Dear Koavf,

I'm sad that in 7 years no one has welcomed you to this wiki or posted a kind word on your talk page. Happily and humbly, I am proud to be the first. :) It's a privilege to acknowledge your 1.5+ million contributions to free knowledge. And it's a privilege to work with you here on Outreach wiki. Thank you, Koavf, for everything you do for the movement, for this project, and for our Outreach community.
Very sincerely yours, Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 21:42, 21 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Dear Koavf,

I just wanted to thank you for sharing this article on your English Wikipedia user page.

"You Don't Know It, But You're Working for Facebook. For Free." --The Washington Post

Marking for translation

edit

Hi, I looked everywhere, IRC included, but no one seems to know the answer. I would like to mark Education/Ideal workshop/pl for translation, but apparently the system automagically interprets all pages marked for translation as English, regardless of the actual language they are written in. Do you know if there is a chance to mark the language the page is in? Partial translation is already available at Education/Ideal workshop, but it would be easier to mark the Polish language page as the main blueprint, and copy the English paragraphs one by one. That way I would also have a reminder what parts of the translation are still missing. Halibutt (talk) 08:13, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Halibutt: I think the problem is that you are trying to translate from a subpage up higher in the hierarchy. Have you checked mw:Extension:Translate? It also has help pages and an IRC chat. If that's not helpful, please let me know and I will do some more digging myself. Koavf (talk) 15:04, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I tried the documentation (though it's really lengthy and I might have missed the solution there), I asked at IRC channels of mediawiki and at #mediawiki-i18n, to no avail. Also, moving the page one notch up the hierarchy doesn't do the trick either: Education/Warsztat idealny. Any help would be appreciated. Unless of course the developers did not think of such situation, which is also entirely possible... Halibutt (talk) 23:31, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm, it seems there is no way to solve this. Filed it as a bug (T145039). For now I'd have to simply translate the document by hand and treat the English version as if it was an original. Halibutt (talk) 23:49, 7 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Halibutt: Frustrating. Let me know if anything interesting happens on that bug. Koavf (talk) 01:02, 8 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
It seems the matter is somehow easy to fix, but we'd need additional code enabled for that, and there's no ETA as far as I can tell. Anyway, the fix consists of a way to select the default page language on a page by page basis. I'll keep you updated. Halibutt (talk) 08:58, 9 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
It works! Halibutt (talk) 22:00, 30 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Sorry to bother while you are busy doing heavy maintenance work. I have been keeping track of recent changes to see where I might be able to help this project, and nothing really came up. I have time to and interest in contributing to the maintenance of this project, so do you happen to know where I might be helpful? Thanks. --Joalpe (talk) 00:14, 15 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Joalpe: That's not a bother. You can always check Special:SpecialPages and go from the maintenance reports if you'd like. Koavf (talk) 01:16, 15 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Joalpe: I undeleted the page and then deleted the individual topic and then deleted the user page again. Koavf (talk) 02:04, 18 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
The topic is still in blue (and it is still readable) --will it remain like this? --Joalpe (talk) 03:38, 18 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Joalpe: Yes, unless an Oversighter uses the Suppression right. There are none local to this wiki, so you'd have to request suppression on Meta. Koavf (talk) 04:56, 18 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Help with a template

edit

Hi Koavf, I am hoping that you can take a look at Template:NavWiki/Navbar for me. The navbar has the appearance that I want on the template page, but when I view pages which are linked from the navbar and have the navbar on them, such as NavWiki/Additional Materials and NavWiki/Archives, the padding or margin effects for the selected page cause icons or text to move in the navbar. Do you know what might be causing this effect? I would like to cancel the effect. Thanks, ↠Pine () 21:39, 5 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Pine: Wow. Well, a few things are happening here: one is that you have a table with a lot of divs in it: these are elements that are liable to create a new block that will have some formatting or wrapping issues that (e.g.) span doesn't. I tried just swapping one for the other and that didn't do the trick. Still tinkering there. Another is that you have a lot of font, which is a deprecated tag that should really be replaced with CSS in spans. Let me tool around a little bit more so I can get the behavior that you're looking to have. (Somehow, it seems just fine on NavWiki/Additional Materials at the moment but has some wonky alignment on NavWiki/Archives and I have no clue how that is even possible.) Koavf (talk) 23:10, 5 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hm. So it looks like (see below) that when you have a link, there is only one p but in the examples where the page is already chosen, there are two ps. I'm not sure how to fix this: if you have two paragraphs, it's going to have some kind of effect on the page... Koavf (talk) 23:16, 5 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

I'm wondering if I've hit a bug in MediaWiki. Have a look at these diffs. The top padding shouldn't be having such a significant effect on the placement of the icon.

@Ottawahitech: You can post to any of my talk pages and I'll see it but I don't know what you're trying to tell me. Koavf (talk) 05:50, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for pinging me. It is good to know you closely watch all your talkpages, something I haven't figured out yet how to do efficiently. Just wondering if this a wiki-trick you may want to educate others about. As far as the Indiana organization, your page says that you are a hoosier, so I thought you may have heard about it? Ottawahitech (talk) 14:58, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Ottawahitech: I just have all my user preferences on all WMF wikis to email me when there are changes to my watchlist. Frustrating but it doesn't do this for minor edits, so I still manually check. I am a Hoosier but I just don't know what Covering Kids and Families of Indiana is. I took a look via DuckDuckGo, so thanks for the heads up. Koavf (talk) 19:00, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Deceased wikimedians

edit

Hi Koavf, Should the wmf have a coordinated approach about obituaries for users who contributed to the movement? I have been trying unsuccessfully to raise this issue before. With COVID claiming so many lives I have moved this up my priority list.

I am writing to yu because earlier today I was following some inks from your userpage and found the page of User:Cindamuse. I know that this user, whom I have had a brief communication with in my early days on enwiki, had passed away (I found this out years after she died). I also know that enwiki has a page for deceased wikipedians (w:Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians )) which I just checked and was shocked to see how many of the usernames on that page I recognize.

(BTW doesn't the existence of the page above contravene the w:Wikipedia:NOTSOCIALNETWORK ?)

It occurred to me that due to the COVID situation the wikimedia movement should have a policy that spans all wmf-wikis, all topics and all languages, so that pages such as w:Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians is also available to other wikimedians who may not be active on enwiki.

Before I spend too much time and effort developing this thought on this wiki which may/may not be destined to the dustbin (looks like my contributions to this discussion of a coupe of day ago have already gone to the dusbin?) (updated by Ottawahitech (talk) 14:13, 23 December 2021 (UTC))) I better check that:Reply

  • You are still active here?
  • This topic is not taboo on this wiki

Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 16:04, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Ottawahitech: I am active and I don't think it's taboo or otherwise inappropriate to ask the question. I do think that it's better asked at m:, since that is a meta-question. I'm in favor of some kind of unified policy for locking accounts or having a standardized banner for user account pages because that would aid in collaboration (as does the page on deceased Wikipedians), but I'm not sure that a common policy on writing obituaries is really needed. Koavf (talk) 17:50, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
re: I do think that it's better asked at m: Well I guess that rules out my participation since, as you know, I am blocked on Meta. Cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 14:01, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
