Wikipedia at the Metropolitan New York Library Council in New York
Growing New York GLAM Activity
New York has been bustling with GLAM activity in the months of August and September.
On September 18th, Dorothy Howard, Wikipedian in Residence at the Metropolitan New York Library Council, hosted a workshop at METRO headquarters titled “Wikipedia for Libraries, Archives, and Museums,” with the help of several members of Wikimedia NYC. The workshop was attended by about 25 librarians, archivists, and museums professionals from institutions including the Frick Collection, New York Botanic Garden, New York Public Library, Queens Library, the Brooklyn Public Library, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Metropolitan Museum. The aim was to introduce the GLAM-Wiki program to New York librarians and archivists, do a basic training, and get institutional professionals thinking about Wikipedia projects.
The workshop was the third training Dorothy has organized for the Metropolitan New York Library Council so far. Dorothy’s Residency is consortium-based, and so her position is prominently focused on providing resources and trainings for librarians, archivists, and museum professionals to help them establish Wikipedia projects. She has held meetings with nine METRO member institutions to introduce GLAM-Wiki and Open-GLAM, and also helped organized “Wikipedia Takes Brooklyn", a Wiki Photo-Hunt and Edit-a-Thon at Brooklyn Public Library Central Library Info Commons in September.
On the agenda next are Edit-a-Thons at the New York Public Library Jefferson Market Library in Greenwich Village, and at Queens Library Central, as well as more staff trainings at New York libraries and at METRO, and a lecture on Wikipedia for the Rutgers University MLIS Program.

In brief
- Dominic McDevitt-Parks' new position working on GLAM-Wiki efforts full-time for the US National Archives was announced by David Ferriero on his AOTUS blog in mid-September. As the federal government was shut down and nearly all NARA employees furloughed about a week later, there will be a fuller report in next month's edition.
