Wiki Loves Art Belgium; Wiki Loves Monuments in Belgium & Luxembourg

On Friday 25 November 2016 we organised the award ceremony of the photo contests Wiki Loves Art Belgium 2016 and Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Belgium and Luxembourg. Both photo contests had as goal to make our cultural heritage in art and architecture more visible to the public and to enlarge the awareness for these subjects with enthusiasts and institutions. All images have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons to be used on Wikipedia and beyond.

The combined award ceremony took place at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in the Parc du Cinquantenaire in Brussels. This institution supports us in our mission since 2011!!

Wiki Loves Art

In November 2014 we started with the first preparations of Wiki Loves Art. We wanted to set up a project to reach out to cultural institutions and make it relatively easy for them to participate and get acquainted with Wikipedia and Wikimedia. This resulted in the participation of 13 cultural institutions in the period July-August 2016, with the organisation of 16 photography sessions, and with over 3000 photos uploaded in the contest.

Besides our partners (Packed, FARO, Open Knowledge Belgium, and Creative Commons Belgium - more info here) and the participating institutions that supported us, we got also support from Studio Baxton and the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage.

An independent jury choose the 12 best photos. The photographers who made these photos received a prize during the ceremony.

Wiki Loves Monuments

In September 2011 we organised for the first time Wiki Loves Monuments in Belgium and Luxembourg. In 2016 we organised for the fifth time the event to make the cultural heritage of Belgium and Luxembourg visible for the public. This resulted in over 3000 photos uploaded in the contest.

The project was sponsored by the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage, the Brussels Capital Region, Società Dante Alighieri Antwerpen, and the Catholic University of Leuven.

An independent jury choose the 9 best photos without looking who took them. The photographers who made these photos received a prize during the ceremony.
