hackathon on October 26, to be held at BNCF in Florence.
A partnership agreement for the following 3 years, to develop and support further projects, is also about to be signed betwen Wikimedia Italia and BNCF.
