Outreach Oceania Resource Development
editIf you have the time, could you possibly help with the developing of some resources for Outreach Oceania? I'd like to basically develop a teacher guide for using Wikipedia in the classroom, create a student guide for using Wikipedia, Commons and Wikinews. I'd want to try to do them some what topically and generally: 1. English and Communications, 2. Business, Tourism and Marketing, 3. Science and Technology, 4. General Liberal Arts. I don't know if I should kind of focus on the idea of creating say a binder for each guide, where print materials can easily be put in or a general one part booklet. I see some bits and pieces on Wikimedia Outreach, but I'm not 100% certain they will all work quite right considering the objective is more about integrating Wikipedia into a classroom setting and showing the value for students. I don't want to make it so much about just learning the basics and at most, we'll probably have one to two periods in a classroom. Not much time. :( --LauraHale (talk) 00:15, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Laura, I am very happy to see that project coming together for you, but I'm not likely to be able to help much. I could probably do a bit of proofreading and editing once you have it mostly assembled, but that will depend on how busy I am when that comes together. But definitely feel free to ask, and I'll do my best! Also, if you haven't run across it, you might be interested in Andrea Forte's research on wikis in the high school classroom -- I believe you'll find a link from during Wikisym in my tweetstream @wikistrategies. - Do you have a link for it? I'm basically on dialup speed until my bandwidth resets and having problems finding it. I've poked around at Outreach and on Wikipedia. I feel like the materials I want either aren't where I can easily find or aren't quite right. A lot of what I'm finding are examples of what people have already done, or what people are doing. There doesn't appear to be a coupling of why and how. (I'm looking for similar materials for GLAMs, with a focus on the reality they aren't likely to have people showing up in their backyards to be a Wikipedian in Residence, or run workshops... but that the GLAM project is still a valuable tool that they could use.) I'm mostly looking for resources that I can easily use for print: The plan is to engage in an area that gets some support from groups like One Laptop Per Child, and where internet is reliable but not always accessible to everyone. And yeah, babbling. Bookshop breakdown:
- File:Welcome2WP English 082310.pdf has useful elements, but not really helpful for curriculum.
- File:Welcome2WP English Flap 081810.pdf is one page that is useful as an insert.
- File:Ten Simple Rules for Editing Wikipedia.pdf is another nice guide for beginners, but not much for curriculum development and how students should use.
- File:Evaluating Wikipedia article quality 2010-11-26 (web).pdf is handy for understanding how to evaluate Wikipedia, but doesn't necessarily translate as an instructional guide for wider evaluation of sources that could easily be integrated into the curriculum.
- File:PlagiarismHandout.pdf is another great handout, which could have bits re-used or presented as stand alone with in a binder but needs context.
- Wikipedia as a Teaching Tool: Learning Objectives and Assignments Types is a lot closer to what I'm looking for and could be adapted.
- And I think I know what I'm looking for but not entirely certain. I'm looking for something that makes it really clear how Wikipedia/Wikinews could seamlessly be integrated into a curriculum with the whys answered. Student materials that complement instructor materials, with a greater emphasis on curriculum objectives for subject matter. (Given my super picky nature, I'll probably end up creating something on my own, and this comment will probably just end up mostly stream of conscious planning for that.) A lot of these resources are really, really fantastic... and the video part, I will probably happily put on a DVD or two. Just yeah. Creating New OUTREACH
editDear Pete, That was really nice to see you here and leading outreach however I can not find this place much crowded however it should be more the place where most of people should be coming and knowing about Wikipedia or Wikimedia, I have seen the admin rights are giving to everyone on this project, its like give away is going on here, I certainly can understand its a new project, but you need a proper team to work, this project as best as Wikipedia or any other project or Wikimedia, as I am part of team, now I want to take the leadership under your flag, I want you to set up an appointment with me on Skype so we can certainly talk on it and make it better place, What do you think??

Spambots
editI've talked with the stewards, and they suggest not blocking before a CU is done if the editors haven't edited or set off the abuse filter. Some of the stewards will do a CU on suspicious account creations like that, but some are more cautious. --Rschen7754 22:17, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for the feedback, I was wondering what was the best thing to do. What you say makes sense, but collections of "sleeper" accounts do worry me a bit.
- I'm curious, though -- you blocked several similar accounts right after me. Were you able to see something that I missed, so that you were more confident they were connected to a past CU, or something like that? -Pete (talk) 23:13, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
- I talked with the stewards after blocking, and they confirmed that they were spambots and locked the accounts. I started removing talk page access and email, but then realized that it was useless since the stewards locked the accounts. --Rschen7754 23:34, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

- Do we have Checkusers on this site, or do we have to go outside for help. I've been pre-emptively blocking them as they are created, but I wouldn't mind some clarification if we're getting false positives. - @Nemo bis:, According to @Ijon: on a Facebook page,
- Shani Evenstein Sigalov has run into a problem with Magnus's Treeviews tool, where it produced zero pageviews for all pages, despite there definitely being pageviews (verified through the "Pageview API demo").
- Until Magnus fixes it, I wrote a quick Ruby script that accepts a PagePile ID and produces a CSV file with monthly pageviews. Enjoy!
